EVAP systems can be a pain to diagnose. My 97 f150 kept throwing P1450, took me a awhile to figure it out, turned out it was a plugged up canister on the right side and the purge solenoid filter. Of course my tight wad refuse to be a new one, so I cut the top of it off, emptied it out and cleaned up the clog filters caused by dirt. Filled the canister back up with the charcoals and resealed it with silicone gasket sealer. Ford has two canisters on it, but it's only the right one that gets plugged from how it's designed. Left one never gets plugged, it's the right one that takes the abuse. Thanks Ford for making it more complicated than it should be.

Being an old retired mechanic you got to love when somebody shows old school hacks that the younger mechanics don’t think of. That paper trick works on all kinds of vacuum related things. Don’t think your PCV system is working and it’s pushing oil out some of the seals and gaskets, start the engine take the oil cap off , put a piece of paper over the filler, it should have a mild vacuum at idle. Older style heater controls not working, put a piece of paper over the vacuum supply hose. You guys get the idea. 😊😊😊

My '19 impala had a recall notice for the same purge solenoid but mine didn't meet the criteria for replacement. I did it anyway but didn't know there was a way to test them. Now I do. Thanks.

My son just picked up nice older Focus with low miles. While checking it out it had check engine light ( which we weren't worried about, we would figure it out ) and the owner said he thought the idle was a little high. I told him it could be a vacuum leak and that could be why the light was on. Upon getting it home and checking codes it said it was EGR related. It's all right on top but intake hose is right on top of it. I wanted to put a hose on EGR and suck on it to see if it was working, it was . Checking to see if it got any kind of vacuum I noticed it was not plugged in right to begin with. A bunch of starts after plugging it back in the light went out. Turns out it was pretty much exactly what I told the guy.

Nice and well explained. Would be nice to show bad purge valve fuel trims to see the rich condition. I would have expected the precats to correct the a/f mixture to return it to stoichiometric.

Kenny, you're suppose to disconnect the power connector too to ensure the purge valve isn't being commanded on or you risk getting a false positive for stuck open purge.... hehe watched the rest of the video. Ok you're clear lol

do you think the silicone could foul the o2 sensors? remember the silicone sealer in the 80s ?
@WrenchingWithKenny
@WrenchingWithKenny Жыл бұрын
It's such a small amount that I wouldn't be concerned at all . The early 02 sensors were also not heated like today's sensors . The silicone would stick and foul them out

Wouldn't yo use 1 1/2" impact to reef down that purge solenoid? You want those as tight as you can possibly get them, even if it means destroying everything that you touch!

@@WrenchingWithKenny 2013 5.3 Silverado P219A since bought in 2016. Comes and goes. Drives perfectly fine. New MAF, two new upstream 02's, new intake gasket, (old one had a bad spot), new plugs and plug wires, I did a decarbon process in 2021. Somewhere along bank one still an issue lean/rich? I have not had injectors looked at yet. No feel of a misfire. DTC code comes on while driving at highway speeds. What is left to do?

@Bruce Kennedy , I delt with this on a 13 Avalanche 5.3 . It had bounced around a few shops before I worked on it . They did all the things you did . What I found was the first shop replaced the upstream 02 sensors with aftermarket. I figured, "Bingo" , here's the issue . So I installed factory ones (I highly recommend factory sensors for this) .. Truck was fine for nearly a month and then the same code returned. I then started going over everything once again and realized the rear most exhaust manifold bolt on the drivers side (Bank 1) had broken off. Usually you hear an exhaust leak, but I didn't on this one. I extracted the bolt and replaced it . Problem solved . The exhaust leak managed to allow extra oxygen in the exhaust and skewed the reading slightly. Just enough to set that code . A friend of mine also said he had one that had a crack in the exhaust pipe right around the upstream 02 bung , where it was welded to the pipe . This caused the same issue . Hope this helps !

@@WrenchingWithKenny thanks will consider that for sure, at the high mileage of my truck I have noticed a little ticking when cold which can lead me to believe you may be on the right track. Manifold likely heats up and moves a bit.

Personal opinion. I do like the tried and true Toyota models. But if I were to buy a newer vehicle, I'd probably buy a KIA or Hyundai. When it comes to trucks however, I'd go with GM, then Ford or Dodge. I'm not a fan of Toyota trucks honestly. Nissan is bottom of that list . Honda is OK, but I don't think they are as good as they tell everyone they are .
