It depends on who your friends are, I guess … but: Jonathan's suggestion that Nathan's performances would not be the kind you would show to a non-skating fan would only make sense if this person also had no interest in sports. Nathan Chen is precisely the person who would most interest non-skating fans in the sport of figure skating (emphasis on "sport"). I was rather impressed myself not only by his athleticism but also by his two new programs (which I prefer to the ones he skated last year).

I think from a more general perspective, it's true though. Just considering, for instance, the Olympics: figure skating rakes in more views (and thus more money) than any other winter sport by a _massive_ margin, and most viewers can't tell a lutz from a loop, let alone a triple from a quad. So I mean, yeah if you were able to explain how insanely difficult a quad is to an outsider, they might be able to appreciate the difficulty in the same way you can appreciate the difficulty in ski jumping or snowboarding, but by and large, the difficulty is not the main draw and not what gives figure skating its quadrennial surge in popularity every olympic cycle. Just by looking at the numbers, if you were trying to generate interest from a non-skating fan, Brown would be the safer bet. That's just generally speaking, though. I get what you're saying about people who already follow sports, especially if it were something technical like snowboarding or freestyle skiing.

Iris I also think Nathan would’ve blown up if he hadn’t have melted down in the sp and garnered a medal at least. It’s the two bad skates that scarred his reputation in the general public. The fact that he’s still one of the first prominent Asian-American Olympic male athletes would have been a narrative that could’ve been used to carry out his reputation too.

1:29:28 Starts the discussion about the Nebelhorn Trophy. Jenni Saarinen and Gabriele Frangipani were my favourites at this event. Jenni is yet another finnish lady with huge jumps, stunning presence and amazing skating skills, very underrated, she moved to Kostner's coach this season. Gabriele added the quad toe this season, moved the 3a in the second half, i've to say beating Rizzo was a bit of a statement for him, the fight for the Olympics spots there will be interesting to watch.

My other issue with Mariah's FS is that she skated the whole thing like she wished lyrical music was on. Literally no change in speed or style with each song, like they tried too hard not to go over the top and fell flat.
@AT-jm4dl
@AT-jm4dl 3 жыл бұрын
I think one problem is that Mariah has a long gliding set up into some of her triples like the lutz and flip, and no choreography can be done during that period. That works fine when skating to slow music but during the fast sections, there needs to be some sort of choreography going on constantly. I bet if Bell skated the entire 4 minutes to TWTIA then the program would look and feel better.

I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't comment much about the Nebelhorn Trophy. After all it was the first International figure skating event of the season (ISU sponsored). It was only Deniss's shirt, sleeveless or not, meagre mention to his first quad, vague reference to Gabriele Frangipani's program, the rookie commentator. Ladies - zero mention, didn't exist. And Eva Lotte Kiibus (the winner) is a rising star. Dance, Pairs, didn't happen. So if figure skating is dead in Europe (to which strangely Moscow and St Petersburg belong…), you're not helping to ressuscitate it. Nathan's programs may have many quads, but Deniss's programs were far more fascinating. That said, I usually enjoy your This and That. From Portugal, in Europe.

Knowing their view of Nathan in the past I hesitated initially for a second but clicked regardless - hoping that the pandemic might have not only changed the world but also this channel...Of course, sigh, most people don’t change...I like both Nathan’s programs this season. So beautifully skated. Nathan’s music and artistry has the level of depth that few skaters can reach. For example, for his FS program, if you truly understand Philip Glass’s music, you will then really understand, appreciate and watch in owe of Nathan’s interpretation and performance.

I have seen him skate twice. He steps on the ice with real authority. Power without struggle. Grace without gilding the lily. Drama without melodrama. . His form is so clean and simple it is just enchanting. He is ergonomically playing with physics like like Isaac Newton. Some people call it boring , too technical; not engaging. I call it exquisite. He gets better and better every season. Some people don't get it and I just don't know why.

I gotta admit, even knowing that you accidentally got the choreographers mixed up for Mariah, it's hilarious how you're all drilling poor Adam and the weird ABBA transitions (plus the "you should do programs for an intermediate skater" comment) when this was done by Shae Lynn Bourne 😂😂 It really puts things into perspective for SLB and I hope she listens to the constructive criticism and adjusts Mariah's musical transitions. Also, Nathan's programs looked way better choreographed and more cohesive. Which makes me wonder why is SLB giving something so unfinished to Mariah. Now that she has a Kostornaia program in the making I hope that we won't see an obvious program quality contrast between both skaters. I would hate to presume that SLB has her favorites... As for Adam, he deserves an apology 😅

Also just stick with Adam as her choreographer, he's done her best programs the last few years. Hoping we'll see a triple axel attempt (even if its just a video of her doing one in practice) by the end of the season. Nathans programs are breathtaking. First he praised Paganini who was truly awful during her FS and only scored 105.25 (20 points less than Bradie Tennell) and then he had a non-response to Vasiljev's FS performance where he landed a quad and two 3A and looked physically better than ever.

I love ABBA, and Mariah can really bring it to life, but the music edit really needs a lot of work. Personally, I think its missing Waterloo. Whenever I think of ABBA, my first thought is always Waterloo. Forget Dancing Queen, Open with Mama Mia, then Winner Takes all, then either finish with Thank You for the Music, Dancing Queen or Waterloo. but there's not enough time to work 4 pieces into it, 3 would work. I'm sure with the right costuming, and once the "tits and teeth" have been put onto the programme, it'll be fabulous.

I mostly agree with your suggested songs. There are too many snippets...I'd start with Winner Takes It All...make it moody and graceful...move into Dancing Queen with the transition right at the start of the chorus, and then finish BIG! with Waterloo...1min 20 sec of each song...use recognizable choreography.
@hellsbellsmichelle
@hellsbellsmichelle 3 жыл бұрын
@@troyroepke6071 I get why you think that's the right order. But in a 4 minute programme, a skater has to breathe. And it's the editor's job, to create that space. It needs to start with something upbeat, but not to fast. Quick enough and recognisable enough for the audience to get on board and clap to, and for me, Waterloo has to be the ending. It has to be the thing that the audience and judges are still hearing in their ears as they're going through the technical reviews. If it were me, I'd go Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight) to open, then Winner takes it all, then Waterloo. Waterloo is editable perfectly at 1m36s without breaking any lyrics and annoying the audience trying to sing along. Therefore, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Winner needs to be 2m 24s spread over both. You wouldn't need a lot of Gimme Gimme Gimme, it's more to set the scene, and get the audience and judges on board. If I were editing, I'd start Gimme Gimme Gimme, Winner, Waterloo.

I think Brandon needs to throw my queen Alexa with a little more arc. But the throw triple loop they landed was huge and I love this pair already. With skaters scrambling for normal ice time this summer, it’s amazing Knierim & Frazier already look this comfortable together. Their twist has a great foundation and is coming along nicely. It had more amplitude in the LP, so I think they just need legit time to get used to the technique. He’s a superb lifter. I loved seeing Alexa trying many new things with lifts and I think they will continue to tinker to find what suits them best. And they can jump. Their identity for this year is people who are happy and appreciative to be able to skate. Alexa looks joyful in that program and it doesn’t feel romantic, it’s just lovely pair skating. Most of the music is quite grand which suits their elements. I like the contrast with the SP too. And their look together feels fresh.

I enjoyed the music of the top 2 US pairs, Knierim and Frazier and Calalang and Johnson, especially because every other pair was skating to warhorses. Alexa and Brandon looked strong for only having 3 or 4 months of real training together. I can't think of many new pairs that looked that good 4 months in. It was promising that their twist was bigger in the free skate than in the short, where they did it a bit more conservatively. It was still a great twist though considering they were meshing two different techniques. I like Dave's idea for their short, but I think combining two versions of one song in a short program would be too much. It's true Jessica has underrotation issues and I would hope that these virtual competitions are still looking closely at rotations. But I like their programs aside from the jump issues and relatively small throws, which aren't as strong as the rest of their pair elements, which are great. Alexa and Brandon are still meshing techniques on their throws. It looked like Alexa was doing different flip technique than what is natural to her, so they understandably have some gelling to do. But they're promising for sure. When they get more comfortable with lifts, I'd like for them to try that beautiful arched lift position Alexa did with Chris on the lasso lift in recent years before they took it out. The longer she and Brandon skate together, the better they will get at showing Alexa off to her full potential. I think they ultimately will end up being a stronger pair than Alexa and Chris. I agree that Tarah and Danny's issues aren't Dalilah's fault, and it feels like they're just changing something just because they've exhausted all other options. Cain and Leduc were more of the same, I felt. I was mostly into the top 2 pairs here.

Very out of date discussion about Bradie being older. Older than Mariah? Older than Alexa? Older than Madison? The skating world doesn’t need ageism to be relevant. Celebrating longevity ought not be limited to male skaters, pair teams, or dance teams alone. It is time to foster a positive environment for the adult female skaters. Allow young women to grow and thrive without such pejorative chatter. I realize skaters must learn to ignore the noise of the internet. ALL skaters deserve the respect to mature and thrive in their field of sport.

If Mariah Bell’s going to be doing an ABBA program, it better not include covers, “The Winner Takes It All” (if you want a sorrowful track, use “Slipping Through My Fingers” instead), and more than three cuts. Also, it’d be great if they utilized some of the lesser-known tracks, such as “Angel Eyes,” “If It Wasn’t For The Nights,” and “You And I.” Unfortunately, I have a feeling that they’ll do the complete opposite of everything I just stated and it’ll be a complete and utter disaster.

But your reaction seemed more personal, like you didn't like him for some reason. Ignoring that he did 4 quads in the FS and doesn't really need to a 4lz in September at a national "competition". Any idiot can see the 3lz will be a 4lz when he competes against tough competition. So even the fact that he can do multiple quads is somehow twisted to be something negative. To add, their criticism is subjective (what is not special? I love your thoughts, but sometimes you expect too much from programs in this judging system. I fully agree there's always room for growth, but I don't know how much of a masterpiece you can expect out of Nathan when much of his program is taken up by quads. His programs are good and he's doing what it takes to win. In pairs, Alexa and Brandon look great together and they have good programs, especially for being new. I believe I saw Renee Roca in a photo working with them, not Benoit. Alexa is smiling more than ever, and when she looks at Brandon he smiles back in a way I thought Chris was often too shy to do. I like their rapport, and it will grow as they go along. I think they should be allowed to receive at least half of their funding from last season, especially since Alexa is reigning National Champion. It's already clear after a few months they deserve proper funding. Of course they're still learning together and merging techniques, and there are a couple of adjustments to be made on the lifts and throws, but their debut this early on went about as well as could be expected. For those who really follow pairs, you know most new pairs struggle with things like 1 arm lifts or clean twists. Alexa and Brandon are way ahead of the curve and it was a great first time out. Give them time because there's a lot of potential.

@Sally Vee You are right but I don't think that either skater wants to win that way. Yuzuru's 4 Continent SP skate was flawless. I think Yuzuru 's problem is endurance. He makes mistakes because he is tired. He has asthma; that has to limit his time on the ice to a certain degree, . Now that they have shortened the long program that has to help him out. He is not going to compete this year, which I think is wise. This winter is going to be a Covid 19 mind blowing nightmare. I would never count him out of any completion if he is healthy. He is so flexible and emotional on the ice. The SWAN is iconic. That said, my taste leans to Nathan. He has an erudite connection to the music, which really works with his technical ability, for me. He is the most consistent skater on the ice and he has a work ethic that is mind boggling. He wanted to skate to classical music last year and this year he has his wish. Enough with the frou-frou packaging and the nit picky hair splitting, let Nathan be Nathan and you wont be disappointed.

One moment you say he is one of the greatest skaters of all time and the next moment you are saying you are completely underwhelmed. Last season all you could talk about was his costume. Really.....? You were in favor of more emphasis on performance and artistic presentation and less about the jumps, well OK. They have skewed the new rules in favor of Hanyu, which I personally feel is a little condescending to him but so be it. I am certain that Nathan will polish his programs to a brilliant finish, according to the new rules but I don't think that will be enough for you.....It is like you want Nathan to take all that brute talent and dedication and be someone else. Its like you want something nostalgic from him that he is just not giving you. Is it possible that you might be a bit contrarian ? Just saying..... Both of you are skating culture gurus and you do a great job of it. You are trend setters and taste makers and that in itself is a kind of power; all the more reason to be open and mindful.
