At Last I have found a successful way for Smoothing PLA 3D Prints using an easily obtainable product. You simply apply this with a small paint brush, and allow it to dry.
📌Banggood 3D Printers bit.ly/2uJdFUU
📌Gearbest 3D Printers bit.ly/2pW50tf
No sanding is needed to achieve a near glass like PLA Smoothing with Good Results.
I will be testing this coating further to see how it reacts to Acrylic Paint, and Spray Painting.
Obviously the better quality your 3D print is, then the smaller amount of this coating will be needed.
P.S. I do believe I have found a really easy way to get a smooth surface coating for your PLA prints.

I've tried this method, but with less success, though I think it's because my current printer is incapable of a smaller layer height than .02mm due to the complete and utter lack of cooling as well as its crunchy sounding motors not really being up to snuff for the speeds I push them to. For anyone who isn't willing to go that highly detailed for the sake of smoothness, I will suggest smoothing with Bondo, then sealing with polyeurethane. Not only will this seal the part and make it smooth, but it should also make it much easier to do this with far larger prints. For example, if you're printing a new housing for your side view mirror.

My printer has already arrived. Yay! But i still haven't tried polyurethane, because The printer that I got wich is Ender 3 turned out to be pretty efficient at smoothing the layers in its lowest layer height. As I'm a miniature sculptor I'm always demanding the lowest layer height for my prints, and I didn't know but turns out it can do a good job in smoothing it by itself. But the information that I can rely on polyurethane for enhancing the models is very useful and I'm sureI'll come across the need in the future.

@GarryPurcell
@GarryPurcell 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that would work as expected. The Polyurethane fills in the small areas between the layers when applied thick, so thinning it so it can be air sprayed, would reduce its efficiency at filling gaps.
@freshpow21
@freshpow21 5 жыл бұрын
Garry Purcell thanks for the response! Yeah I can understand why that may be an issue folks worry about, but I don't think that's specific enough. True that it may be thinner, but the level of control with an airbrush is far beyond that of brushing or aerosol paints. So, based on your preference you increase or choke down the flow rate until you're dialed in perfectly for the application at hand. The only issue I foresee with airbrush is the polyurethane being too thick for use. Maybe there's a way to thin it like you always do with airbrush paint, while keeping the bonding properties intact. May still be worth a shot. 👍🏼

An epilogue to this - I've just tried a "no name" PU that I had lying around. It's meant for unfinished furniture in which case 2-3 coats are needed before an acceptable finish and level of protection is achieved... as a result (and probably due to it's "cheapness") it's very thin - ie the viscosity of the solution is very low. Coating - indeed dip coating - with this thin PU solution did not achieve the results shown in your video Garry... Certainly would not pass the fingernail test. I'm guessing that you got the results that you did because you used a floor finishing PU which would be of much higher viscosity and quality to the one that I used. I hope that this additional note is of help.

Thanks for the interesting video. Three questions: 1. As Estapol is solvent based, do you think the solvent is smoothing the 3D print, or is it just simply a layer over the top? 2. Did you try the Estapol Matt finish, as I’d imagine a matt finish would better disguise imperfections (less reflective than gloss)? 3. I’m guessing that once you have polyurethane coated (to smooth), then painting is not going to be an option?

Hi Greg 1. Estapol is an oil based product. Its an added layer filling in the gaps on the print. 2. I have only used the Gloss finish, so can't answer your question. 3. Painting over the Smooth finish is very easy. (I made a separate video It shows various paint coatings I tested) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6hpiKR0uJu0kqc.html

Thanks Garry. I’m so confused. :-) - The Wattyl website says Estapol is "A solvent based clear polyurethane” (goo.gl/dttT2E). - You say it’s Oil based (is that the same?). - Then my local Mitre10 says it’s Water base (goo.gl/vmRQCc) - But obviously not as they also say Turpentine cleanup! LOL So, I trusted the Wattyl website, and therefore thought “Solvent based” may mean there is also some reaction / softening of the PLA (to smooth it out a little)? But, I certainly understand that it is, in any case, also acting as a filler (similar to now a surface primer fills imperfections). I might give the Matt a go and see how that comes up. Also (I’m not knowledgeable on this stuff), but would the water base Estapol polyurethane variant (goo.gl/VMwvxQ) take to the PLA? If so, it would be easier cleanup and also presumably more compatible with applying acrylic paints?
@GarryPurcell
@GarryPurcell 6 жыл бұрын
Any Oil Based product uses Various Solvents to thin them. For Coating your Prints, think along the lines of a thick coat of Gloss Door and Trimming Paint, rather than a water based, thin wall paint. You'll get the idea. Make sure you allow time for the coats to dry, if you intend to do more than one. The finish I have achieved with the Polyurethane is good enough, that I can paint directly onto the coated PLA after 2 days drying, and without doing any sanding at all. Makes finishing a model easy. Iv'e also had no side effects (Warping or Softening) using Estapol Floor Grade Polyurethane to my prints. I'm not sure if Turpentine affects PLA, I might have a look into that when I get some time.

@GarryPurcell
@GarryPurcell 4 жыл бұрын
XTC is a two part epoxy resin, so once it's mixed you will discard what batch you didn't use. Polyurethane will remain usable in the tin until exposed to air, so once the tin is closed it will not go off. Polyurethane is a soft to touch finish, XTC is solid. Hope that helps.

@@GarryPurcell Thanks for responding, didn't like XTC, it was way too thick and covered up the details even after trying to thin it.
