Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the iconic V-22 Osprey transport tiltrotor, is pitching a new tiltrotor platform to the United States military, and this one would be unmanned. A drone version of the V-22 could help deliver supplies to ships and bases far-flung throughout the Pacific.

Well if they replace the rotor with a jet engine it will be a economical problem because USMC and Army will require many of this aircraft so Operating and maintaining it for a long time will be very Expensive. So i think for now the rotors are good enough

no to mention physics. something about the way jet engines create their thrust (a lot in a small area) makes it not suitable to sustain hover flight. Yes the german tried this and didn't find it particularly useful.

@@ll-cm5jt .....They would use too much fuel for that. But the turboprops use small jet engines to power the props. It comes down to being able to balance fuel consumption range and payload. All of those would be less with large jet engines.

I believe a multiple rotor electric vtol to be the future. Multiple rotor wings as the entire wing pivots. Maintenance is easy compared to the mechanical requirement to balance and tune a dual rotor. If one rotor is damaged in battle its out of service. By comparison to multiple electric if one or two are damaged the plane can continue. Pilot less just as the support one displayed.

The problem with these kind of aircraft - is that they are incredibly loud. I lived in Jacksonville, NC for a year and the Ospreys were amazing at shaking my house to the point I thought windows would fall out. I like Sikorsky's S-97 Skyraider for the Army a lot better.

they sould make a V-22 with boat bottom so it can approach a coast within miles before taking off. the plane would come with a detachable saddle that would dold gas so it could come from 100s of miles out without using any of its own fuel!!

the Indian Navy should acquire a fleet of 100 - 130 brand new MV-22E Sea Osprey tiltrotor for ASW support & CSAR!!! can also opt for some of the V-280 Valor tiltrotor which can serve as carrier onboard delivery & armed gunship all rolled into one aircraft!!!

First of all most concepts for future airframes never get beyond the model level. Because of the cost feasibility studies nix them, which what should have happened to both the tiltroter and JSF. Because the cost feasibility studies were likely ignored. Remember how long it took to make the Y-22 into reality and the massive cost in R&D as well as the JSF program. By the way the JSF was essentially a no bid contract for which Boeing never really had a chance. Neither program has benefitted the military as much as promised. There is also a direct corellation between out of control defense spending, government gone insane, and high deficits across the board.

No. It will depart controlled flight and those aboard are unlikely to survive. This is especially so in the Pacific where temperatures and humidity are high (thus degrading one-engine-out performance) and rescuers are beyond the range of a reliable helicopter. The good news is, the executives and PR officers at Bell Helicopter will still be paid. So that's OK.

Adapting the MV-22 to modular air 2 air refueling and maybe AWACs aircraft is a desperate need. The F-35 b has a good deal less range than the A and C models while carrying less armament. The big deck carriers also don't have a practical refueling aircraft at the moment. This has to be fixed and it will take years before the drone tanker will be ready if ever. With a normal complement of 6 F35b's you can only practically sortie two for mission tasking two buddy tankers and two down for maintenance which takes a hell of alot longer on a gen.5 jet at sea. So they really can't operate without a big deck with tankers. Thus the VSTOL part of the project will be billions shit down the drain.

(1) that varies widely with weather conditions and the distance from launch platform to the target. (2) if it comes under attack while airborne, those aboard are unlikely to survive. There are far too many single points of failure to make a tilt rotor survivable against even WWII AA guns, never mind modern missiles. If any of the single points of failure are hit, the aircraft will depart controlled flight and controlled recovery will not be possible. It MUST be kept beyond the range of hostile anti-aircraft weapons.

Too bad Pierre Trudeau cancelled the Canadair CL 84 Dyavant twin engine turbo shaft tilt wing take off like helicopter and fly like an airplane aircraft. It even operated off the USS Gram in 1972 but the US navy lost interest in sea control ships or VSTOL carriers so dooming the CL 84. Which could have perform , ASW, bomber, gunship, medivac and transport for US marines and Canadian armed forces.

I know pilots seem to like the V-22. But from a casual spectator, this concept is ludicrous, with way too many moving parts with way too much stress across the aircraft. These things crashed ninety-to-nothing when they first came out. Had to be a reason.

Given the Osprey's failure record (to say nothing of its ridiculous cost over-runs) and its propensity for killing its crew, I don't think I'd want to join the Marines.
