The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

15 күн бұрын

The Chinese words for “520” sound very like Wo Ai Ni, the Chinese words for “I love you.” And thus May 20 has become an unofficial “Internet Valentine's Day” in China. May 20 has a very different meaning in the tiny unincorporated town of Codell Kansas, where May 20 is “Cyclone day,” commemorating the day on which tornadoes struck the town in three consecutive years from 1916 - 1918. Clearly there are a variety of reasons that May 20 is a date in history that deserves to be remembered.

Some viewers have been confused by the conclusion. The meteor passed on May 20, but was not identified until after it passed, and not reported until a month later on June 20.

Anyone else worried about the day THG retires. The enthusiasm, the little smile he gives towards the end of each episode, and of course the history itself. That will most definitely not be forgotten

I’m not too worried about that. He’s only 3 years older than me, but he loves his job WAY more than I like my job. His son has n eye and ear for history as well, so maybe it would be like a Paul Harvey situation when Paul’s son took the helm from time to time. 👍

11:10 Notice the crotch rivet. Levi Strauss started getting complaints over the placement. Seems that cowboys crouching by the campfire were suddenly being overwarmed in a very delicate part of their anatomy. The crotch rivets were discontinued.

1893, in the scheme of time, it's not that far from my birth year, 1958. I became a mere mortal when they cut on my back and 2 total knee jobs. '97-03 was a bad run. They're so old we're just changing the tires (pads) instead of buying new wheels! Growing old, validation, it's not for sissies and you reap what you sew. Thx THG, great job, as is typical!

I just went on Google Earth to check out Codell, Kansas. They have an interesting Cyclone Day Memorial. What I found very interesting was the street view. I haven't come across a street view where it was actively raining but it certainly is on the street view there. When I got to 407 Codell St. (it comes up as Plainville, Kansas) it appears that there may be a tornado in the distance, just to the left of center. If you "move" up and down Codell St., it was definitely imaged during a storm.

On May 20, 1975, the Buffalo Sabres reduced the Philadelphia Flyers' lead in the Stanley Cup finals to 2 games to 1 with a 5-4 overtime win at War Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo in a game that started with a bat flying around in the arena and ended with the players skating around after every stoppage in play in attempts to get rid of the fog clouding the ice, the result of playing hockey in 80+ F. temperatures. Philadelphia goalie Bernie Parent said that he lost Rene Robert's winning shot in the fog at 18:56 of overtime. On May 20, 1979, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Edmonton Oilers 7-3 at Winnipeg Arena to win the Avco World Trophy finals 4 games to 2 in the last game ever played in the 7-year history of the World Hockey Association. Dave Semenko of the Oilers, best known for his fighting ability, scored the WHA's last goal.

I lived in Kansas City Missouri in the 1970s not far from the path of the Ruskin Heights tornado. There was a former neighborhood of just streets and driveways where all the houses had been bulldozed. One of the last buildings hit by the tornado was Ruskin High School. Several students were killed and many injured. In the lobby of the school were photos of the damage. In one of the photos was the remnants of the name of the school. The only letters left on the building were RUIN. The school district took us over when we were in 2nd or 3rd grade to show us why tornado drills were necessary. Nobody in that area messed around when the watches were announced.
