About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I've seen wen male ducks go after females in the water practically drowning them while many duck climb on and peck at the females head until she finally has had enough flying away with several males chasing her. Boys, back off!!

I started out with 4 ducks, 3 drakes and a hen ( Cash, Madonna, Prince and Alton Brown). Needed more gals so along came Aflac and The Spice Girls ( one drake, two hens) THEN I continues to watch Gold Shaw Farm more and more and ultimately ordered 9 additional hens...16 ducks and I love them more than the 40 plus chickens I have! If I had more land, I'd def. have geese. I feel they are too loud if you have neighbors who do not farm :(

That shed for Toby’s perfect. And what would be even better is if you stuffed straw on the size top and back around Tobeys igloo to give it insulation for the winter even maybe put some underneath the pallet. What do you think?
@judil3294
@judil3294 3 жыл бұрын
Dogs bred for the north are quite amazing in what they tolerate, Our huskies would just curl up in the snow at minus 30 F rather than seek shelter. Of course they had plenty of snow which I gather gives some insulation.

I agree, you need to move the silkies into the main fence for the winter, so Toby can keep an eye on them too. And yes, a few more silkies in their coop, would generate a bit more warmth. Plus it would be easier for you to care for them. Moving their house should be easier now that you have a tractor. :)

Just a suggestion but around here farmers cover the open side of the shelter like you got for Toby with truck rubber floormats the dogs can use their noses to move the flap to enter (you only fasten them at the top) and after they enter the mats are heavy enough to fall back in place keeping wind and snow out. Your shelter looks a lil tall for the mats so if it is put boards/ logs across the bottom till high enough that the flaps cover the opening with a few inches at least overlap :) When we moved to our last farm we wer surrounded by state forest land with large lake that we were like 200 ft from. I finaly settled on Cayuga ducks as my favs no drakes but turned out we didn't need them as our property sat smack dab in the middle of mallard migration spot so yeah our girls got broody w/ mallard daddys lol what was cool was some of the females from the crosses laid blueish eggs some tan, some grey and a few whitish.... so i decided to keep all the blue egg layers till my flock laid mostly blue eggs :)

Our Cayuga duck is a natural mother, too!! She went broody a few times this summer and almost hatched a clutch, but the nest was attacked one night (outside of the coop). Only one egg survived and I was trying to hatch another in my incubator. I put the remaining egg in with my other one and they hatched on the same day a few weeks later! They are so beautiful, Cayuga mom and Pekin dad, and even though they are both males and we already had one other male, we are keeping them. We named the one that survived the attack, Trooper, and the other drake is Anitra (drake in Italian).

My husband is a Latin Professor at a classical charter school K-8. Currently, he is teaching his students online due to the pandemic; however, he plans to use your phrase, “Release the Quacken” when he dismisses his younger students (4th through 6th graders) from Latin Class when they eventually go back to regular in-class school. He thinks it is hilarious when you “release” the ducks and they waddle out of their house! He’s hoping to bring that humor to his students. Thank you for posting your videos! They are most enjoyable!! Blessings to you, your wife and all the “creatures great and small” on Gold Shaw Farm!

dogs can easily do well outside in the winter.even in harsh cold winters esp. a guarding breed like toby. but they need some minimum requirements the structure needs to be totally wind proof and enclosed. if not using a pass thru door ,it should have baffles to break up the space between the entrance door and bedding area. and they need lots of bedding straw

So, I have a story for you @goldshawfarm. I watched this video a few days before one of my own Khaki Campbell ducks went missing. She disappeared, no feathers on the ground or sign of a struggle. I would have just assumed that she was gone because of a predator anyway. But I remembered your video and started hoping. She is still missing, and it has been long enough now that I think she is really gone. The day after she went missing though I put eggs into the incubator, including some of hers. They started hatching today, and so far I have 3 new ducklings and 12 more working on it in the incubator. So what I really want to say is thank you, because you got me thinking about incubating eggs even though winter is on its way, and my duck's children will live on.

we call our ducks Laffy taffys cause they all quack together like they are laughing. we own 2 Cayuga's emerald and jade. emerald was the most green until fall then she started to look like yours while jade stayed black/green. my sister thought that was kind of funny cause they are the sisters (as in same hatchery and date)both will be a year in April.

Love this video. Especially like how you name all the animals, and remember who is who!
