One issue is that local zoning and inspection are often uncooperative or hostile toward self-builders, especially self-builders with non-conforming ideas. The same can be true for appraisers, lenders, and insurance providers. Construction practices have become highly regulated and uniform, regulators like it that way.

Shredder built, tested, and ready to go. It works exceptionally well, getting down to over 90% tiny beads. Luckily, there's three places near me that are being built with big walk in coolers, and the sheer amount of styro waste from those 4x8x8" thick panels they use that I've fished out of their dumpsters has given me a massive amount to stock to work with.

By the way, for what it's worth, I've found that a wire grid (½") bakers rack cut to size works really well to posistion at the exit chute to moderate the shred size. I didn't find any adhesive up to task in securing it, so I used small L brackets and screws to fasten at a couple key points and it's working quite well so far.

This sounds so amazing, honestly! Alas, the price is beyond us and I'm not even sure our country has all the stuff that might go into making it. We do have abundant waste like styrofoam and part of our advocacy is trying to teach people in poorer areas to build better while using cheaper materials too, specially since we live in a typhoon prone area. Could you perhaps share a standard (not your proprietary Abundacrete/etc stuff, of course!) mix/ratio/formula using styrofoam and cement that you think would work as well? why the A-frame? wouldn't a flat roof save building cost and also usable roof deck?
@AbundanceBuild
@AbundanceBuild 10 ай бұрын
With our method you can definitely build a flat roof building. We have built several shapes and found the arched A-frame to be the simplest to build. The single arch geometry is easy to replicate. Because the roof is in compression, the building is stronger and performs much better in weather and earthquakes. Also it looks cool! Ultimately, we want everyone to build whatever suits them, so we make it cost effective to do it!

Steven, I love your videos and what you are doing. How does this compare price wise and structurally with a pole barn? I am looking at a place that already has a cement slab from an old building that I am considering building a 30' x 40' workshop on that slab with either 16' or 20' ceiling. Would these kind of walls support that size of roof? What are your thoughts?

@@AbundanceBuild I just had a thought. I wonder how this would integrate with 3d printed walls? Using the 3d material to support the load of the roof and this to fill in the gaps. It would be super insulated and perhaps you could 3d print two or three feet of elevation at a time and then stop and fill it with this stuff and then 3d print the next 3 feet. it would make placing and packing this material a lot easier if you only had to do a 3 foot deep section at a time. Thoughts?
@AbundanceBuild
@AbundanceBuild Ай бұрын
@@KellyLCall I think that is the best way to integrate it with 3D printing! But the cost of moving the giant 3D printing rig and the fact that it cannot do roofs has made us less interested in 3D printing and doubtful it will ever create "affordable" housing

Building codes vary by location and we can't make a single product that fits every situation; that is why we made a course that covers several methods of building with the materials. Could there be a rot issue if the studs are In bedded in concrete foam? Let's say you get a little leak in your exterior skin couldn't the concrete soak up all that moisture and it might not dry fast enough to prevent rotting of the studs. An interior dehumidifier could be used but not ideal. It's kinda like you have a giant sponge in the walls.

@AbundanceBuild this seems extremely... ambitious right from the gate, with so many courses across such a rather wide array of disciplines. My original plan was to enroll in a single course at $300, the abundacrete specifically, to ascertain (at a base minimal expenditire allowed) whether I thought more courses were going to be worth it to me, insofar as information quality, course layout, ease of learning, online support, and other metrics experienced within the initial course. This new layout ups that initial expenditure by 66% (although I'm cognizant of the fact it lowers the overall). I'm still with you at this point, though I'm feeling the tinge of hesitancy now, I'll admit. Just some input from one of your viewers for what it's worth. I've been offgrid 100% for 12 years now in a house I built myself, with a system I designed and implemented myself before all the KZfaq offgrid/alt power/etc gurus existed. I'm not a stranger to taking plunges into uncertain waters by any means.
