The Power Base Converter is still my favorite Sega add-on. It's the way I first played Phantasy Star back in the day...and it's still my preferred way to play it to this day.

The Sega Master System was my second system but the only system I fondly remember since the Atari 2600 got put in the closet soon after my dad got the Master System, and then I went from Master System directly to Super Nintendo so that was a pretty big jump.

i've been on a SMS longplay kick recently. Been having a playlist w/ random games playing. SMS had a lotta games haha. Some looked really good for the hardware limitations.

What a time to grow up in, I loved my mighty master system & yes I always wondered about the slot underneath the console . Blocked off by a plastic tab it might have been yet the connectors were there waiting for some mythical device to be connected to it. One friend reckoned that if you married a cartridge up to the connectors it would play as if connected to the main cartridge input port (yeah I never tried it either 😆) such a brilliant system and one that still has a place in my heart today, & space in my collection.

This is technically correct as the expansion port parallels the cartridge slot , I’m contemplating attaching the master everdrive to the expansion slot and making my own sega FDD but using SD cards instead

Another reason the FDD failed is likely RAM. Memory was still at a premium, and having something that could support a minimum of 360K would require close to the same in RAM.

Weren't there some kind of glasses that were supposed to make certain games 3d? I never actually saw them.... I only knew one kid who ever had a master system but he talked about them.

I had a pair with space harrier 3d and zaxxon 3d. The effect was impressive. A flat 2 dimensional image popping out of the screen sort of. The shutter lense technique was effective. I sold them when I had to ditch my crtv and go smart tv.

It was what happened with the Famicom disk system that killed the Sega floppy disk addon. Nintendo found out that floppy disk piracy was much easier and more rampant than cartridge based games. While yes Nintendo tried to stop the piracy with keyed floppy disk cases it didn't work. Hackers would transfer the disk to a standard case or just filed off the metal tabs that prevented standard floppy from working.

FDS along with Famicom BASIC enables flourishing & thriving home brew ecosystem. Rumor has it that Nintendo being bummed about that because at that time Nintendo hasn't yet figured out the method on how to monetize such situation.

'Ishikarara'. Heh Fascinating look on the Sega side of 80s floppy add-ons. The Famicom Disk System certainly is the more recognized of the two 'Floppy' stories here, and I believe that one was even briefly-popular for awhile over there. Close to where I live is 'Nintendo New York', where there famously sits a mini-museum, and on display is a full set of prototype accessories that would have made the NES more like its original 'Family Computer' pitch, complete with keyboard and cassette tape deck. Their designs made it seem like Nintendo was going to take a bite at the Commodore 64 (And that tape-deck would have been able to save certain game-data like the player-created levels in Exceitebike), but all of this ultimately never happened.

Very interesting. Floppy disks would probably still have been cheaper to use for games than manufacturing cartridges. Of course then you open the door to piracy as floppy disks could be fairly easily copied. If not with a computer by the average user, than by an organized pirate group with a disk duplicator. BTW, what is the video shown at 9:39 and 9:53, with the couple using floppy disks, and what looks like a Mac?

The European retail demo unit uses the covered expansion port under the Master System. I’m not suggesting that’s what it was there for originally but it is used for that at least. Likely they were thinking ahead for an add-on like you suggest.

You could easily make a “sega FDD” by using two female cartridge connectors and attach one side to the expansion port and the other to a master everdrive and house it in a 3d printed shell to look like the add on

I remember as a child calling SEGA's hotline and suggesting that they focus on addons to make the machine more powerful. If only I'd known... Instead of these early addons, SEGA should've brought out the System 16 (Megadrive/Genesis), saving money by not worry about backward compatibility with the Z80 SMS and its graphics modes.
@greenkoopa
@greenkoopa 8 ай бұрын
They should've made the Sega CD into a single unit with a form similar to the Saturn. Pushed that as their "next level" then make the Saturn back-compat my God why did they f*ck it up so bad Doing that would've forced CD prices to drop because of the additional use/production I've thought of this in a lot of depth. In 96, sign a contract with wcw to capitalize on the 'tude and nwo angle, it fit with the edgy image and everything

@@greenkoopa"Instead of an addon make it a new system that was backward compatible with the $150 Mega Drive. And to save money on the machine, have people buy a $150 Mega Drive as an addon to the new CD-based console to play those old games." Huh?

Why do you keep on bastardizing the FAMILY COMPUTER as the famicom?! Its clear as day in its label as the family computer. Yet you’re clear at saying NES aka Nintendo Entertainment System. Are you referring always on the sharp twin famicom? Or its just only cute to say it that way?!

@@schaffiourketaris2691 i suppose you grow up with your "NES" this thinking like other western youtubers state. In its heyday in asia, only certain carts state it as famicom, aside from sharp branding it as such. Otherwise in asia where it thrives, its known officially as the FAMILY COMPUTER. Its just sounds more japanese-like to confuse its name as famicom
