hey
What is Korean Army Base Stew and how delicious is it? We traveled south an hour out of Seoul, to a city called Pyeongtaek, to try the best local army stew known as Budae Jjigae (부대찌개). On the way, we stopped at a the Eastern Social Welfare Society children's home to see what the money had been spent on, that you guys so generously donated in may of 2021.

Brilliant video as always Dan! What an amazing thing you all did to provide such an amazing space for those children. I work with children too, I'm a teaching assistant in a special needs school, so this was even more heartfelt for me. When the lady told you about how the building means the children can enjoy the outdoors more, that is so true and so important for young children's development to be able to access outdoor play no matter what the weather is like! I cannot tell you how much those kids will benefit from your generosity! Proud to be a subscriber on your channel and a patreon member, so well done! Also loved the army stew it looked delicious, they put spam in it right? It was made up of all the ingredients the soldiers had and they tried to make something more yummy and hearty with it all! Xx

i think i cried a little bit when i got home because i could see how much it meant to the kids and the people that worked there, and they showed us a photo of them using it on a night when it was all lit up! thanks for the support and yes it's made with the ingredients the soldiers had, that's why spam is a so widely loved in this country to this day.

@@PirateDan Osan main gate. Just outside the US Air Force Base main gate is where all the action is in songtan. Americanized street food, restaurants from all over the globe, nightlife, shopping, etc. you can get custom suits made, mink blankets, hand made pottery, brass metal collectibles, paintings, shoes, etc. Go there at night any you’re bound to meet Songtan Sally and the Juicy girls.

@@PirateDan she’s a legend. She’s not as active as she once was but she’s been around for 30-40 years. My family is from songtan, since the 1930s. My mom is one of 11 kids and they lived in a compound in songtan. She met my dad who was a GI and now I’m stuck in Texas. My uncle was an architect and built many buildings there, one of my aunts sold socks from a cart in front of the main gate. I lived there as a child in the early 80s. I remember playing on a sand playground and if you dug 2 feet deep, you would find bullets and stuff from the Korean War buried under the sand. I moved back to songtan after high school in the late 90s to work as a tour guide on the US Air Force base. I met my ex wife there and she wanted to move to the states, otherwise I’d still be there or Hannam dong which I also lived. Songtan back then was known as a tough town with tough guys. If you ever go back, I think the Osan AFB main gate would give you content for a great video. My aunt and uncle own an underground pottery shop. One of my uncles makes them, and my aunt sells them. They’ve had that shop since the 80s. My other Aunt owns a hair salon across the street from the bus terminal at n a corner from n the back alley way since the 70s. There was a night club called cockpit that was more alive than any bar, club, disco tec ive been to in Seoul. Not as fancy but the energy in there was unmatched. I took hapkido all my life, in songtan the floors were wood. Hapkido is locks and throws and it wasn’t fun but it made taking hapkido in the states easy. Thank you so much for the video! After the holidays, if you haven’t received your MacBook, I’ll will donate to make sure you get it. I’m fairly poor and trying to make up Christmas for my daughter from last year. But once that’s done, I want to help you to keep this channel going because it helps keep me going! Gracias-Thank you in Spanish

@@jt2475 i thoroughly enjoyed reading your story and imagining what Songtan used to look like and what the people did that work there for a living! Hapkido sounds like a mix between jiu-jitsu and judo! i will try make a trip back down there as i feel there's so much more to see! And i will have a hannam dong video uploaded by december!!! I really appreciate you support for my channel, it puts a smile on my face :)

The real story of army stew is back in the days, Korea was very poor. So the Koreans would go through the trash the GI’s threw and pull all the food out. Spam, hot dogs, hamburger meat, etc and boil it really hot to kill the germs.
@PirateDan
@PirateDan 2 жыл бұрын
ahhhh!! makes sense! is that why koreans LOVE spam so much. In England it's a poor mans meat and frowned upon, whereas here it's glorified!
goodbye korea, goodbye youtube
