In this video I have a look at a customers 2012 Chevy Silverado that has the classic P0172 and P0175. It also has a P0101 so we'll have a look at that too. These are both pretty easy to correct.

Agree. I had a 91 mazda b2200. Less that 40k on it. California. It failed smog miserably and was tagged as a gross poluter for tge rest of its life. Took it to the dealer. They said the cat was bad. Paid to have replaced. Still gross poluter. Took to a couple mechanics. And one guy got all the smog readings and pondered for a while, staired at the MAF sensor for a while, then offered me $500 for the truck, that hesitation looking at the maf made me think twice. Took it home. Sprayed carb cleaner and what do you know. Fixed. Scammers everywhere.

Sometimes getting manufacture specific info can be awesome. For my ford I use forscan and I got a check engine light for a map sensor out if range code. When I scanned it was saying the code was not active but it keeps the light on. If I took it anywhere they would have swapped the sensor and the harness. I just rest the code and had no issue, bought some cleaner and cleaned all 3 sensors and have had no issues since. Just a one time freak out if range code.

Great info on alcohol content and reset for fuel trims! In the real old days we adjusted trims by first removing q-jet carburetor and grinding the anti-tamper plugs out that covered the mixture screws in carb base plate,then re-install on engine and adjust to best manifold vacuum. If you were real high tech you would use a 3 gas exhaust analyser and set co at about 1.5 to 3.0 percent. This is back when men were men and hotrods were built in Detroit.

In 1978 I put Mobil 1 oil in my Dads Olds Cutlass at his new house. My youngest sister scratched her name and the year in the cement garage floor when they poured it, that's how I know what year it was. The Mobil 1 oil can said it was "guaranteed" for 25,000 miles. When I changed that oil my Dad said he was not comfortable going 25,000 miles on an oil change, so we adopted a 10,000 mile interval. Mobil 1 wasn't brand new brand new, but it was relatively new on the market so I didn't know anyone using it. We felt like pioneers using it. Today I have a 1998 GMC Yukon with 325,000 miles on it, and I have always put Mobil 1 oil in it at 10,000 mile intervals. Dad's Cutlass was a cast iron 350 Olds I have a cast iron Chevy 350 Vortec. Dad's car was Quadrajet carbureted I have Central Sequential Port Fuel Injection commonly called a "Spider." Neither one of the 2 engines used any oil to speak of at all. I do live in Southern Michigan and have to admit the salt ate Dad's Olds and my GMC is an eyesore, but they didn't use oil. We never ever added any between changes. I also have a 2017GMC 4.3L V-6 VVT GDI w/ AFM and it uses some oil between changes, but I go by the DIC when to change it, so I don't know how far it goes. I wonder why my newer truck uses oil. It's not leaving spots on the garage floor, so it must be going out the tailpipe. Why? And I wonder how much fuel we had in our iron 350's oil at 10,000 change intervals.

True, provided you have an expensive analyzer and know how to use them. I'm a retired mechanic, and it just wouldn't pay to purchse one for the possible one or two times I may need it. Chevy also has a computer update, at least they did for my 2010, that fixed some of the programming logic. I was having a to reset the alcohol content once a week as the truck would get really hard to start from cold. I had my shop run the update on the computer and have not had a problem since.
@fixingitrightish
@fixingitrightish Жыл бұрын
Their programming "logic" is so ass backwards. In my impala if it is super cold outside and doesn't reach operating temperatures within a certain amount of time it throws an error for the temp being out of spec. It doesn't have a code for the engine being cold so it throws the code for the engine overheating instead, because wtf else is it supposed to do lol. It then turns off the temp sensor, disables the air conditioning and kicks the radiator fans onto high. My car is cold and it's actively making it colder.

None of the tests were responding to give me a definitive solution, out of aggravation I started part chasing, was into a Map sensor, and just returned from the auto store with a Maf sensor. Maf sensor got me to -19 from a previous -28 on both banks. Little improvement but did not solve the problem. Long story short, I found this video 2 parts too late. You always have great content. I Disagree on the "Clean ethanol" statement. By the time you farm all the corn (electricity to irrigate, diesel fuel to plough the fields and harvest) then ship the corn then process it into ethanol you have created more pollution than your offsetting. Then you have less horsepower so you burn more fuel.

Really enjoy your videos! I bet they have been running that truck super rich for a while and the gas vapors in the crankcase remains for a while. I used to own an old '85 Chevy that was owned by a local propane company that was running a propane setup complete with a small tank. I took all that stuff off and bolted up a nice 4BBL carb and installed a new gas tank. Lot easier to gas it up than constantly need to get propane. It always smelled like a barbecue grill when it ran, even on gasoline!! Just couldn't get those vapors out of that engine. You're the best, Eric! Thank you for all you do.

Nice video and explanations like always. I will watch anything you upload since I seem to always learn something. You could upload a video on putting on shoes with Velcro straps and I would watch that too. 😂😂

Eric I love your videos and especially your hate of the Chevy. I would love to share that I own a 2008 Silverado with 295,000 Kms…V8, DOD/Fuel Mgmt etc…this truck has an oil life monitor which I have followed since day 1…it’s now starting to burn oil more recently which is understandable. I just felt like sharing this with you. Thanks for the great videos. Oh by the way I am in Canada with the winter salted hwys like you in NY State.
