I was lucky enough to have been able to visit Imagineering on an Adventures by Disney tour of Hollywood and Disneyland and was impressed by the intelligence, creativity and enthusiasm of everyone we spoke to from Imagineers who were just hired a few months ago to those who had been there 40+ years. We even got to chat briefly with Josh D’Amaro and though he couldn't tell us specifically what was coming he did tell us a little about his appreciation for Walt, Disneyland, and Imagineering and his enthusiasm about what was coming was contagious and really, really encouraging.

I don’t doubt he’s a genuinely good guy that’s enthusiastic about the history of Walt and Disneyland but for some reason when he publicly talks to the media about what’s next for Disneyland, it all comes out like a corporate script. He recently explained how x-franchise is popular and has yet to be untapped at Disneyland so he’s leaning towards that (I’m paraphrasing) but it just comes off as reactive and inconclusive rather than proactive to Park decision making. I knows he’s passionate but whether it’s corporate mandate or current culture at Disney that’s influencing him, Parks/Imagineering never sound solid or on the same page anymore.

@@b_d15 That's the curse of huge, bureaucratic, publicly traded corporations...they look quarters ahead instead of decades ahead. There are many, many true fans, artists, engineers, etc., burrowing away down there below the surface level, though, and my hope is that they will be able to weather the storms blowing around on the surface and continue to be able to come up with amazing things for us to enjoy.

A full third gate in the Toy Story lot would definitely require them to buy garden walk and build a bridge over Katella. Throughout the Disneyland forward campaign they’ve emphasized that they’re not buying more land so either they have some sneaky plans going on or it’s another 20+ years down the road.

Thanks again for a great video, Brickey! Im in the camp that the first projects involving Disneyland Forward will be the Eastern Gateway. You gotta make parking before you take parking. After that, it will be projects that support guest and traffic movement around the resort. The last phase will be theme park construction. That’s my thinking anyway. Can’t wait to watch it all unfold!

That parking garage will be huge and will be a massive game changer. I have been going to Disneyland since the early 1970's and it has been so fun to see the transitions over the years (with the one exception being Tomorrowland). I wonder if they could actually have people movers going from the Eastern garage into tomorrow land. This would be one happy Disney fan if that happens. Bring back people movers!!!

Thank you for summarizing this for us! Really great work. I agree, and it makes perfect since that Disney will break ground with the parking structure first: they probably have most (if not all) planing done for it and they want people to park somewhere while they tear down the other parking spaces. But 3 things come to mind: 1. I agree they can re use the shuttles space and esplanade area - but I still think Disney would want you to enter through Main Street. How do you think they accomplish this while using the new space? It’s hard for me to imagine. 2. I feel that Toy Story parking lot is big, but not enough for a new land that is worth the travel time to it (even if it’s from the edge of DCA). I think Disney would build a budget hotel (think all star in Disney world) with restaurants and shopping area. They know that the surrounding area is budget option for people and I think they want some of that action. But I think Disney would put a spin on it so it would still be an experience people want to see. 3. Do you think Disney would get rid of Mickey and friends / Pixar pals parking structure? I feel like if not now - then in the future. I know this structure costs them millions - but it might be cheaper than buying new land. I don’t think they would do it in the near future: but maybe in 10-20 years… what do you think?

Long time viewer/subscriber to your channel. Glad the 100 days went our way! I agree with you closing comments about Garden Walk. Disneyland Forward asked for several changes to Garden Walk and up to "4 time share hotels" in that area. Do you think Disney may have already made an offer that was contingent on DF being passed? Because they certainly zoned it like they owned it. Little off the reservation but I think it's very possible.

Disneyland Forward has the potential to be another revolutionary event in the history of the mothership. May they spend as much on creativity as they do on parking! If they lay another dud like they did when DCA debuted it would be catastrophic, indicate that they haven’t learned their lessons, and that the spreadsheet folks and not the creative team is in charge. That would be a sad day that I hope never comes. But yes, it all starts with parking and a new front door that leads to 3 parks, Downtown Disney and 3 resorts! And I predict a WestCoast Skyliner that connect the new parking garage, new park and the current Esplanade. Keep the killer videos coming Prof. Brickey!

Oh wow, I did not know they were planning to build that large of parking structure. I think that makes a 3rd gate almost certain if they are adding that many parking spaces. So the new structure will run the length of Disney along Harbor Blvd? What exactly was this land before?

Since one of the major sticking points with the eastern gateway project was the Harbor bridge, I wonder if the new plans will include better access to Harbor from the resort.

I am buying this idea more and more. The more I think about content like this, the more I lean into the idea that at some point, almost the whole northeast corner of DCA and the southeast corner of DL will eventually be made into something else. They've done basically nothing to that area of DCA in nearly 25 years - why? In a theme park where space is at an absolute premium, to the point where they are proposing to expand the existing park footprints into their existing hotel spaces, why not actually do something with that massive Hollywood space?

Hey Brickey! I saw you on the WDWNT podcast today. Well done. I’m glad you’re getting the additional exposure. Hopefully, it gets you additional subscribers. I love the channel. You have a unique look at the parks. The history of the parks that you narrate, are top notch and evokes strong emotional connections. You also aren’t scared to tell Disney management what they don’t want to hear. You use your voice when the rest of can only speak with our wallets. We didn’t renew this year and you told them why. Maybe I’ll run into you again the next time there’s an over crowded under planned Ahsoka signing with my daughter. Maybe at the next Celebration. We will be doing some Disney cruises until we feel the parks really want us back. Speaking of Disney Cruises, I think the ships could really use your perspective of going over the design of the DCL ships. Ever thought about doing a Disney cruise and doing that?

I might be mistaken but if i remember correctly during the meeting that gave them the approval from the commissioning department, they said the 1.9 billion needs to be spent within the first ten years. With that said, i remember them saying that the 1.9 billion has to be used for theme park experiences and capacity but can not be used for things like parking structures or infrastructure. Seems like multiple projects will most likely be done to be able to meet that ten year deadline

That is key: from the new parking structure/transportation hub how to you get trams and pedestrians over or under Harbor. With that you would need new park entries. What about getting to downtown Disney from there? especially if you do not have a park ticket. Also, from street level (like coming from a Harbor Hotel), how do you get in?
@deserthockeybreaks65493 ай бұрын
Hey Brickey!!! What would you prefer to have built in the transportation hub section, frozen land moana land something from another park not at disney yet or you got something else in your creative mind?

Could they add theme park space, hotels, etc. to the top of any of the Garages, including the new one? I heard of a mountain complex of hotels and entertainment district that had been planned for Walt Disney World, with parking under the mountain that everything else was on. Perhaps that idea could be revived for more landlocked Disneyland?
@jamesl11303 ай бұрын
I agree that a garage will be built 1st, however l feel the garage will be the NE corner of Ball and Harbor for cast member parking. It may turn out that both garages will be built at once. My dream is that not only will both garages be built at the same time, but the NE expansion of DCA will also be in progress.
@jamesl11303 ай бұрын
The freeway off/on ramps may take a bit of time to get done, as that will not be Disney connecting into the freeways. Other projects that may start are the road improvements on Ball and Katella, as well as the altering of Magic Way.
@jamesl11303 ай бұрын
The Garden Walk property is zoned for time share and Disney heavily emphasized DVC to the city council. There is one empty plot of land East of Garden Walk. In 2001, when DCA opened, there were 2 empty plots of land. Castmemers explained that Disney owned these 2 plots for hotels that they would allow other hotel operators to build upon and run; and that both hotels would be serviced by monorail.

Making a more efficient parking\transportation hub would be a great first step to expand Disneyland. Not something that will WOW people, but if you expand the parks first getting to the park will just become a larger nightmare given the current transportation layout.

I'm trying to figure out how guests from the hotels along the Harbor across from the parks will get in. Will they have an entrance between the Camelot Inn and the Tropicana, where guests will go through security in the garage and then cross over the Harbor on the (secure) bridge? Or will they maintain an entrance on the west side of the Harbor, mostly for the foot traffic from the hotels? As someone who will probably be staying at one of those hotels whenever I visit Disneyland (except for in 2026 when I'll probably be at the Hilton because that is where an event I expect to happen will be being held), knowing that they haven't made my walk to just get into the parks three or four times as long is important.
@HeyBrickey3 ай бұрын
Entrance through garage, cross secure bridge. It’s the only way I can think that it would work.
@gridley3 ай бұрын
I recall being annoyed when businesses along Harbor Blvd several years ago opposed the eastern parking structure because it would feed users straight over to the parks & bypass hotels & retailers on the street. However, I get why any business doesn't want to lose its customer base, but most of those customers were there to begin with because of "Disney," not "IHOP,," "Tony Roma's, "Castle Inn" or "7-11," etc. The only bad thing about the need for a huge multi-level parking structure is that it eats up a lot of money compared with raw developable land similar to the Toy Story lot---or former strawberry fields. I wonder if the current owner of GardenWalk would have competed as much for that property if they knew in the past what they know today. But if stores or shopping on Harbor Blvd is weak, there are developers of hotels who continue to sniff around for land in Anaheim. Also, if the Disney Co in the 2020s is facing greater economic-political headwinds, that won't help matters.
@timreed67183 ай бұрын

Obviously, Disney learned to play nice after stunning loses with its political battles in Anaheim and Florida. I have my doubts Disney will rush with its development plans, but I agree the first step is building the parking lot after years of delays due to unwillingness to play nice with Anaheim businesses, which could still happen although less likely today. Could there be 3 pedestrian bridges over Harbor Blvd? That would be great. They should consider an electric automated people mover to take guests from the West parking garage.
