Meet ‪@xylafoxlin‬ - the latest subject of our ongoing docuseries highlighting creative people using the internet to break new ground.
Xyla is an engineer, pilot, KZfaqr and beauty pageant queen from Boston who’s using her online platform to prove that you don’t have to stick to just one lane in life. She’s challenging outdated notions of what an engineer looks like and working to lower the barrier to entry for women and minorities in STEM fields.

Thanks for showing it is ok to be yourself, break stereotypes, follow your heart and go do what some might think are crazy things. It is very inspiring to see when you fail and recover from failure. It makes your successes so much sweeter to see. I am always looking forward to seeing what you do next.

I subscribed to you a while ago. I always think i shouldn't sub to a tech channel just because its female although its always a welcome change. No i subscribed because I like the quality of your projects and of your videos just as much as of every other tech channel I watch! Don't reduce your qualities down to being female

I first found Xyla’s channel when I was looking for woodworking videos… she was making a canoe from scratch and I remember being so impressed with the quality of the build. I had no idea at the time that I was seeing the first videos of a truly badass, fearless engineer who just happened to be a beauty queen. This woman loaded her pageant tiara onto a rocket that she built and LAUNCHED IT. Pure awesomeness.

Agree, although what would be amazing would be a beeped version of this video. I don't want to stop the author from expressing herself, but not fond of exposing my 9yr old to adult language if I don't have to. ;)

What's great about her videos is she shows how she fails and how she recovers from those failures. That aspect makes her more relatable and inspiring since it is common for people trying something for the first time to fail. She shows that persevering through the failures is necessary to reach success. In a way, it is very appropriate that this video ends with her falling down since it shows that she is not afraid to fail.

@@philso7872 That is such a great observation! Experimenting, and being open to fail and learn from that, is such a fundamental part of the process or building or creating anything. So many people are held back by fear of failure, when it's actually an opportunity to learn and improve. I love that Xyla models that, and makes it so much fun to watch in the process.

I liked the final jump in the video. The message I got from it was: If you have an idea for something, try it with joy. If you fall, enjoy having tried, get up again, and have more fun.

At 30 seconds in, you comment on how creative and artistic engineering can be. I think that notion is absolutely spot on. I wish more artists understood that. As head design person at Jasper Guitar Company I found the video on your bass build. Great job on that. If you ever get near Green Bay, Wisconsin, come check out our guitar factory.

Women in engineering isn't a new thing. Queen Elizabeth II worked on Land Rovers during WWII and women maintained aircraft and ran the factroies in both wars over here. I'm an engineer and always encourage women to have a go. You're right, there's still a bunch of people (men and women) out there who can't accept women can do the whole STEM thing but I genuinely don't know where that came from. At least you have a platform to show there's another way and that's awesome- keep that role modelling going

Love this. All of this. My daughter and her best friend were on a robotics team as well, the twist was that they were the only ones who had ever used tools before, and it was AWESOME seeing them lead the team, showing the boys how to build stuff. Too bad Covid cancelled the competitions... It was an amazing learning experience anyway. Also, I think we visited your exhibit at the NY Maker Faire - not sure if you saw us launching rockets and paper airplanes up by the Eepy Bird coke and mentos show. Keep up the great work and have fun with the content!

Hell yeah! I've been turned away from tech jobs before because I'm feminine so I wear dresses all the time, and I get taken less seriously. I love that you take that issue head on! ❤️

I hope there were more content creators like her, to inspire more women to go into fields often viewed as "non feminine". There really is no good reason why they can't, it's just that our society doesn't provide equal support for all genders, when that just shouldn't matter.

People will be like “engineering is for girls!” and not realize that some university, mine included, have majority female engineering classes. And don’t forget the insane amount of scholarships available for them lmao

Harvard was established in 1636, but didn't fully admit women until 1977. Most universities didn't admit women into science programs until the 60s. That's hundreds and hundreds of years of women not being allowed to go to school. If a majority of engineering students were women for the next hundred years, and we all paid for it collectively, it would only be fair.
