This Could've Been Expensive

We got a call for an Earthroamer that had slid off the road at Cathedral Mountain Overlook in Capitol Reef State Park. They said a local tow company had turned down helping them so we loaded up both wreckers and headed out. Once we got on-site we had to assess the situation on how to rig everything using what we brought and what was available in the area. Everyone assumes that just cuz a tree is nearby you can winch to it. Sometimes that is true but in the desert where the roots don't go deep it isn't always that easy. We did make some mistakes in this recovery but we dealt with them as they came. We were able to get them out of a bad situation and back on their way. So after being contacted directly by Earthroamer (super nice people by the way) we have been corrected on weight. This vehicle full of fuel weighs 18,000 lbs. I apologize, it was not my intent to mislead anyone for clicks, I just went with what the customer had told me. Thank you everyone.

Good point, it might leave Earthroamers fully equipped with extras with that kind of weight, but then people add more batteries, more solar, heavy utilities and a few more canisters and its probably closer to what the customer stated….

@@0kn0wwhat That's 5000lbs of party supplies! For the average good size truck camper, one usually ballparks a thousand lbs when fully packed, ready to go. I could maybe see a rig like that loading up 2000lbs and change, if he's got some big-ass fresh tanks, a motor bike and a hell of a big meat freezer and beer fridge. But 5k lbs seems a bit much. Regardless, heck of a rig. Perhaps toss in a couple hundred lbs of brown weight in his shorts hanging off the road like that! LOL!!!!!

Does anyone else think the slow-mo mistake was a happy accident? This was an incredibly challenging recovery and having Rory do narration on top of the video was a really valuable bonus. I have learned so much from you guys. Thanks again for some of the best content on YT.

Just before the winch line broke I was thinking “if this was on network tv there would be dramatic music and kettle drums playing as they broke for commercial for ten minutes. Then when the show started again they would recap all that had happened since the last commercial. Then the narrator would try to build up the drama. “ so then the line snaps but we didn’t need any fake drama or commercials this was for real. I appreciate the way you showed this recovery. So much more enjoyable than fake drama of network tv.

Thats not a 'milloin dollar camper'. That's a camper based on an ordinary truck built with ordinary materials and workmanship being sold for one million dollars. There is good reason these are not sold in any significant numbers outside of the USA. There are far superior constructed campers based on modern, efficient and globally sold vehicle platforms out there for the rest of the world . . .

Man, that is one lucky dude. First off, he is lucky enough to afford that rig. Secondly, I don't know what stopped that from going over. That for sure would have been a total right off. However, he gets to carry on with day like nothing happened. You guys are great.

Was an overhead crane operator for many years. Props for slowing down, actually reading the WLL for your rigging/considering the application i.e. choker, basket, etc. You had a learning experience with the winch line that you will apply to your next technical recovery. Learning and improving are things you should never apologize for. I learn from watching your channel-thank you.

Having a winch line snap like that can be so dangerous. You had redundant rigging and used static, not dynamic straps so no huge amount of stored energy released when it snapped. It is easy to second guess someone when not there. Unexpected things happen, your experience and real world knowledge saved that rescue. Nice job!

I know your voice over comments were done in post but your step by step of what happened when and how was perfect! It made being along on this recovery extra special. Normally we see just what happens but getting what’s going on in your thought process and execution, good and bad, made a complete story. Great rigging job. Lots of potential problems but you got through it ok. As a retired tugboat captain, my experience with rigging is extensive and when I see such a well thought out approach to solving a big problem, I have to send my commendation.

So glad Justin was able to salvage the footage. Not a recovery I would want to miss. Thankfully thru expert rigging and redundancy the customer got to drive their very expensive RV home and everyone got to go home safely. Not one you will ever forget.

Proof you can never have too much equipment and know what it can do. Was there a weak link yes. But there were other areas that added the protection in case of failure. It looked like it was a well thought out plan and executed successfully. It was nice seeing Rory get a hug from a customer. Well deserved I might add. The whole team is a well oiled machine and the best in the biz. Nicely done Gentlemen. You all always bring it and make the others look like they are playing with Fisher-Price toys in their sand box.

The guy that noticed the frayed winch rope should have asked for a safety break to have the boss check the rope. Nobody ever gets questioned or looked at sideways over safety. It's always nice to see operators use multiple rigging points and know how to luff their block and tackle to gain pulling power. Well done 🤝🤝👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Rory/Team Trailmater, if the BMF title were a thing in off-road recovery as it is in the UFC, I am quite confident that you would be the reigning/undisputed/undefeated champion without a doubt. That was quite an impressive recovery, I'd put it in the top 5 sketchiest category, that ya'll were able to accomplish out there. I love how technical you are and even though self admittedly you make mistakes at times, it seems there is always different techniques and such that you find to get to the end goal....a safe recovery, everybody goes home how they showed up at the beginning of the day, and no damage to clients rigs!

I would've shoveled out the soil in front of the left rear tyres so that less initial stress is used to begin to pull it out. Aside from the frayed winch line that snapped, I guess the (other) back-up lines did their jobs. AWESOME RECOVERY ! 🤓😄

6:13 you would not believe how many people dont understand snatch blocks. Snatch blocks to give a DOUBLE weight reduction in line pull MUST move with the load. Thank you so much, Mater for showing that reality for everyone.

Yup. Otherwise all it does is change the direction of pull. Which is a perfectly valid use case, if you have to go around obstructions for example.

Before I got into off-roading I used to think these Earthroamers were the coolest thing. Now I know that beast has to cause constant stress and is very limiting. Frankly you dont need to take the entire house with you everywhere. You can live quite comfortably in something like a pop up camper in the bed of a truck.

It was good to see Rory and the team handle this recovery. The wrong recovery team may have tried hot dogging it and been hurt or lost the heavy truck the way things went. Rory's experience and instinct with the backing of the team really paid off on this recovery. Top Job guys. Excellent video. One of the best yet in mho. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

I have Yankum and I have Factor55 and I have this bow shackle and that soft shackle and that tool belt and this winch line and all the companies make great equipment. Even the best equipment needs a good operator. In this situation all the best of everything was used! Thanks for saving g those people and they appreciate you saving g their rig!

Another great recovery! Working in a machine shop, rigging heavy stuff, I like to use old firehose for softeners on my slings. A 2 or 3 foot piece might have saved that guys sling on his beast

I keep watching episodes and saving them to watch later with other people I want to impress with the beauty of the terrain and the insanity of the recoveries being done - my list of must-watch clips is getting unwieldy! This one was just NUTS...

Man, AWESOME JOB GUYS!!! I don’t know how that truck stayed on the hillside! Really liked the voiceover, I know you did it for other reasons but I think it added a lot to the video and understanding just how tough and dangerous it really was!!! That’s Why you guys do the jobs everyone else turned down!!!

Awesome, AWESOME job Rory/Mike/Shawn!! Working Load Limits and proper rigging is something that is severely lacking in the offroad industry IMO. Great to hear you guys talk about it.

Great recovery and good use of the equipment used. Showing the line breaking and the straps just basically falling was great. Great videoing all around.
