A critical ship review of the Cranberry Cruiser by Supa_Star on Space Engineers, the Cranberry is a rather compact hydrogen-ion hybrid cruiser with a simple living area as well as a basic production capability that is relatively agile for its class, some of the internals can be in better spots though

Placing thrusters on sub-grids means lots of compromises when using them. You will need in-game scripts to get the most out of them. Using a hinge or rotor to secure a large portion of your ship to the main-body means that you have one weak point for attachment. Even if you use magnetic plates to help, if that hinge gets taken out you lose control of anything in that nacelle.

I noticed that immediately on the walkaround. The angled thrusters are basically useless. Aside from looking good, this is an impractical build.

Having the engineering section at the front and the bridge at the back does increase survival time in a firefight, so it's not 100% a bad idea. Not sure I like that door in front of the survival kit though - I can see that door getting disabled in a firefight and trapping you behind the door when you re-spawn! :O The aesthetics of the ship are top notch though. Looks like something from The Expanse!

Yeah that's a good point c= kinda thought of that as well while I was editing the video, would be nicer if the things in there were less-critical components maybe u wu since the upsides of having buffer between control seat and the place where a ship might get shot the most might be undermined a little if the buffer is made out of somewhat critical stuff for the ship x3 And ye u wu I did mention the doors situation too but cut the bits out of the video because I don't want to make it sound too critical xD mostly for PCU reason though x3 but good point that might hinder access to or out of it as well if the door is damaged c= Also yeah u wu the creator did a really good job with aesthetic design of the ship x3 ♥ xD a lot of people seem to think it looks Expanse-ish, I can kinda see it too now x3

Looks like a baby Battlestar in the thumbnail. Definitely looked more like something from the Expanse when it was vertical in the air column. Half expected the decks to be stacked like a tower inside.

Looks good but I’d slap some ai blocks on it and use it as a point defense escort or reduce some parts to make it a “leave the moon” ship

I disagree with the emphasis on the upwards thrust. Especially if you have a forward firing ship. What you need is constant acceleration to avoid incoming projectiles, and the best way to do that is to orbit your target. Orbiting requires a force constantly pointing to the origin (your target) and if you have a forward firing ship, that can only be done with main thrusters. Have you played Elite Dangerous? Cold orbiting with Flight Assist off (similar to Dampeners off) is an elegant maneuver there :)

You can orbit vertically or horizontally. So it can still orbit with upward thrust

@@Jeremy9697 Orbiting requires you to have a constant inwards force that is perpendicular to your velocity and points to the origin. If you have a forward firing ship looking inwards, and you apply upwards (tangential) thrust, that's gonna increase your orbiting velocity and the radius of your orbit.

@Raugharr ...... not if you are turning towards your target. Which no matter what you are doing to maintain orbiting a target, you will require some axis on the gyroscope to rotate to maintain the front of the ship facing target.

@@Jeremy9697 That's not how physics works. If you apply tangential acceleration (burning upwards thrust while your ships is pointing inwards) then your orbiting velocity will increase, and your ship will try to tear away from your origin. you need something that keeps you on your trajectory. Imagine spinning a rock on a rope. the faster you spin it the harder it will tug on the rope. The rope is what exerts the inwards pointing force that keeps the rock "orbiting" your hand.

This screams "small escort craft" more than full cruiser to me. It looks like it was meant to be just light enough that it could hypothetically dock with a dedicated carrier for long periods of time before a larger battle, meaning it's lack of production or dedicated fuel supplies could be mitigated. A role it looks like it could be ok at is dettering enemy flank attacks against it's carrier by engaging destroyers or corvettes going after the carrier itself or its fighters, or if that isn't needed for baby sitting the carrier, move up and support the actual cruisers and battleships in a push. Both options would up its survivability further as it would either be in the back only punching at its weight class or only attacking while the enemy is tied up fighting the bigger, more armored and armed ships of the fleet, allowing it to strike from another angle before slipping away again.
