You need to close the triangle on the view side of the house or your walls will spread. Looks like this little wall braces are holdup your walls at this point. ❤
@HaydenGatesOR
@HaydenGatesOR 8 ай бұрын
You can do it with a single temporary rafter tie. So maybe halfway up the triangle on the 3rd or 4th rafter, (so you have room to build the front wall) you put a temporary rafter tie or two across, that triangle will keep things from spreading while you're building. Maybe one on Rafter 4 and one on Rafter 8 or so... Use construction screws, at least 3-4 for each connection. Leaving up any bracing until you have sheathing on (plywood) is the way to go. Bracing FTW.

@@HaydenGatesORsome permanent ties at 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 points (depending on how loft is built) would be structurally appropriate, ideally these would be at the top of the wall, but even when they are near the Ridge, the still help to prevent the roof saying and the top of the walls spreading. This is why in many old timber buildings that have a cathedral ceiling, there is a flat ceiling 2' to 3' wide.

You probably thought of this already, but to lift your 100 pound windows into place, a multi-stage pulley (snatch-block) with an arresting brake could work well. You'd need to have a sling on the top rafters to support the pulley(s), and some good sling methodology for the windows, but at least the pulleys would be doing the lifting. Also consider getting a couple of those suction cup handles that window people have do you'll have some handles to grab on to when you're up there with the windows. And, this may go without saying, but it would be ideal to have 1 or 2 friends come up with you on window installation day (maybe make a weekend of it, sleeping on the floor surface of your unfinished cabin, so you'd have more time to get all of it done in one trip to the cabin). I always look forward to your content. Love your approach to your builds!

Your a beauty, a backwards beauty but backwards works for you! I like the way you framed out the end wall piece by piece. Probably the easiest way when working alone. It's coming together, can't wait to see more progress.

You should add rafter ties to three or four rafters at the open end to prevent them spreading and pushing the walls out. Also continue the centre stud of the back wall down to the floor. Looking great with unbeatable views!
@arlisscott3455
@arlisscott3455 8 ай бұрын
Agreed, the center stud needs support from the floor up to the roof as load support! Most builders have sheeting on the walls before roof joists as it makes the building more secure and stable. Just a thought.

Plumb up the back wall and put a 45 brace up to the ridge board from the double top plate. The rafters won’t “ go their own way” then.

Hey gram, I have a suggestion, put your door facing the toilet, but with an extended deck that circles around 2 of the main sides of the cabin( the valley view and the toilet), so yoi have a outside area that is high enough for you to enjoy the mountain view and don't block the windows you are planning for that wall. Keep going!

Have you thought through your interior layout at all? Might be helpful to think through that in relation to your door placement and not loosing too much usable interior space. I am guessing the windows won't open? May be nice to have two doors for some cross ventilation if that is the case!!

Even if you haven't decided what you want to do with the front of the cabin. I think I would at least want a load header across the front to keep the walls from pitching out from the load of the roof trusses.

Graham, when you go to install the windows, use some heavy weight glass suction cups, rig an electric winch on the ceiling or rafters and simply hoist the glass up where you need it to be to get it into the opening. Just my $.02😊 Otherwise, good work today!!❤

Looks good. You are solving a future build for me. Similar design but with overhanging lofts to create covered porches. With the racking that’s occurring on the loft wall, do you have top plate to sill plate 45 degree bracing? That would be a bummer if it all came down with high wind

I noticed you didn’t put an overhang on your ridge. You need at least a foot on each side, I’d recommend 2 feet. You cut a notch in the wall rafters every 4 feet to tie back your barge rafter with 2x4/6 laying flat to your second inset rafters, that way your barge rafter is securely framed to the roof. If not water will shed down your walls pretty bad and will be much harder to waterproof and keep water from getting behind the wall and inside. Also you need to at least put a temporary board across the top of you’re view wall to tie them together or the weight of the roof will start to spread them apart and in worst case cause them to fall and everything they’re holding aka the roof you’re working so hard on.

What is up G-Man first I'd like to say that the window won't ya you don't want a big solid door right in the middle of it that would look kind of strange so I would go with a glass door or one on the side the second thing I want to ask is are you having a loft in this place . if not all the windows up high are going to be is Windows up windows up high LOL but anyway my friend you're doing a great job keep up the work can't wait to see how it turns out however long it takes you know what they say take your time do it right good luck buddy I'll keep watching. 👍😊

The most common and most aggravating mistake I've seen made on these channels is to size the rough opening on a window or door incorrectly. Make a 1/4" plywood traced (not measured) template of your window and make sure it absolutely, positively fits when you make the rough opening. Might even fur out the edges to the 1-inch thickness of your actual window...Again, don't measure, use the actual window to make every dimension of the template.
