Commercial A&P here, this is definitely my new favorite channel. That 310 looks like an absolute basket case, terrible idea for sure... which is exactly why you should do it. That is the kind of wild ride you can sell tickets too! I'll be waiting for the "Save the 310" t-shirts to hit the market so we can all help fund this bankruptcy in progress.

310s have become the disposable twins of the market place. It is cheaper to buy one with some life left in it, than fix them up. As Jimmy said $60 g's can buy something already in the air. There is some decent parts to sell here. I love the old 310s but you got to start with something working first. The engines looked like they were nicely pickled before it was parked, so there is likely some resale in engine parts there. Too bad about the props.

Great story. Save the 310. My father rebuilt a 1948 Stinson 108-3 many years ago. Was a disassembled wreak , turned out to be a fabulous airplane. Once you are done with the 310 it will be worth well north of 50k with everything checked out and documented. I chartered a 310 over Lake Michigan many times. Really nice and useful airplane.

Craig the costs in Aviation are absurd!! I'm in the midst of an engine overhaul and firewall forward upgrade. The plane is a Single Engine Cessna Cardinal. The IO390 Factory Overhaul cost me a little over $50,000. A new propeller was $15,000. All the other miscellaneous parts was $15,000. I haven't gotten the bill from the A&P yet so I don't have the labor costs.

The kid in me that used to watch Sky King wants to see the 310 fly again. I used to fly my dad's 1972 Cherokee Arrow back in the mid-70's, but had to give up flying when he sold it in 1977. I couldn't afford to fly back when 100LL was $0.86 a gallon. I certainly can't now..

Just about fell out of my chair when I saw "Priebe Prop Shop, Findlay OH". That's where I did almost all of my fixed wing training (private & commercial licenses, rotary & fixed wing). The prop work may have been done by Larry Priebe and/or his son Jim. Sadly the airfield they owned is gone, as is their business. Last time I talked to Jim (about 15 years ago) he was living in Florida. Great videos Jimmy!!

I love your enthusiasm to save old planes with your knowledge and how you fix these planes up for the veterans or handicapped people out there. I am an avid fan of your videos and find it funny when you admit you do not know what every part is but always seem to get to the state to clear prop and save most of the planes you get despite constant interference from the FFA stopping you with. One piece of paper. You amaze me on your methods to get these old planes airworthy. The FFA has to realize that if you think the plane wouldn’t fly you. Would risk your life for a video only! Keep on going and clear the props!😊😊❤❤

I was a USAF Security Police Security Specialist stationed at RAF Upper Heyford UK during the shut down, and went to work in Law Enforcement after our mission went away. While working LE, I had the opportunity to work over at RAF Bicester, and watched the RAF glider club take off & land there. They launched via winch attached to the bed of a Bedford truck, that pulled them aloft, then they'd drop the cable nearly over the truck.

Well like a thousand other people would like to see the 310 rebuilt..but have to agree its a lot of money...so my thought is if you have to do six months of paperwork and deal with the FAA why not make it experimental and do some thinking out of the box, like with the props etc. seems like there is a lot you could do like three-blade composite props, etc.

Corrosion can be a real headache. Will continue to follow your thread with interest. It has been a long time (1970's) since I flew a 1956 Cessna 310. The prop issue is a tough one as is the damage done by the mouse factory. Wiring looks rough but anything that old needs new wiring anyway. Yes, airplanes convert money to noise. Twins do it twice as fast....Looks like the Aztec is better than expected. Since you have the "Six" you are familiar with the IO-540 Lycoming.

Man, I'm glad you posted this... I was afraid she'd done away with you! Forget the 310. Yeah, it's lot more sexy than the Aztec but that Aztec will fly with anything you can close the doors on... and it will haul some ice. I was bringing one back (non-turbo) from the auction at Cape Girardeau many years ago and picked up a load of ice over what passes for the mountains out there. She never blinked... unlike me. Took about a day and a half (OK, probably 20 minutes on a real clock) before ATC could get me lower. All-in-all a good airplane to get your ME and fly your family around in.

I've been looking at the Aztec market, and it's a pricey one, but a healthy market. The aircraft themselves are greatly loved by their owners for its comfort and space. Nice big windows for great views, and it's an excellent IFR platform. There really isn't a modern equivalent. Is it impossible to store the 310 until such time as the Piper is sold on? I wouldn't advise you to fly it yourself, as I'm afraid that once you have, you won't want to let go. One thought is that agencies, like the FAA, don't want the hassle of dealing with older aircraft. They're happy putting up all kinds of roadblocks to restoration. It's much easier for them dealing with new aircraft.

@@fhturner3 Unfortunately, it's simply "because the FAA said so". There's an Airworthyness Directive (that's the "AD") on those things, meaning that there had been some kind of safety concern with them in the past, and they require special treatment that has to be signed off, for the plane to remain airworthy. Kind of ironic that the mouse poop isn't even the biggest deal on that plane -- it's bureaucracy. (but for a good reason, like, your plane not falling out of the sky)

For the 310 magnetos, Check the TCDS, note 13 for eligible magnetos. You can install slick 6310s and others. Education costs money. You can fix the 310 for less than my daughter spent at Columbia. (and she still needs a pilot certificate). Are the engines -Bs or -Ms. Easier to find -M props. Crankshaft dampeners are different. Maybe the crankshafts as well. It sure is hard to believe the Aztruck is more economically viable than the 310.

A possible source is MT Propellers at Canadian Propellor service in Winnipeg Saskatchewan. Seems to be the go to folks for props. In Canada too which means you get 20% dollar exchange. If swapping props anyways what about reversing scimitars?

Hi Jimmy, enjoy your stuff. Re the FAA certification you'll be fine, they certified the 737-max after all..

If you make a good offer, like 5k or something, they might do the prop inspection. Money moves. Patreon could work, offer some behind the scenes or a live stream on there.
