We invited Xyla Foxlin to Narwhal Labs to use our makerspace to make a project! Xyla is an Ohio based Aviatrix, and chose to make an epoxy inlaid stained glass panel of the "Spirit of Columbus". The Spirit of Columbus is a Cessna 180 piloted by Geraldine Fredritz Mock - the first woman to circumnavigate the world during a series of solo flights over the course of 29 days in 1964. The Spirit of Columbus can now be found on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.

Great project, with attention to detail. Should you do another one like this, you can get solvent-proof polypropylene pipettes from lab supply companies. These could possibly make the filling of the fine spots easier than pouring. They allow dispensing of fine volumes much more smoothly than syringes as well.

Pretty good overall, white colour I thought could be a bit more opaque to make it look nicer. Saw some bubbles in the finished window so not sure when they got introduced. Another channel suggested using a heat gun to force the bubbles out of the epoxy before it dries.

Fun piece , stirring like sanding are part of the necessary evils of being a maker. I think Smaug in his golden chamber would be interesting. In some stained glass you paint in details. What paints would not be affected by the second pour?

Have you ever used one of those stirring machines, the 3D printed ones on Etsy work quite well for small quantities (not the vertical ones, but the slanted ones) but for slightly larger batches and for folks without budget concerns, a planetary centrifugal dental alginate mixer is a dream come true, they mix extremely thoroughly and don’t create any bubbles.

Hi Xyla - I haven't seen anyone else think to use Halcyon for UV protection and I think it's a brilliant idea. I have been doing some resin design on new windows that will be installed when I'm finished. The resin side will be on the inside. I'd like to protect it from yellowing. Does it make sense to use the Halcyon on the glass side that will actually be on the outside and the part that the sun hits first?

@NarwhalLabs 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Narwhal Labs is a venture of TotalBoat - we're VERY aware of epoxy use and safety. Xyla wore gloves through the project, and safety glasses are particularly important when doing large pours with very low viscosity epoxies where splashing is a risk. Safety is your own responsibility and we trust you'll make the safety decisions that are right for you.

I've got nothing to do with stained glass, so no clue why this video showed up, but it was interesting. :) I had only one question: Don't you have to protect both sides with halcyon??? I would do that, because it's really frusrtrating, when your artpiece's colors disappear over time, due to sunshine :/

Cool project, thanks for sharing! I am wondering though, why you didn't apply the Halcyon on both sides? Or will it absolutely block the UV rays and prevent them from penetrating the unprotected resin? I'm thinking reflection and heat could still cause yellowing if both sides aren't covered, but I am not a UV ray expert...just wondering. 😋

Do you have to use epoxy to seal the wood or can you just use wood sealer? Wood sealer in a spray can would be much faster. I would also stain the wood before sealing it to give it the look of the lead solder typically used in stained glass.
@NarwhalLabs
@NarwhalLabs 3 жыл бұрын
Wood sealer or spray varnish Dona great job sealing the wood grain itself, but air can still escape and leave behind bubbles in your final epoxy pours. Sealing with epoxy resin is a sure fire way to completely seal it.
