To all the viewers unfamiliar with Blazblue: whatever you do, do NOT ask about what that robot thing is in the background of the stage, unless you are prepared for a novel's worth of gobbledygook explanation filled with theories and speculation. Same applies for asking about any of the other stages, the characters, any of the story or whatever Mori was smoking when he approved any of this.

It’s really cool watching Monarch play. I got the chance to meet him at CEOtaku and he’s a really nice dude. It was around the time where I was kinda frustrated with some of the FGC and how they act, mostly Strive people. I’m working as a game developer and I wanted to make fighting games, and I wasn’t sure if I still wanted to because of that frustration. The BB community is really cool and have a lot of nice and talented players. I think it’s really awesome to see people who love this game play it so much and be so passionate about it. It really renewed my passion for both competing and making games as well.

Jiyuna, you gotta do these breakdown videos more often! Not only are they entertaining, they're informative - you are able to provide context to the match which adds a certain depth to the experience. I'm sure you could pick memorable matches from SF4, Tekken 7 (maybe even older Tekkens), and even KoF, too. I hope Japan is treating you well bro!

Blaz at that level really justifies how insane the characters are. Like find me any set from another game that looks more anime than what we just watched.

BBCF is so sick, there will never be another game like it

Nezu seems to be cursed when it comes to international tournaments. Never seems to be able to close them out. He came the UK and got bopped. Numerous 2nd place finishes...

Watching high level BB is always treat, and even though the series is not as popular despite the game's many strengths, it's also not surprising to me, since despite many FGC content creators trying to define what objectively makes a good fighting game, the reality is that the answer to that question is going to change depending on WHO you ask, EVEN among pro players. For instance, they are are pro players that only like fighting games that are primarily footsie based, so games like Street Fighter and KOF are games that they are most likely going to love and hate airdashers like BBCF, GGXRD, and MBTL. Personally, I prefer airdashers over purely footsie based ones, since the extra movement gives you more ways to approach the opponent during offense and neutral, but I'm aware it's an opinion that definitely isn't shared by everyone. Though this fact isn't surprising to me, since fighting games are still art and art IS subjective, and what is good or bad is going to VARY from person to person. And one of the things I value in the fighting game is unique characters that set them selves apart from each other, whether that be in terms of movement speed, defense, and ESPECIALLY game plan and unique system mechanics ONLY available to that character. It's one of the main reasons that I didn't like DragonBallFighterZ, since when that game launched the game felt very homongenized, and in that way didn't feel like an Arc System works Title at all, especially when you compare DBFZ to Arc System Work's earlier titles like GGXRD and BBCF where the characters were JUST AS complicated as the universal system mechanics themselves. And it's not just a problem I have with Arc either, since even more newer titles from other developers suffer from this issue I have with Homogenization, with games like the new Melty Blood, and even Tekken 7 suffering from this exact same problem ( infamous FGC Content creator Aris himself ADMITS that Tekken 7 is homongenized). Currently, games like BBCF, GGXRD, and SC6 are my favorite fighting games since all three have what I'm looking for, with BBCF being my number one, since that currently is the most unique fighting game currently out on the market IMO. I say all of this because if your love for the game is not there your chances of wining are MUCH lower, and those people will always be behind the curve of those who ACTUALLY enjoy the game. (High prize pool or not). So as someone who doesn't particularly care for footsie based fighting games in the first place ( like KOF, Street Fighter, DNF DUEL, GBFVS) the recent million dollar announcement for SF 6 doesn't do much for me in terms of motivating me to play the game. The only positive I see is that other fighting game developers may feel the need to have prize pools, to match their competitors to help keep interest in their games for casuals outside a particular community. That being said, I'm happy for Street Fighter fans and footsie based fans though.

I was wondering when you would do this. BTW, Monarch said in a Discord that when he watches his replays, the thing he pays attention to is his opponents’ inputs. He deliberately looks to his opponents patterns/habits. So he earned his defense. Also, once Monarch won game two, I knew Nezu couldn’t make a comeback. Monarch just frustrated him too much.

The best fighting games IMO make defense exciting by having varied options that are not all-encompassing and having the threat of offense so much higher. Blocking actually looks cool, and isn't strong on its own. BBCF has all that in spades. I first fell in love with Fenrich's Jin. Monarch is much the same.

Holy shit that defense is inspiring. I love seeing players with careful defense. It's super interesting, especially in games that have so much absolutely fucked up offense. Seeing people's groove get shattered to pieces because a guy can block or evade everything is entertaining in a very special way.

Watching that match reminds me of when I was first getting into UNIST. I was playing against a Waldstein who was clearly much better than me. It got to the point where they would actively just block and were trying to get me to mix them up any way I could.

One thing I've realized is that blue combos happen quite often, especially on Hibiki's side. Are tech resets that frequent and powerful in this game ? (Skullgirls-style) Did Monarch just "take the hit" or did just not care ?

Monarch truly is a monster like no other

Basically against someone like monarch you need to just do 10 pressure resets in a row and if that doesn’t work, just do 20. In serious. There’s a character in tekken named hwaorang. Almost zero mixups, but his pressure is literally infinite so he opens people up just because they are trying to get out of the pressure. Monarchs defense is amazing because he prioritises blocking over jabbing which means his mental stack is less when defending but he’s open to pressure resets because the defense is so soft. Anyways that’s the way one “should” go about beating him. If it were me I wouldn’t do one overhead/low until I get him to try to jab out. Because that’s the point where he will have switched his inactive defense to active and that’s the point where the mental stack can start to get overwhelming. Anyways great defensive play from him, I’m sure many players try to pressure reset him to death and he still blows them up because of the skill difference… like when you have a zoner against a grappler and the grappler still wins.

It's shit like this that makes BB sick. I've played since CS2 so I'm super used to all the defense options. I played DNF Duel for a couple weeks and was just shocked at how there is basically 0 defense options. In comparison to BB it's not even close, game's tight.
