We were so inspired by the tone deafness of the ISU Awards being held the same week that they took a sledgehammer to clean sport by denying Team Canada a bronze medal at the 2022 Olympic Games that we decided to issue our own awards to skaters off the top of our heads. Polina Edmunds, Gracie Gold, Ilia Malinin, Deanna Stellato, Ashley Wagner, Guillaume Cizeron, Eteri Tutberidze and others have given so much to the sport and want to award them on a very special edition of 'This and That'.

I wouldn’t have been so hooked on figure skating without watching 1995 US Nationals. I was mesmerized by Nicole Bobek and Michelle Kwan looking pensive and wondering why she isn’t number one in the world and watching Carol Heiss dress like Kate Hepburn in the kiss and cry with Tonia. And to watch someone so extraordinary like Rudy Galindo, it was beautiful to be apart of an amazing artistic sport!

Thank you for the "freakishly thin" observation. Anyone who mentions thin-ness these days is generally accused of "body shaming", but in reality most folks in the skating community don't want it discussed, mentioned, noticed, analyzed. Anyone who dares say anything referencing unhealthy-looking bodies, is banned or warned for "body shaming". That's a cover up by the skating community, and in no way protects children. Actually, it does the exact opposite: we have been pressed for years not to speak about Eteri's (and others') skeletal students, with obviously unhealthy bodies, as though it was detrimental to young people to care about them and call out that what they are experiencing as wrong and exploitive.

I’ve been a skating fan since very young age, saw Peggy Fleming in the 1968 Olympics and then kept watching. Loved Dick Buttons. So I’m not a youngster and like TLS I am very critical of today’s skating personnel. I can’t even begin to talk about the Russians. I’m not too keen on the kids, when a young lady who has a mature body and presence on the ice that beats the skinny legged Russian kid doing 10 triples.

I know we are all really focused on the doping... but are we just going to ignore the other elephant in the room which was her scores? The Olympic channel just reminded me of Yuna in 2014 and how everyone was behind her by comparing techniques and jumps to Sotnikova... fast forward to 2022 watching the team event... every toe jump for Kamila was pre-rotated on the ice with a full blade take-off and still giving her 105 points in technicals... meanwhile Kaori would get a yellow just to review her edge change on a lutz... What has changed for clean skating from 2014 till now?
@Rachel-rs7jn
@Rachel-rs7jn 3 ай бұрын
Yes, that is the enormous issue that I'm worried will not get addressed if/when the Russians come back. It wasn't just the doping but the insane judging that propped them up.
@specialj67
@specialj67 3 ай бұрын
On the one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, selective enforcement of certain rules and biased judging have always been (and will always be) part of the sport. It’s what happens when you have humans judging other humans. Of course, there is always something that could be done to reduce the impacts of biased judging and rule enforcement, so there should always be efforts taken to reduce it where possible. But also, we should just be realistic that there is no one way or combination of ways to fully eliminate these kinds of issues.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but what could Raf do for Amber? It seems to me that her jumps are strong. They're fast and fully rotated. This is just my opinion, but because she can't seem to skate two clean programs in a competition, and sometimes just completely falls apart if she makes a mistake, she needs some other kind of help. And to my knowledge, which comes from Mariah Bell and Adam and Ashley Wagner, that's not really Raf's forte. I'm not all-knowing, and if I'm wrong, I would love it if someone could straighten me out.

Publicity. Politics. Forcing her to actually do her program every day. Her long program efforts indicate that she doesn't train the long with the triple axel as consistently as she should - and multiple sources from the world arena confirm this. The media loves Rafael. He is a personality like the Karolyis. Even getting a quote from Rafael will elevate her to the next level. Judges just seeing him at the boards will elevate her scores. Imagine the judges Rafael could even put in a good word with at the hotel bar or while getting coffee. Or washing his hands in the bathroom. That carries much more weight and respect than Damon Allen and Tammy. It is time to start thinking bigger than domestic BS politics. That is how figure skating works.@@trylogic4084

Loved hearing about the empty arenas for Starson Ice. I'm old enough to remember seeing The Ice Capades at Madison Square Garden (not even the current one, but the previous one) and it was a full house. In my interpretation of the rules, the points should have been awarded irrespective of whether the event was a team or an individual event. Figure skating's team event differs significantly from other sports. The marks (TES/PCS) are insignificant, and the skaters' rank among other competitors is the most important factor. Therefore, in the event of a disqualification, the affected skater's rank is removed, and the other skaters move up by one rank. To say I am disappointed with the ISU's statement is an understatement.

I agree with what Jonathon was saying about there not being people to tune it for, there used to be something for everyone, to captivate and how would younger you have found the sport - its probably through social media rather than traditional media which means I hate to say it but chances are its Russian skaters people will see - those had have fans accounts, idk how or why but that young Russian ice dance team went viral on TikTok and were everywhere, pre and post them splitting. At one point if you looked up ice dance on there, it was either all them or all tessa and scott. You just need that one person or performance to stick with you to draw you in - whether skating, gymnastics or whatever - everyone remembers what made them go from ~oh, cool ill watch this, to activately following the sport and seeking it out.

I have a theory that the team doctors are using radiofrequency ablation (which's done in Pain Management -- a subspecialty of Anesthesiology) to disable the pain/sensory nerves in injured areas, so that the girls can continue training on them through the Olympic cycle... So by the end of their careers, at Age 17, their joints are damaged beyond repair

@@JackAShepherd I don't know, there is a lot of nerve damage that comes with that and losing a lot of your sensation would be hard to train on in general. it might get you through a competition but you might not make it through a season because of the discomfort and numbness.

They have some AMAZING talent and INCREDIBLE coaching in Russia!" I would comment "Yeah, sure, I am so sure no doping is involved." People thought I was very cynical...

I need inspiring and fun skaters to be in the intro. This season, we have Deanna and Ilia. I usually put about six skaters in the intro. That's two. And that likely encapsulates the problem skating has right now. Isabeau and Amber are not quite interesting enough for the type of personality I would put in the intro.

Your comments about stars on ice USA are interesting. I went to SOI in Montreal last year and the arena was quite full with a lot of families but most people were cheering for older favourites like Elvis Stojko. But comparing that to this year's Canadian Nationals feels very weird. Seems like there's no fans for current or upcoming skaters. Hopefully worlds will have a good crowd :/

Skating is in a sad state. When you have so few venues to recoup your costs after spending so much time, stress and money and having little public interest (such as Stars on Ice), the only reason that you skate is for yourself, but limit the costs. The tickets for Stars on Ice are not cheap at $50 a pop. That may also be why people aren't coming.

Because men's jumps get stronger as they hit puberty and grow up, so the most competitive men are adults and there are plenty of them. The MO with the girls is to get them to do jumps that grown-up women have a harder time with due to body shape, in that small window before puberty. So there's less competition overall: once they hit a certain age they're done so the best don't accumulate at the top.

For instance, about the greatest free skate ever by any male skaters, Hope and Legacy from Worlds 2017 he simply said it was elevator music and didn't say anything nice. I have no clue why he criticises him as a person, he is basically the most unproblematic skaters out there who only has good things to say about anyone around him.
