I'm glad that you are teaching your son to appreciate the ins and outs of knives as tools. A lot of younger ppl these days are being taught that knives are bad and scary and only carried by bad ppl looking to cause trouble.

I'm in the same camp as your son. I know it may not be excellent value for the money, but I think its excellent in all other aspects. Really nice looking knife with crazy smooth action. Insane how thin they got that blade. Its great if your looking for an ultralightweight edc for light duty tasks. I got the black one and plan on getting the purple later. Only 2 complaints are its not grippy as I would like and the other colors are not my cup of tea.

Thanks Aaron! Another good review with honest pros & cons. That's why we watch yours. So 154CM isn't the trendiest steel ... no biggie. It's still good stuff, and WAS the hot steel when it came out. I've not been a fan of that wrap-over pocket clip since the SOG Terminus, but this one looks thinner, so won't get stuck on the pocket top seam. Not going to give up my Bugout, but this one looks good, too. Hmmmm .....

Great video and review. Sognis really killing it lately. I have the Vision XR LTE, Terminus XR LTE and the Pentagon XR. Super impressed with all of them. The Vision actually finds more picket timw than my trusty custom PM2. My ultra lightweight carry has been the Hogue Deka Magnacut. But i definitley need to take a look at the Altair.

i try to stay away from any type of plastic items for the out door us ,but a plastic knife handle doesn't stay in the sun, but to me it still sidnals to me there are going to be problems down the road of some kind . I do not beleave these knives will be around funtioning to be hand me downs in 40 years . Just some thoughts from an 81 year old . At my age I still have my dads and granddads knives and hatchets plus cooking gear . This items were handed down last year to the young ones and hopefully will be handed down when there done with them . The only thing that is not old is one of the sheaths the dog remodeled it so I made a new one but did keep the sheath the only item not handed down is the knife my dad made for me when I was around 8 or 9 . I really enjoy your reviews and vieo's keep up the outstanding work Happy Trails

I just bought the Altair today on a whim. I spotted it on clearance at a local knife shop for $100 Canadian (for context our dollar is about 30% lower than USD). At that price I was really impressed. It's XR lock is miles better than the one on my Sog Terminus XR - that almost sold me on it when I first picked it up. But then its generous handle length, lack of scale flex and that thin full flat ground blade put me over the top. 154cm doesn't excite me, but I figure design is more important than blade material. One complaint: the pocket clip has a sharp edge that bites into my palm when I flip it open. Im going to have to round it over, but then I'll lose the nice grey coating...

Slight rant because I'm little pissed at SOG! Some times I just don't get this knife makers decisions. They make the PowerPint and on papper it is the greatest compact MT ever made then I get it in hand and get to find out it has $15.00 Sabenza counterfeit from alibaba level of QC. Then they take the GOAT aka the SOG Aegis, one of my favorite edc knives of all times and they turn it into a pig! Its like someone said "Hey sense the Bugout is so popular we're going to take our closest competitor to it, the Aegis, and we'll do the exact opposite of what everyone like about the Bugout first we'll discontinue the original design completely and then take it's name and basic profile and add 2 oz worth of steel liners then we'll take the unnecessary but tolerable and out of the way safety and move it into a spot right under the palm swell on the back of the handle so it is as annoying as possible and then we'll add the dumbest lanard loop in the history of folding knives because 1 in a hundred people want to add a lanyard to their knife for the Instagram and the old blade to handle ratio on the old design was too good" Litterally all they had to do was take the exact Aegis line (the multi-cam, the leaf blade and tanto, and especially the mini) delete the assisted opening, upgrade the blade steel and add an Axis lock! That's it! Nothing else and they would have had a home run! They maybe could thin out the blade a little if they want to shred a little weight down for a little extra credit but it still would have been light enough to complete! And then there is the Altair! A knife that would have been entirely unnecessary if they had just done the right changes to the Aegis but yeah the design looks pretty good! But then it like someone came in after the weekend the light bulb shining dim and said "So it was my kid's birthday party this week and our dog stole and ate the colorful vanilla cake but look at the amazing colors he pooped out! Aren't these perfect for the new Altair?" And then everyone was like "yup birthday cake dog s&%@ is the perfect color scheme for our new knife let's do it!" I mean WTF SOG! Seriously answer the question wtf?

This review really concerned me, I just received my Sog Altair based on this video and I got to tell you, I find it to be a piece of junk, plastic thumb stud, plastic crossbar lock, the centering was horrible, it just felt fake in the hand and for some reason, when you pull the lock back and the knife closes the blade won't close all the way unless you let go of the crossbar. This guy knows knives, I've been watching him for years and to give this a thumbs-up surprises me. And for $125!?!? Maybe $25.
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical Жыл бұрын
I am sorry, sounds like you got a bad one. As I said, this is very light and all these knives feel very cheap at this weight. The cross bar is not plastic to my knowledge. These studs are a polymer and so are the engagement points as I stated in the video. And as I stated it is expensive for what you get but having owned the bug out this is surprisingly close in fell and design. If you are not happy return it asap!

@@gideonstactical thank you for the kind words and understanding, don't remember if I ever saw you do a review on the Hogue Deka , but for the same price, with magna cut steel, perfect centering and a little thicker which felt better in the hand for me, again I just thought it was a better option. And yes, with such a small and lightweight knife and close tolerances I could have gotten a bad one because the centering was horrible and the blade did rub against the side. And another good option for half the money was the Kershaw Covalent, I really liked that one as well. Thank you for the great work and please keep the videos coming, we all look forward to them.

It weighs only 2.4 oz and will be released today June 2 @ 11am from DLT Trading. It looks like a real winner, except for the $500+ price tag. Spyderco is overpriced, but I buy them. Benchmade is way overpriced but I still have a Bugout (not worth what it costs). Everytime I see something from SOG I like it's about as much money as a Spyderco but with lower quality blade steel, so I've never bought one. @@johnj.baranski6553 I think that heat treat and ergonomics are two of the biggest reasons for Spyderco popularity and why the prices are justified. They are at the top of the heap when it comes to quality of heat treat for production knives. Their designs are very comfortable and quite capable. If you are looking for a cutting tool you will use often, it’s worth checking out Spyderco folders. If you are just looking for aesthetics, lines on a spec sheet, and fidget factor - go with one of the budget priced Chinese makers. To be clear - the Chinese budget brands that dominate the market are capable of a quality heat treat. They do simple ingot steels reasonably well. Things like 9cr, n690, and 154cm should be fine from them. When it comes to steels like s35vn, m390, and other higher end knife steels - they are often run soft enough that you are wasting money and good steel. Though that seems to be changing. A buddy does a fair bit of testing and has noticed that some brands (like bestech) are starting to run m390 in a hardness range where you start to experience why m390 is so highly regarded.

I'm far from a Benchmade fan but SOG is far from "killing" anything

A couple years ago, maybe. They were on the right track. But under current ownership and terrible customer service, I agree with you

I've had my Alt-air since January, and I love it. It is outstanding and blows the bugout away. So happy that other companies are hitting this segment... since Benchmade was exposed for betraying the gun community and is on the "ain't shit" list

I will never purchase another SOG after the total disappointment that is my SOG Terminus. It is hands down the worst knife in my collection, despite costing me over $100 (for the gold anodized model.) The action is lame, despite giving it a full tune up. The carbon fiber feels like cheap plastic, despite me sanding down all the rough edges. The flipper tab was SUPER sharp and I had to file it down so it wouldn't tear my skin and my clothes. Simply put: completely unacceptable for a knife of that price.
