This week, a blood bath went down at the 2022 Russian Figure Skating Championships. Eteri Tutberidze came to dominate the event, yet the crowd booed the scoring of Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin and was on the side of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. While Kamila Valieva, Alexandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova may be the Olympic Team, was it too much for the public to stomach? Tamara Moskvina's teams of Mishina and Galliamov and Boikova and Kozlovskii defeated Tarasova and Morozov and raised new questions about Russia's strategic in the team event at the 2022 Olympic Games. What about Mikhail Kolyada and Mark Kondratiuk? And is Adelia Petrosyan the future of Team Tutberidze? Why was Sofia Muravieva's score lowered? We break it all down and more of the latest edition of 'This and That.

Although I respect everyones views on Liza I think the real travesty is that Anna took 3rd place away from Adelia or Sofya S. (Particularly Samodelkina). Crazy that a girl who had two clean skates with a triple axel and 3 quads is beaten by someone who fell on one quad and just managed to land her triples. I mean I get she's a junior but credit needs to be given....

Even with that carrots Samo still above Anna's BV. But with junior there's no way Rusfed will give her more than the WC and 3x Rusnats. It's unfair but some can still be reasoned regardless of the quality given on ice. I'm actually more angry over Muravieva scoring less than Anna

Honestly, I love how Ted doesn't make a sound during the performance. Like when you're watching a movie, you don't want anyone explaining anything, you want to immerse yourself and that's it, you don't want anyone's input in your experience. He does it after, during the reviews which is how it should be.

The taping on Anna’s knee looked heavy, gnarly and painful. Pretty evident to me that she was injured. I’ve heard rumours from friends in St. Petersburg that she was injured during the second day of practice here, and was jumping 3 quads in run throughs until the injury, which explains the “I’m in good shape” comments and then the “I will not comment on how many quads” and “it depends on the form” comments. I just hope she wasn’t in too much pain skating, although it certainly looked otherwise. Kamila - unstoppable in practice and competition. Sasha - apparently there or there abouts the whole time, as usual, although she managed to deliver in the free. Liza - I’m so heartbroken for her😭😭😭

@SuperLara007

She has had those tapes on her knees many times already, it's a result of her pre-jump technique, punching the full blade down with full force in a pre-rotation position, it puts all the pressure on her knees; unless she changes her technique she'll keep having to put these tapes mid-season every year. I don't know about this time but they don't necessarily mean an actual injury, they're just to relieve tension and pressure on muscles and joints; right before worlds, she competed with both knees like this and landed two quads, so there's definitely something off this time, and as they usually do, they don't disclose injuries unless they really have to. Like during nationals she was breathing salt and everybody was wondering why, also after withdrawing from a grand prix, they said it was pneumonia but this week Eteri let slip that Anna had covid complications... something nobody knew she even had...

Anna had a bad SP1 and changed last minute to SP2 which was good but not great. Injuries this season not allowing full training, and no she did not recycle programs otherwise id say re do Perfume and keep Forgiveness, TT did not set up an Olympic package thats the real issue. We know Anna fights but all these not on her favor was expected to not win. Lets hope she recovers to make up in Euros and Olympics. Proud for Sascha, as expected over rated Kamila (love her axel though), but also shows the crappy system we have in skating where nothing is judged technically as textbook but biased.

My highlight was actually Sofia Samodelkina. And Sasha. Trusova has this stubborn maximalist energy when it comes to the athletic part of skating. Adrenalin rush that you do not get from other skaters, which is why people myself included root for her with the flaws in choreo, artistry and inconsistencies. To me, this makes it what it is, a sport. It may be non-perfect but is guaranteed to be exciting and not boring. She is also does not have this “good girl”cheesiness or diva syndrome that many Tut girls have, and seems to have 0 interest in media attention overall.
@amethyst5512
@amethyst5512 2 жыл бұрын
I also but can’t help but rooting for Trusova despite her lack of actual skating ability and artistry. She just has this energy about her. She’s going to do the maximum she can athletically no matter what anyone says. She definitely seems to be an independent thinker and has personality. She never seems to be overly upset when she falls. She just goes harder next time. She actually really needed a coach to tell her when enough is enough because this injury may have been avoided. She’s under rotating now, which may improve or not, but I still can’t help but root for her. She’s the opposite of Anna, who at this point just comes across as a pathetic little good girl not understanding that what has happened to her was inevitable and she’s about to be tossed aside like yesterday’s trash. It’s very hard to watch.

Samodelkina is by far the most interesting and with the highest potential of the current juniors (the only one who doesn’t skate like a little kid) - but the version of Habanera is a travesty... it’s like a lounge version of some gimmick starbucks cd trend from 20 years ago, by the time the music changes, the boring backbeat has been going on for some three minutes that feel like thirty; can’t imagine how depressing that program must be if she’d skate it with even one mistake

@ Liliya Ugai: perhaps it is time for Davidov/TSKA to say something, stand up to Rus Fed, fight for their skaters and demand equality. Instead they only praise Eteri and take the slaps, happy to offer the other cheek. What do they wait for? Plushenko and Yana to do all the work? TSL to call it out? You can't be a coward and expect to be taken seriously. Even Medvedeva and Tarasova occasionally have the balls to stand to Eteri. Why can't TSKA?

I’m not sure what’s going on with Anna but she demonstrated some of the worst skating skills I’ve ever seen on the senior circuit during that free skate. She was fighting as hard as she could to generate any speed whatsoever. I usually don’t care about skating skills unless I’m watching two skaters side by side, but it really detracted from the programs and even made me worry that she wouldn’t get enough speed to get any of her jumps around.

Gentlemen, I truly appreciate the job you are doing and totally understand the concept of the show. At the end of the day it is extra penny and dime for the figure skating promotion around the world anyways. Could you let me drop a thought over here so someone might catch an idea and spread a word. I am Russian, from Chelyabinsk, big, cold and very provincial, industrial city in the mountains. The woman figure skating in the place is huge! And this is truly sad to see all these talents going literally nowhere! The quantity of the great skaters in the country is enormous huge. By the quality Russian Nationals is not just bigger than the Olympics, it is simply another planet. My heart is falling apart of watching all those young girls fighting for the 3 spots only! God damn 3... and all thar hysterical trash around this fight. If we send 10 ladies in Beijing there is a very possible chance that 6-8 of them will be in top 10. And this is the only top of the iceberg. There are 100s of extremely good kids around the country, they just never got lucky to be caught by the famous trainer, who are concentrated in Moscow and St.Pete only. We need a league here, I would say open league. With all the foreigners willing to reach invited. For the grace of this sport, the old farts who run Russian figure skating federation at the moment - they can't do shit! And all those hidden stars will never have a chance to even try, because there is not such a place for it. All the competitions in and out of Russia are a simple joke, based on what kinda golden mine we are sitting on here. Please, drop an idea in your show somehow. We are fighting with the windmills here... and the girls are suffering for nothing. Russia has so much to offer to this world in figure skating... if you would now. Thanks again to both of you gents. For the enthusiasm and your dedication.

If I was part of the Team event selection team, I would have: Ladies - Valieva, Trusova They have the tech to blow away each segment. Valieva for SP and Trusova for LP. Trusova just needs to land 1 or 2 quads to maintain their 1st place. Don't do anything more. Men's - Mark I don't trust Kolyada so I'm putting Mark on the spot. He just needs to skate clean and be shenanigans-free. I'm gonna assume his placement would be between 3rd-4th. It's an expected loss. Pairs- M/G They are consistent and they provide a good 1st/2nd place buffer to support the ladies' lead. Ice Dance - SinKats and StepBuk Why the shit would you want D/S on any segment when they could basically sink the team to silver? Anything could happen in the team event. What a noticed with Diana Davis, her partner is a good dancer and their coach taught them well how to disguise Dianas flaws. Almost everything they do is intended to disguise her flaws as something cool. For example, Gleb drags her around, the lifts they do have more about with Gleb's abilities and she let just him throw her in the air (like a corps), but he is doing a lot of work. Yeah a lot of people in Russia are really mad at Anna's scoring. We are not blind. It's just that we feel we can't do anything about it because the federation doesn't care. I almost feel unpatriotic but I hope there will be an upset at the Olympics and we won't get the whole podium. I feel Kami deserves gold if she is clean or almost clean but hopefully at least the bronze goes somewhere else. It's like they think the viewers are blind or something. They roll out this "competition" for us and then think we won't notice that they have predetermined the results beforehand. At least before we felt an element of uncertainty and competition there. This was just a huge F you to the Russian public. The too close to the sun reference was good. I think we all felt something was off here at these nationals.

Both ways of getting skaters to the OG are controversial but maybe they didn’t want the extra work/time that it would have taken to look at all the bodies of work over the past season?

Listen to him before D/S skate their RD and after Jonathan and Tiffany skate. „You may think you’re seeing things, but you’re not the experts, they see things you don’t“, „you might not always agree with the scores, but you’re not the experts“. It was very obvious he was told what to say and when. He was also downplaying muravieva in the LP, much more than in the SP. Her free skate was phenomenal. The out right cheating was so predictable. I missed Kostornaia. We didn't see any face stickers, a jacket thrown at Eteri or a water bottle thrown in Dani G's direction. The ice dancing was criminal. I felt for Zagorski/Guerreiro as their score were being booed. As a long-time Liza's fan (and glad this channel changed their attitude to her thanks to Jonathan's SC attendance), I did not feel that she lost this competition unfairly. I still cannot understand why she came to this, most important for her dream, competition without 3-3, which she was doing both in her SP and LP at Rostelecom. Of course, in fair judging, Shcherbakova (with at least 2 or 3 URs unmarked, and objectively, very weak this time PCS-wise in free) should have been somewhere behind Muravieva and maybe even behind Khromych, but she is a WC, and actually received not too-much-lower scores with similar competition at the Worlds. Liza knew that without quads this season she had to give it all, so why, why 3-2? She lost 12-14 points in SP on 3A and the combination, and still got 71, which was plenty for that skate. She would have been second after SP if did it clean, and then, even without 3-3 in LP, would have gotten higher PCS performing after Anna, and then I believe she would have scored above Anna overall. She just needed to repeat ANY of her previous performances of both programs she did so well this season. I am sure it is very difficult to maintain the top shape for so long when you are not 15. It was such a pity and shame that GPF was cancelled for Liza who tried so hard to make it despite Eteri clearly intentionally assigned Valieva to her for both GP events. It turned out that Trusova in some way had a benefit of the injury, because she had time to rest and relaunch. Anna started her season later, but she knew after SP she could repeat her WC performance here and still be ahead of Liza, so she was not trying hard. She is clever. It does not seem Mishin is as good of a strategist as Tutberidze in terms of knowing when to get someone in top shape or when an athlete can relax. It seems like his athletes start seasons a bit too early and peak in October/November and then, reasonably, are exhausted and on the recess by the time of RN. One can see how it worked 10-20 years ago, when Nats were so much easier, and Euros were so prestigious. Eteri's athletes tend to be most vulnerable at Euros - at least in all seasons before except for 2018; and that would be a good strategy now too because I doubt any of them, with the inflation they always get, could possibly lose it to clean Loena. And I highly doubt that after the sweep at Europeans, no matter the actual performances, federation would do anything to change this selection for Olympic games. Of course the ice is slippery, the injuries are so frequent in this sport, but they are also smart and Eteri now having only three, not six, women will be very cautious. In any case, I would actually be interested to see what would happen if Tuktamysheva moves to Tutberidze... whether she could actually pull out the quads at competitions then and what kind of scores would she be getting? There is not much too lose for her after this season, and it would be another "challenge" Tutberidze could be interested in.

For everyone who called her FS tacky and questioned her choice - the crowd reception was exactly why she went for it. They love her and fully responded. Loved the portrait! Hope the Empress starts throwing down some quads next season, she'll have nothing to lose!

Come on. Really? I mean this isn’t the first time I hear this so maybe it’s me who doesn’t get it. With ice dance as competitive as it is this year, they’re going to put that girl who can’t hold an edge for more than a second and just .. literally humiliate themselves globally like that? And you guys think that they can get gold! I don’t know I have eyes and I I can’t not see what I’m seeing: there’s no way they can win anything like that! I just thought that RusFed Wanted to send them for experience. Putting them in the team event would be asking for Public embarrassment. No? Maybe I’m the only one..🤷🏻‍♀️

They ALL deserved it for equal, they all are talented and work like crazy. Is no one’s fault there’s just 3 spots.

Who would you take the spot away from, though? Kamila is otherworldly. Sasha is the one who started the quad revolution, and deserves some respect for that. Anna is the reigning World Champion and three-time Russian champion who can still throw down a solid program when the deck is stacked against her. I do believe Anna's time is running out quickly, though, and she is vulnerable. I can see Wakaba unseating her for the bronze medal at Olympics, if she hits her triple axels.

@@christinethorp3684 Liza could go if one of the girls is injured. I think it was kind of a tough choice between Liza, Sasha, Anna, (and even Aliona; to a lesser extent Maya. Kind of a given that Kamila would go. RusFed clearly was on Anna’s side but as you note her condition is not ideal and clean Wakaba could beat her if fairly scored. Liza may be a stronger choice IMO at present than Anna. Sasha, I don’t think she will be going because she brought in the ladies quad revolution etc but because she actually brought the quads when needed, at the right time ( the nationals). She can be chaotic and they don’t like that.

Don't you guys think the scheduling/timing for 4CC and Eureapon is unfair? The European countries are mostly going to send their potential Olympic teams there to battle it out and also to gain points for world standings. While, 4CC countries can't because it is too close to the olys.

Gentlemen, you are a perfect commentating team. Wonder what you'd be like "live" in these events? When Dave is in deep analysis of the political storylines and poking below the surface like Rigoletto, it would be useful to have thought bubbles for Jonathan. Love to know what he's really thinking but won't say. Clearly, he's the best partner for Dave because he lets your riffs go unchallenged until their logical conclusion. Jonathan gives Dave so much room to lay it down. I bet Jonathan would be the best boyfriend. Just saying.

She used this strategy in the past, when she didn't get elected to world (Zhenya went there). She posted 3A back to back or something. But someone still needs to tell her to do it strategically ; )
