Skullz reacts to The Vampyre Time and Memory by Queens of the Stone Age
Queens of the Stone Age (commonly abbreviated QOTSA) is an American rock band formed in 1996 in Palm Desert, California. The band was founded by vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme, who has been the only constant member throughout multiple line-up changes. The current line-up consists of Homme alongside Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, lap steel, keyboard, percussion, backing vocals), Michael Shuman (bass guitar, keyboard, backing vocals), Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar, percussion, backing vocals), and Jon Theodore (drums, percussion). The band also has a large pool of contributors and collaborators.[1] Queens of the Stone Age are known for their blues, Krautrock and electronica-influenced style of riff-oriented and rhythmic hard rock music, coupled with Homme's distinct falsetto vocals and unorthodox guitar scales.

When he says "does anyone ever get this right?" it feels to me like he's talking about life as a whole.

So now he’s back alive and is reflecting on his life and what’s important… “I feel no love”, he’s talking about cutting out unimportant people. Next song, he’s saying that if he “had a tail” he’d cut out the people in his life that aren’t important and using him. - I appear missing is possibly the best song in their discography. Don’t expect to beat it

I love your reactions. This particular QOTSA song has seen me through some dark days in a recent relationship. When I was trying to get her to listen to it with me (she also loves QOTSA), her response as a 42yo woman was; I hate vampires (smfh) . Now 3mo after that relationship ended, I couldn't be happier. Keep up the good work Skullz!

I followed the journey through Tool start to current, I am beyond excited to see a person of your musical appreciation and insight giving QOTSA a go. This band is just inedible. I've seen them about a dozen times live, no other band keeps me on my feet the entire show! My only wish is for you to start from the beginning of the discography.

In an interview, Josh related how he had been very ill and felt he was near death. This album and in particular this song is his reaction to that event and how it changed him.

Oh yeah, shit's getting real now on this album. There's so many layers, between songs and within songs and with the lyrics, everything. Great album for you to analyze. Btw, there are usually 2 guitarists - Josh plays lead sometimes, rhythm sometimes, and does the vocals. The other guitarist trades off rhythm/lead roles with him when appropriate, whoever it is per the era.

I love your reactions, because you actually take everything in and interpret it. Your pauses are perfect and you don’t make it about you. If you dig this band, you should check out Kyuss. Josh was the guitarist and played through a bass amplifier. The singer doesn’t have his range but is more rough and raw. They were big in the 90s and were pretty tight with Tool. Tool actually does a cover song by Kyuss called Demon Cleaner . Scott Reeder tried out for bass when Paul quit, and I believe he adopted Adam’s pet pig when he was no longer able to take care of him. They are stoner, psychedelic, funky, metal. I think their best album is Welcome to Sky Valley. They were bigger on the west coast and all grew up in the desert. Also just an fyi, if you’re able to react to Anthony Bourdain No Reservations with Josh Homme, then I highly recommend it as well. Josh takes him on a tour of the California desert where he grew up.

I missed out on this song for a long time until a recent discovery. So great to see someone getting the mood of it. It hit me hard. My 2nd favorite QOTSA song so far. HANGING TREE gives me that similar desperate mood. Wildly different pace, undeniably masterful.

I kind of agree. Like, since the guitar was only picking spots, it would be interesting to see if adding a David Gilmour, Pink Floyd-ish type drawnout solo would enhance the haunting, isolation of the lyrics and tone of the song.
