The truth is, there are extremely few airplanes, boats, and cars, that are ever worth the money one has to put into them to restore them. One does it because one wants to. If the goal here is financial return, this is likely the wrong plane to work on given it needs a complete restoration as opposed to some serious fixes and she flies again. But, if the goal is "because", then go for it! I wish I were filthy rich as I'd fund the project, but, alas, I'm about the exact opposite! Hopefully the "miracle at the end" is the saving grace for this plane!

Totally agree, this is Jimmys World fan aircraft, we want it back in the air BECAUSE ... whatever the reason, the client is king, we want the 310 back in the air to do some good stuff for people in needs or veterans whatever even as a training aircraft for young pilots that they could rent the aircraft for a very good amount of money and you make a show about it. The plane was forgotten for so many years just like alot of veterans ... It's emotional more than financial here. Let's put that old bird in the air where she belongs!

Jon is perfectly correct, one doesn't restore a vehicle of any type to make money. I have an aging Jaguar that costs me money every month to keep on the road. I could have bought two new Fords (God forbid!) for the money this costs me each year, Why do I do it? Because I love it (and I love my wife, but she's cheaper to run!). So-oo, if you can't justify the cost of renovating it, then turn it into parts and try to recoup some of what you have spent on it.

As a proud owner of a 1965 310J, I would suggest you review trade a plane and controller again. Older 310's with lower time engines and three blade props, are somewhere between 100 and 125k. Only high time engines are at reduced prices around 70k. This is building your brand and reputation, and you will at least break even including the exposure and goodwill.

I’ve totally enjoyed watching you and your team work on this wonderful old airplane. I’m no financial wizard, but I understand enough about the numbers you crunched during the video to realize that attempting to restore the 310 is a no-win situation. I think you’d be better served by selling off the 310 and the Aztec, and using that money to finance something that will last a lifetime, something that would bring you joy while keeping you in comfortably in the black for the rest of your life (which will pass by faster than you think). I don’t know exactly what that would be in your world. Adventure is a good thing, futility is not. It will slowly siphon the life out of you. You’ve got me as a viewer for life. I trust that you’ll find something fun that’ll keep us entertained. You’ve got a talented crew in your corner. Good luck with your decision.

Jimmy, you know exactly what you need to do, buddy. It's ok those of us saying you need to save the 310, but we're not into it for 30, 40, 50,000 dollars, really needing to cut our losses and spend time and money on a financially viable and realistic project. It's not like the 310 is a classic warbird or an incredibly rare aircraft with some sort of cool provenance. DO what you got to do, fella. Your fans want you to keep producing awesome content and you can't do that if you're flat broke. We love you dude and we're behind you 110%

@@stoneshrink Yeah, I'll carry on watching Jimmy. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and take the sensible option of not throwing good money after bad. Very few of us were born into limitless wealth that allows us to pursue projects regardless of cost. Just as you have no time for "losers". @@ScarbadosSlim KZfaq is for entertainment. It is not, ever, to be mistaken for real life - what you say isn't wrong for real life, it is, however, a way to kill a channel. Add to this the premise that he was going to save the 310 - no matter what - and you have the beginnings of the problems that are to come.
@ScarbadosSlim
@ScarbadosSlim 2 жыл бұрын
@@stoneshrink I get your point that KZfaq is for entertainment, and you're right. To us this channel is something we click on for our own amusement. For Jimmy, it's a window into his own very real world. If he was like, for example, the Top Gear TV show, backed by some big production company with an almost inexhaustible budget he'd be able to ignore the obvious financial implications because it would be someone else's money he was spending. As he's said, he's already poured an obscene amount of his own money into this project and as sad as it obviously is, sometimes you just have to put your sensible trousers on, cut your losses and make the very difficult decision to admit defeat. I've had to do the same thing in the past with one or two old cars. The only thing in my favour is the fact I didn't let the toss of a coin decide what I was going to attempt. It was my decision to start and my decision to stop. Maybe it's because I don't come from a wealthy or even a reasonably well off background that I understand the value of not wasting money. To me, the figures he talks about are absolutely eye watering. I can't even begin comprehend those amounts of money being spent on frivolities like restoring a relatively unimportant aircraft. It just doesn't make sound business sense.
@stoneshrink
@stoneshrink 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScarbadosSlim This is simply restating what I said - so forgive me if it comes across in a bad manner. I'd completely agree with you except he took money from people to #savethe310. You and I both have cut losses - but we didn't (presuming, but feeling safe to do so) break our promise. That's the difference, to me, Did you ever watch Plane Savers? Twice now, he took on a task that he never would have finished without substantial help - help he didn't know he was going to get (or even aware that it was possible). He did that by not making promises. This could be that, but the first step is honesty and honestly, he's on the verge of losing something that may never come back.

I’ve flown a 310 just like yours. I loved it! I’ve flown barons, bonanzas, many other GA planes, DC-9’s, MD80’s, 727, 757, 767. I’ve only owned in 54 years flying, 2 planes. Old Cherokee six and now a 1947 35 v-tail bonanza. My two planes were just about turn-key. I can’t imagine all you’ve gone through with the 310, but you have so much more to do, and more deficiencies will be found. Bottom line: it’s a money pit. Part it out, and move on!!! As for the Aztec, if you think it’s an excellent airplane and an inexpensive candidate to get flying, make THAT one your project. Just my 2 cents worth…

Well Jimmy……. I was in your shoes with a 1959 Cessna 310-C thirty years ago. It was also a Florida a/c. I purchased it after it had been annualed. I flew it for a year and took it in to my mechanic for my first annual. I got the call that it had wing spar corrosion. I was beside myself. I don’t come from a family with a lot of money. A middle income family. I was lost. Just lost. I ended up speaking to an airline captain who asked me if I wanted to part it out or repair it. He asked me if I had learned how to read in my public education and college. He suggested that I buy an Illustrated Parts Catalog and a maintenance manual. I ended up getting a hangar and spending 4.5 years with an IA replacing the wing from Preferred Airparts, rebuilding an engine and an inspection. I did it when everyone asked me why? And I won’t tell you how many people doubted I could complete it and fly it again. Needless to say, after 4.5 years of love and work, I flew it again and went on to make a career as a pilot. Not easy. Not for everyone. But the people that helped me along the way are priceless. It’s all about your DNA. I couldn’t do it again today, however it was a priceless lesson on patience and learning. I did it. You can’t take it away. What a BEAUTIFUL airplane though. The C-310’s are delightful to fly. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You’re gifted in so many ways. You bring back years of great memories for me. Thank you. GOD Bless you. And GOD has a plan. Best wishes & continued success Jimmy!

I don't know that much about aircraft, being an old auto mechanic, but I hate to say how many automotive projects I started with high hopes, but eventually came to the point at which I just had to cut my losses and put my money and efforts into another vehicle with more promise, of which there are many. I have enjoyed your site for some time now, and you have inspired me and many others with a zeal for saving old airplanes. Don't stop now, but just re-direct your efforts into saving another aircraft that deserves to be flying again. I get my interest in airplanes from my time in the CAP in 1960-1962, in San Antonio, Texas, out of the old Brookes Air Force Base, flying gliders with an instructor, which was a real thrill for me at that time and still brings back great memories of flight. God bless and guide you in your decision.

As I get older I have found myself saying “I used to have” I have also had to sell things I wanted to keep to pay bills. There comes a point where there are no longer things that were once common, such as cars, boats, airplanes etc. By saving the 310 you are saving a beautiful part of history for the future. Saving it so others that may not have been born yet can be inspired and awed by history. Restoration is not normally done for to make a profit, they are a labor of love. Many of what were once the most common planes and massed produced have no flying examples left. Jimmy, please Save the 310

Holding off on the 310 is likely the best option, and I will still remain a fan. We've all experienced the same passion you had to see it become a success, but also learned valuable lessons along the way. When it comes time for any one of us to consider buying a plane, watching you helps us avoid re-inventing the wheel. We know more about what to look for, to not allow planes (or any vehicle) sit too long without regular maintenance and care, to have a good team of people of various expertise to inspect before buying. We learn that that owning a plane requires more attention than just a desire to just fly. Keep up the good work, and personalities! We love you, not just the planes! Can we get a Clear Prop!!

Jimmy, the information just in your run down on the costs incurred on the 310 so far is an education. Please share the spreadsheet if possible. The variety of things you touched on in this project is what made this so interesting. Anyway, live and learn, how about applying what you have learned so far to improve on your next project? Sparky, Grizzlie, Dr. Phil came together on this project, how about using that expertise and your experience (rot, corrosion, cutting planes apart etc.) on a new more feasible project. Okay Jimmy, here's my take on this - donate the whole aircraft to an A&P school. Take the tax write off, then concentrate, AFTER a thorough INSP, on the Aztec...IF it passes an insp, and is deemed financially viable, proceed doing the Aztec. Regarding the 310, as much as I would enjoy seeing you complete the project, it just doesn’t make much sense, not only from a financial perspective, but almost equally as the efficient use of time. I have watched all of the 310 videos and learned a ton. In fact if my current profession doesn’t pan out I’m sure after watching a few more videos that I will be able to take the AI exam. I agree with the vast majority of the viewers that the 310 is too far gone to restore. The corrosion is a huge concern as it will take an inordinate amount of time and money to repair. As much as I love watching you and your pals struggle with the hot mess that is Mighty Mouse, I think the writing is on the wall. If it's not viable, be it due to finances or time, then it's DOA. The ~$200k that would go into making her airworthy again can go toward getting other airplanes restored and back in the air. Hell for that price you could buy a 310 that's already airworthy, fly it home, and pimp it out in Jimmy style!

I have been watching and enjoying the 'Save the 310 series'. For me, the real question is, 'What will you do with the airplane when it's done?' You mentioned flying veterans or others to medical treatment. I love that idea, but with other's lives involved the aircraft will need to be perfect. Nothing would be worse than losing the 310 with others on board. If that is the goal, then this is not the right aircraft to start with. Find a solid airframe and start with that. You can recover enough $$ to get a really good start on your next restoration. So much good learning on this airplane. That's always the case. First car, first boat, first airplane. Then you know what NOT to buy. :-) Well done, but it's time to move past this aircraft.

Jimmy, As one of your other subscribers said, I also grew up watching Sky King and that is the reason I became a pilot and also an owner of a C310. I did contribute to your cause but I think this aircraft would serve the c310 world as a parts aircraft to keep other airworthy C310s flying. Thanks for your site and on to other projects. To you, your family and your crew, be well and stay safe!

Couple comments 1. I was flying a C model when an 8 inch piece of the rt prop departed. Ask me how bad an engine engine can shake out of it's mounts. The port engine literally was headed toward the cockpit when it was finally feathered. The prop mfg and the insurance fought over who got the rest of the prop/engine. 2. Part this thing out. Take your money and start a new doable project. We applaud your efforts! Love your channel. But Jimmy, give us something to work with!! LOL.... How bout an old Citabria. Learn acrobatics with a shiny rebuilt Simple ✈ airplane. You've got a great team!!! Give them some love, with a workable project...

I understand it's hard to walk away from this one, I like everyone else has enjoyed watching it. Sometimes you've gotta just cut your losses. I know you probably did this episode to show what a daunting and expensive project this would be to bring the 310 back, and you don't want to let any of us down, especially everyone who's donated money or time on the project. But unless you win the lottery or find a Daddy Warbucks to fund you, it''s alright to just walk away!

Jimmy, it would have been nice to see the 310 fly, then sell it to a flight school or a Caribbean island-hopping commuter. But after looking there bottom line, I think it's best to part it out or pass this project onto someone with bigger and deeper pockets for restoration. Be sure to recoup you investment into the 310 and apply those funds to the Aztec. 🤔🧐👍

I just wish I could be there to help with it but too old to do that now. I am an old (opterative word) Air Craft mechanic on both Piston engined and jet aircraft, My AFSC was Jet over two engines but being stationes at off shore bases( Both England and Germany) we did what ever the plane needed no matter what type it was.. I enjoyed my 5 years in the AF, met my wife of over 58 years. When I got out I went to work at a Pont dealership as a helper in the paint shop, after a few months moved to the body shop, did collision repair and later was body shop manager for a couple of years and left the dealer to open my own shop which I ran for 40 years. Still work in my shop but no customer work now only do work for family now. But facing a hip and two knees replacement so not doing much now. I have enjoyed all of your videos and have spent many evenings watching them. As for the 310 thats has to all be up to you. Good luck, Marvin Blair

Growing up, my favorite TV show was Sky King, with the Songbird and especially, Penny. Love the 310 as I do, it just doesn't make sense to spend upwards of $200k on a bird that might structurally, not be safe to fly. Sometimes you must listen to the brain and ignore the heart. Sad.

Hi Jimmy…. I am a huge fan, and i love your video’s. As much as i hate to see any airplane scrapped there comes a time when it becomes necessary. When you dedicate a show to trying to convince yourself to continue, then it becomes time to part her out and allow her to put other airplanes in the air. I couldn’t and wouldn’t blame you if you did. Keep the video’s coming, please

Done it myself several times but you gotta "know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em". Put your time, effort, and money into the Aztec. Might be different if this was your "forever" plane and you were going to fly the heck out of it to recoup the investment. Thanks for the content.
