The PCS scoring in the men's short was literally a crime. They should all have their judging credentials revoked if they think that Vincent and Jason were in the same freaking universe of skating skills and transitions and performance. I know it's all quad quad quads but they inflate everyone's PCS so high that there is just no way that Jason can gain any points - and it's wrong, because the difference between him and the rest of the field should be significantly greater. It doesn't reflect what is happening on the ice and it is so frustrating!! Jason's SP is so technically difficult outside the jumps - every single move is a transition, he literally didn't stop to breathe, the speed through the whole programme was incredible. That takes complete mastery of the blade and incredible fitness and technical ability. I also honestly think that Jason should have had 10s across the board for that SP. Genuinely, what more could you want? Why have 10s if you won't use them?? The FS was definitely not up to the same standard - It was pretty clear that it was the first outing, and Jason said in press after that he was trying to figure out the pace of it and I think that showed, he was a bit tentative in the beginning and just seemed a bit more in his head. And an audience, lack of audience really affected that programme in my opinion. Obviously there were jump errors, and not unexpected considering how cold Jason came into this comp. But from what I saw in practice, his quad toe is looking much more rotated than I've ever seen it which is a big improvement. I think with some more outings, there is potential in the programme. BUT, SINNERMAN'S LIST FOR THE OLYMPICS!!! I just think he needs to bring Schindler's List back for the Olys. He's keeping Sinnerman and it's the perfect fiery, dynamic short programme, and would be perfectly complimented by the melancholy, haunting, lyrical free. Also he's comfortable with the programme, they can continue to add in transitions and tweak the choreo. I think with the way things are with the pandemic we can't rely on next season going ahead as normal so I don't know if there would be enough outings of a new programme to get it to where you want it for the olympics and lets be real - the end of Schindler's List where he collapses to the ice out of that final spin? It has olympic moment written ALL over it!!!

Alysa Liu was such a positive surprise. Not the complete doom we were expecting. The judges helped her out and were GENEROUS with the SP score, and then buried her after the free, strange that they turned on her like that, if they’d been a tiny bit more generous, she could have nabbed silver

Totally, emphatically agree about Jason Brown’s short program. Beyond fabulous! Also, I’ve reviewed the rules for spins and I just can’t figure out the justifications for level 3 and level 4 spin calls for some of the top skaters, particularly among the men. Jonathan's rant about costumes at 1:23:00 honestly has me going YES YES and more YES. Nathan's programs are such a snooze and its a shame because he is such a brilliant athlete but gives zero attention to his costumes and choreography. The comment about "ballet dancers dont wear trash bags for a reason" is so accurate- the baggy costumes make his already iffy spins look worse. Whereas look at Jason- both his costumes were simple, but elegant and FITTED. It really maximised his performances- Nathan needs to magpie a thing or two from his teammate. Also, if I turned up to my ballet classes in ill-fitting shirts like Nate, you bet my ballet teacher would make me regret it.

Alexa and Brandon were phenomenal. Expectations rose after they won their first Grand Prix, and they were solid again here and delivered two beautiful skates. I like their packaging, energy, super strong element quality, and the confidence they have as a new pair. Alexa is just awesome. It's so impressive and rare for a new pair to do throws that much spring, height and distance. They're much more advanced than other US pairs in this area. They're going to keep getting better, and I fully agree they can already compete with Kirsten and Michael and even some other top pairs. I'm so glad they teamed up. A well deserved dominant win. Without a landed quad or clean program, Jason's not going to get a PCS edge much bigger than that despite his great skating. And Nathan does need a costume that shows his body line. Overall I loved this Nationals, despite some of the camera angles, and it gave hope that you can indeed run a major competition safely and successfully during this time.

16:17 Alyssa Liu skated better than I've ever seen her skate. She's still a kid, she's a couple of months younger than my own daughter, and trying to find that space that ..... let's Britney this for a moment "I'm not girl, not yet a woman" ...... The Russian's package them as adults at age 9. I find that very unsettling. Alyssa is transitioning into adulthood, and she's growing, and her shape will change more. Forget the 3A and quad attempts, she has developed a sense of self, and awareness, and hopefully, this will continue to grow with her, and perhaps in 2 or 3 more years, she'll be a worthy "senior" ladies champion (again). I felt her skating this time around was so much better, it breathed better than I've ever seen before. I would love to see what could potentially happen if Jeremy was involved in the creative process for her in seasons to come. I think she (and Gracie for that matter) needs to watch the ice dancers, watch how they act and dance and perform, and make a killer music choice (with Jeremy) and let him choreograph it to suit her.

Unpopular opinion? I really don’t like Nathan’s long program- the whole thing- costume or lack thereof, snooze fest choreo. The music was so quiet all I heard was his skates on the ice and it was distracting! His technical content will always be spectacular, but in my opinion, to be an Olympic Champion, he needs a dynamic program to compete with what we saw Yuzu throw down at Japanese nationals. 🤷‍♀️

It’s my first time seeing all the American top men presenting their programs this season. Love Jason’s SP!! Glad to know this is what he plans to bring to olympics. I’m pleasantly surprised Vincent is more engaging in the programs, lots to polish up to do but he has all the time now that he’s taking a break from school. I’m a bit surprised by how lackluster Nathan’s programs are. At the start of the season I remember seeing lots of comments on the two masterpiece Nate has presented at the virtual comp. I wanted to wait until I can see all the top American men compete against each other so I didn’t check him out back then, had high expectations from all the fans buzzing but I must say I’m rather underwhelmed. Unlike Vincent’s situation, I think skipping on school might have a negative impact on Nathan, he seems drained and disengaged in this competition. Is the field too weak for him to get motivated? There’s something off about him that I can’t quite pin down on, but I think perhaps living a balanced school/skating life might be better for him.

Nathan's Philip Glass program is a masterpiece. You have no idea what you're even talking about. His SP is also very very good in terms of footwork and choreo. Some of you really love Jason but I find his programs not anywhere as cohesive as Nathan's. All those transitions just seem like a bunch of random, chaotic stuff tossed in together. There's really no rhyme or reason to what he's doing except that it's a bunch of stuff he can do when there's a change in the music. Each of Nathan's program actually has a specific theme(latin for the SP, minimalism for the LP), and the things he does and movement style he utilizes tie nicely into each theme.

The 3Lz-3Lo combo was never really landed cleanly and consistently. I think she landed 1 or 2 in B competitions and after that she popped or stepped out until later she dropped it to 2 3Lz-3T in the FP. IMO the way IJS works, 3Lz-3Lo in the free is pointless except you can do 8 triples. Besides optics (to prove that you can do difficult combos so that perhaps judges are willing to give increase PCS) no other reasons to do it. In SP yes, do it but mostly it's very risky to do it in SP.

Johnny made a comment that there should be more cameras so that the judges can have a better view of the skaters' jump. I think it was during Gabriel Izzo's short. Both Johnny and Tara seemed surprised at some of the scores but did not want to say anything more than what they said on air. Alyssa's skating looked better , but it seemed that the judges sent her a message that America needs her for the 3A and quads to compete with the Russians in the Olympics. I completely agree with Dave, C/B snake dance is still captivating. I also agree that Nathan will be behind Hanyu and Kolyada with that free program. I love that he won his 5th title but I would love to see Hanyu win his 3rd Olympic medal. However Kolyada's free is so captivating. Any chance that Paniot (? the one who got pewter) can be a threat next season?

I inherited a big collection last year. It was around the time they removed their entire channel for time. I always was given a bunch of videos to upload by another fan. 3-4 of their practice videos were in there. Instead of just asking them to be removed, they started a campaign that their footage was stolen. I did not intend for that at all and have been trying to grow my own library. I think it is ultimately great for fans for it all to be uploaded online.

Bradie's 3Lz+3T was marked for review but ultimately did not get a call. All of Karen Chen's triple jumps were marked for review. Mariah's 3Lz was her only element marked for review. Agree with the inflated scoring and under-rotate-gate. Speaking of 3L-3T... Dave! How would you compare Kristi Yamaguchi's 3L-3T during the 91-92 season against the under and suspected under rotated 3L-3T (like Brady's) at Nats? I mean, she wasn't the highest or most powerful looking jumper, but she landed that combo so successfully in many competitions (except when it turned into a sequence at 92 Nationals & the fall at 91 SA). When she executed them well, her blade looked to be facing the proper way despite her not having Midori Ito-sized power. How would you score her combo against how that combo was executed at this competition? Do you think if she were still competing (like Oksana Chusovitina in Gymnastics, who still vaults a double front), would she have made a formidable opponent (or made a strong case for podium finish) at the 2021 Nats. with a 3L-3T, and connecting her 3F-3T into a combo?

This is my opinion about the ladies: Bradie: Congrats to her for getting back the national champs, but she seriously needs to works on those combos, clearly under-rotated. And Girl.... please change the hairdo, matched it with the costumes at least. She has the potential but her packaging is always lacking. Amber: Good for her, great jumps, she's finally able to deliver 2 great performances (almost). To be honest, not a fan of her style (The music choices and the choreography). I keep comparing her with Liza Nugumanova's style in terms of music choices and packaging because she has a pop music choice but able to skate gracefully. Amber needs to have a new choreographer next season if she really wants to go to the Olympic. Karen: Finally!!!! She's back on the podium, but her under-rotation is keeping her off the 2nd or 1st. I feel she should be 2nd instead of Amber, Karen's PCS should be way higher than Amber's. or maybe Amber's PCS is too high (IMO). Alyssa: To be honest, I am shook! I didn't expect her to deliver this good. Of course, it was not her best performance, but she proved that she will work hard to get back to her form. Really interested to see her next season. Mariah: I think the ABBA's song should be banned from Figure Skating, I remember Mirai skated to similar music and had a meltdown during national. Mariah's jumps are scaring me now. It doesn't look effortless and there's always this pause before her jumps. I wonder what would be her next move.

24:00 Mariah's music - I've discussed this before. It's the wrong edit. It could be so much better. Abba "could" work for her, but it has to be the correct edits, in the correct order. To be fair, the edit she used for Nationals was better than previous edits, but it's still like watching 7 year olds doing a hot ice. I would (if I were editing for her) open with Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie (if that riff is good enough for Madonna, it's good enough for Mariah). It's not too fast, it's got enough of a tempo to get the crowd (and judges) going. Mariah seems very attached to that particular version of Winner takes it all. It's workable as a middle section, and sometimes it's interesting to bring in a cover version. To end, she would need to consider the audience (and judges). In Europe, Abba's biggest song is Waterloo, it's what introduced them to us in 1974 at Eurovision. We over this side of the pond, will always think Waterloo and Dancing Queen as Abba's biggest tracks. If it's a homage to Abba, it would have to end with Waterloo. There's no other choice.

Here for the Bradie Party Celebrating Team USA’s 2021 National Champion! I’m inspired by her journey, and see an athlete who truly skates with heart and soul. Her ability to focus and persevere is balanced by an open-minded approach to challenges. Not content to repeat previous programs, she forged a path with her choreo and a coaching change towards new music, new forms, new performances. Her SP derives tremendous energy and verve from a musical counterpart I had never thought of but once I heard this particular “Florence” selection, it was a match made in SP heaven. Fun, lively, confident and sharp. The black costume enhanced with red accents. Very cool, very Bradie. Well done, indeed. Then her FS moved into completely new territory. Again, new to me music (and I am a musical omnivore constantly expanding my personal musical library), deftly composed by her choreo. Elegiac at first, then a moment’s pause, followed by a crescendo of sound and movement. The fabric coloration of the costume is sublime. Vulnerability meets strength. It’s an emotional program, daring in concept, art performed on ice. Brilliant. Admittedly, I’m amused by commentary about packaging, as if she, or any of the skaters for that matter, don’t know what to do with their own frisure or skin tone. After all, we live in the age of diversity and inclusion, so naturally, what an athlete/artist conveys is exactly what they choose to convey. Far be it from any of us to mistrust their abilities, as if this monetized chatter (ie your revenue stream) bears any import in this field of sport. My problem with Bradie Tannel is that she always look lean forward... like people who are very tall walk down the streets. It distracts me from anything else... kinda Zagitova's "position" on her later years got me distracted from anything else (sorry I don't have a word for Zagitova's position when doing crossovers)

It does look like she has bad posture and skates hunched over. You can tell she worked really hard and deserved the win this year.

@@AuroraR thanks! I am not an english speaker and I don't have the words to describe some things. You really described what I wanted to say. What I mentioned doesn't take anything from her winning here... it's just like it makes it more difficulty for me to root for her as a skater I enjoy watching.

Yes! The way she skates has always given me Zagitova vibes (except she has much more speed than Zagitova and her crossovers aren’t as much of a struggle as Zagis were). I want to pick her up and straighten her torso every time she starts falling forward into that awful posture. It’s weird because she has decent posture as soon as she steps off the ice

When I saw Hubbell's bodysuit, I was glad the Christmas wrapping dress was gone, but this was worse. Her costumes are too distracting although the freedance dress was okay. Agree with you on Tanith, she is a great commentator for ice dance.

Jason's short is absolutely stunning, but I really like the free as well. However, I think it's the kind of program that needs to be skated clean, with an audience, to have the maximum impact. I could totally see him having an Olympic moment with that, but he really needs to execute all the tricks.

I’d like to see Gracie use a medley from Oklahoma! She looks a lot like Shirley Jones and could easily create the character. The Rodgers Hammerstein music with Shirley Jones’ voice would give the lightness and lift to let Gracie soar to the top. Just my opinion.

I didn't have a problem with Bradie's sexier black ensemble - it's better than the corny Disney princess stuff which she has outgrown - but she could really benefit from a stylist to put the entire package together better! Maybe dye her hair a hot blonde and put it in a more modern style and slap on a red lip with bold eyeliner! It would make such a big difference.
