I have changed over to POE (power over ethernet) when I added more cameras since even most wireless cameras need power run anyway. Much easier to run an ethernet cable. My POE switch and computer server are both hard wired to router. I then also have a UPS that everything plugs into, so if power was cut it still works for about 25 mins.

My advice: blot out the light with some color matching epoxy and put a MicroSD card in if it has a slot. Also consider getting wired cameras. Yeah, they're not full proof either but better than wireless. Especially when using shielded cable (EMP type jammers can disable them while the batteries last, and have a better chance of succeeding if the cable's not shielded).

For those who can only use WiFi cameras and can't hardwire it.. I suggest getting cameras where you can store footage on a local MICRO SD card. It's the very last resort of having some video recording unless someone rips off the camera from your wall. Get the highest Micro SD card capacity the camera allows so you can save as much footage as possible even if the wifi is down. But if you have a power outage, that's another issue. Those hip trendy cameras seem to only save video to the cloud and that requires Wifi, let alone a friggin subscription. Get one that has a Sd slot!

I literally watched the surveillance video of a guy with no face coverings of any kind just walk up to my bike which was locked to a bike rack at a public transit station in the middle of a large city, pick up my bike, twist it around, and pop the lock off and walk away with my bike. The transit cop showed me the video, and told me flat out that there was no way they would ever find my bike or the guy that stole it. Security cameras are useless. They don’t stop people from committing crimes, and they rarely help you catch someone who commits a crime against you.

"what's scary" is that people think Wifi is robust enough for a security system. Wifi is EASILY interfered with, this single proof-of-concept is just the latest of the ways to handle it. If you have a camera, and you want it to be more than decoration, then wire it in. Unfortunately I also understand how hard it is to wire in many of the cameras, in placed like apartments, for the places that HAVE to have wireless, it HAS to have local storage, or back to decoration status.

In the EU the CCTV immunity EMC standard EN50130-4 is legally required and would not be compliant with a WIFI connection. The signal could easily be jammed. Most wifi cameras should not be called "security" cameras, because they have not been tested to this standard and have used the generic EN55022 immunity standard, they are simply web cams or video monitors and should not be sold for security purposes, however many are and there is simply no policing, or noone really knows this is going on.

Mofi. Get a outdoor omni (cylinder) to pull the signal from outside. When in remote areas get a yagi (long triangle). You could just use the yagi but you will need to aim it toward the tower. I would recommend to mount it on the roof to get over sand dunes and what not. Certain elements/materials can cause imterference so try to mount it away from windows, metal and machines/motors. Make sure the Mofi is Verizon compatible but Verizon will cost a 100 more than Tmobile. Installing cell boosters I learned that Verizon gets the better of services but when you have a problem good luck. AT&T is better overall and their system has improved a major amount so maybe its better now. Customer service would be better though. might take a few people but at least they try. Verizon will charge you for figuring out your own problem. There are monthly services you can get that will allocate unlimited airtime (kinda) but one I have referred people to is Unlimittedville. There are others though. Hope that helps.

I've had a lot of problems with Wi-Fi in general, to the point that I am finding I don't like to leave Wi-Fi enabled on my home network at all. People are always trying to get onto it or mess with it somehow, and I've found it's better to just use Ethernet for everything unless the people where you live are all very honorable and don't like causing problems. It's not a problem for me to stick with Ethernet because I prefer using a laptop and a desktop, but I imagine people on tablets and phones won't want to hear that doing stuff wirelessly is bad for security overall. Their design is dependent on tech that I don't consider fit to use.

Companies making these cameras will wait until jammers become more commonplace and then offer an upgraded version, which will of course come at an additional cost. Even if it's as simple as a notification when the signal drops. Wireless cameras should be well hidden and used as a form of backup to the more visible wired ones. Anyone who lives in an old brick or stone house will know how temperamental wifi connections can be. My various consoles are in another room but not more than about 8m from the wifi router but due to a brick chimney and walls in between them wireless is spotty at best.

2:55 99% of wificams are 2.4ghz, so... Frankly I refuse to do wifi cams unless the customer can not afford hard wired and "needs" a solution. Wifi cams are the cheap route... but like many cheap routes there are multiple problems with them.
@techniciandirectautomation
@techniciandirectautomation Жыл бұрын
The use of 2.4GHz band isn't exclusively to keep costs down. Surveillance systems are typically spread out around the entire home, and using 2.4GHz band makes it easier to maintain a useful level of connectivity to devices without the use of wifi repeaters. 5GHz is for dense wide-open usage such as office spaces, as the larger bandwidth does not go through walls, floors, windows, etc. as easily. Further, it appears that these cameras did not have analytics set up properly. The amount of movement should have alerted the homeowner before the burglary.

The "known vulnerability" has been known by anyone who knows anything about radio long before WiFi even existed. that vulnerability is that any radio signals can easily be jammed! So don't rely on wireless anything for security. The only possible workaround is if your security equipment checks in with remote monitoring every 30 seconds or so and if more than two or three check ins are missed, it alerts whoever needs to be alerted.

Did you not watch the same video we all watched? He says specifically that this is *NOT* a jamming issue. It's a protocol issue with DEAUTH (De-auth) which is a protocol signal that you can send across a WiFi channel to tell all devices on that channel to de authorize the data connection. The WiFi is still there, the Radio Signal is still there. The SSID is still there and can be seen by all wifi devices...but you cannot connect because there is something on that channel broadcasting a deauth signal. This is a completely different attack vector than a known crude signal jammer. So your idea about 3 checkins? Like what? check to see that the device is still there? Sure...it's there...but unless you're doing some kind of handshake, your idea won't work...

Im more concerned with the implications this has with home security system ability to send signals to the monitoring station, especially when combined with a cell blocker. ( most modern alarm systems do not trigger an immediate call to police or the home owner when communications are severed. If anything a notification via the systems app) For those that don't know. The alarm could be triggered but it would not be able to alert emergency services.
@FakeJeep
@FakeJeep 2 жыл бұрын
Cell jammers are not that common... Keep in mind it's a FEDERAL offense to operate one. Granted criminals don't really care about that... it does make it a tad less common. What isn't illegal though and readily available is jamming of 300mghz devices with a fob by over saturating the frequency. Systems like Simplysafe[simplyunsafe] are easily susceptible to this, as well as many older alarm systems, but newer ones have measures to recognize jamming that will trip the alarm. Also with cell jamming many alarm panels also have wifi has backup now, so if they lose cell they can still communicate but this isn't 100%. There are still hundreds of thousands of people on 3g cards that are "dead" until upgraded.[ie anyone in Louisiana on 3g has an inert alarm panel because the towers literally were destroyed and replaced with 5g].

You can have the best security cam installed and still be useless. If a tech savvy criminal really wants to get in your home undetected they will. Already witnessed several instances where security systems were shutdown both WiFi and hard wired. Think your safe? Think again. There’s tech out there that can either completely shutdown your system or turn it into a zombie system(exactly how it sounds. Records everything as if everything is normal without showing criminals going through your window). Just happened last week in Oregon. Only reason they were caught was that a neighbor saw someone breaking in. Upon talking to the neighbor their hardwired systems never showed the break in.

In reality anything that works over WiFi can be hacked. That includes Alexa, all your IOT devices, lights, switches, thermostat, TV's, and some WiFi based security alarms. So if you want true reliability then, wired Ethernet is best. Also the old school DVR with camera's wired using video cable. While it was a pain to run Ethernet cable throughout my home it was worth it. My IOT devices (lights, Alexa, etc) are on a separate subnet , but the rest are secure by wired connections.
