Yes, these birds can spend almost their entire 10-month nonbreeding period on the wing. There are videos showing how they feed in the air, they mate in the air, they get nest material in the air, groom their feathers, everything. They may only take a pause because of bad weather. It's uncertain if they sleep on the air or if they don't sleep at all. With short legs and long wings, they aren't able to take off from the ground. If you found one on the ground you must help her. I know all this because one was on my terrace a few weeks ago - it was after a storm, heavy rain, and strong winds - and I've been reading a lot about it.
