They do need a firm hand and a lot of attention. But they are incredibly affectionate towards their owners. A true companion animal - keen to do everything with you. Such characters. Those who have them, are incredibly passionate about the breed and will tell you they are the absolute best.

Awesome breed! Had a wire for more than 10 years (he lived to be almost 16 as I adopted from a close friend at 5 years of age). Love of my life - until I met my future wife (LOL). A lot of what you say here is true, but I would add just how dang smart these guys are - more human-like than any breed I've ever been around. And also more independent than any other terrier I've seen. They don't really NEED you, Mr. or Ms. human owner, but they will bond, love, stick-with-you-through-thick-and-thin IF you prove your worth to them! The females are much more kissy-lovey-smoochy than the males (my male only kissed girls and women, never me or my male friends or relatives!) One word of advice - wires, particularly when they are under 5, are hellatious bundles of energy who need constant working out. If you don't provide the entertainment for them, they will create it - around your house, yard, farm, whatever. They are hilarious! And, yes, they can be stone-cold killers. I came out one night to find my sweet, loving wire with a baby squirrel in his mouth - neck snapped clean. We are about to get a new dog for our 5-year-old and it's hard not to go back to a wire - until I remember just how much work they can be. Definitely not for the no-maintenance lab crowd - wires are like having another human in the house - one that is loyal, friendly, energetic, super smart, and very independent! RIP Satellite...BDE!

Love my wire hair foxy! Everything you said is dead on. They will test your patience every now and then to say the least. But they are so worth it. Love their exciting personalities. And I can promise you that these dogs are absolute warriors. Let’s just say the rat I had in my backyard was dead before he knew what hit him. Foxies are the ultimate exterminators.

I have one Fox Terrier, he is currently sleeping on me. He loves to cuddle in the sofa. He is a city dog, yes he has a lot of energy, but he gets along with other dogs, people and kids. And he is my second fox, my first I got as a kid and he was amaZing, that’s the reason why I love the breed so much. Yes they need discipline all dogs need that. Also, my Foxie is a cuddle buddy and loves selfies… so yeah

I had a wire fox as a puppy with my ex and had him until he passed. With retrospect I was completely unprepared. I still feel guilty that I know my dog was trying his best with a partner that was not able to give him the attention and mental and physical exercise he needed. He was a beautiful loving dog with a fun and energetic disposition. He hardly barked but we lived in a less rural area and he was a flight risk due to lack of said exercise. He was patient with the cat I had previous to his addition and with other dogs he met. He adapted to the two kidlet additions but more tolerant than excited. We all loved him so much but again feel like he would have been living his best life with a more active household. My general message is make sure you do your research and be realistic with what you can offer in turn to the dog you want to get.

Hi from Italy! I have a fox (Ziggy, female) since 2 years. Let me tell you that everything that you say is true, except she is not afraid of strangers at all. what you forgot to say is that fox are terrific funny, a bomb of joy and sense of humor, and, when they want, so sticky cuddler!!!! it's the best dog for me, but it's true not for everybody: they need to stay open air let's say 2 hours per day to be happy dog and not hysteric!

Hi Chiara, I’m Italian too, I use to have a fox, the amount of happiness, enthusiasm for life, Cuddling and love of playing with their owner is Unique. If you are sad they will not Allowed you to be sad too long... their head and bottom nose will be on your lap: They are yes, independent, but they love Their family like no one! I miss mine terribly, I never wanted another dog after!

good honest review. nailed it. i've got a foxy. wants to kill everything. but he's trained so i can reel him in on command. wants to assert dominance on every dog he meets. willful. smart. active. definitely not an apartment dog. he goes with me everywhere, everyday. gets long walks EVERY DAY. that's the way it should be with a foxy. they'll bond with one person in the family and want to stick to them like glue. want to go the bathroom to do some paperwork? he's in there with you. want to tinker in the garage? he's in there with you. going to the shops to buy more toilet paper? he's coming with you. going to the pub to watch the rugby game? you guessed it, he's coming with. make sure to give them squeaky toys to murder and a big bone with marrow inside to work on. a great dog for a certain type of person.

My Wire Fox Terrier makes me laugh endlessly. He loves car rides. Not a swimmer. Cheats at agility. Due to my lack of dog training skills, he has fairly atrocious manners around guests to my home - he jumps on them, will steal food from their plate or hand, and demands to be petted constantly. Outdoors, I always have a stick or toy so when he comes at me with his teeth - all in play! - I can distract him with the object and protect myself from bruises (he doesn't usually break my skin!), protect my clothes from being torn. Failing that, a raised knee wards him off when he's bursting with joy and in full on play mode, but he circles me so fast, I spin myself to near collapse. He runs nearly all day every day barking and running the fence with the neighbors menagerie. He melts into me when we stretch out on the couch for a snooze. They're active throughout their lifespan. They were most popular dog back in early 1900's (1930's?) - see the Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy & William Powell & their dog Asta. This breed has won lots of first place awards in dog shows. Love my WFT! Nice post.

I’m not saying that you’re completely wrong about their temperament, but I do want to throw my two cents in. I currently have a 7 month old wire fox terrier, and he is the absolute best dog that I’ve ever had. He’s never had an issue with other dogs and he absolutely LOVES kids. He gets anxious when they start to get rough, but he’s never reacted aggressively. He’s the sweetest most loving dog I’ve ever met. That being said, I do agree that if you don’t have patience this is not the dog for you. It takes a lot of work to make sure that he isn’t destructive. My dog is VERY high energy. It takes at least two full hours of fast paced play to get him to a point where he’s not running back and forth like a maniac. Side note: He does love to sit with you and cuddle for long periods of time once his energy is down. He also for some reason enjoys chewing on your hand. Not sure why, it seems to be a comfort thing

I rescue fox terriers. I have had 7 so far. This guy is giving a bad impression. These dogs are great with kids. Go watch any other review other than this DB. WFT are not for newbies, but they are trainable and can live in a home with a LARGE yard and dog door. They are completely kind to all people. They will kill all small vermin. They bark at everyone coming in the house and once passed the door, they jump on any lap for love. If a person does not use treats and TONS of training, they are trouble. If you seriously keep treat training, they can do anything and WILL come back on command if you TRAIN for 6 MONTHS. I am a runner and a WFT needs running or tug of war for 30 minutes each day. They are all energy, but if you have a home full of kids, the dog will get worn out quickly. A good fenced yard is vital. They are not couch potatoes. Do not EVER get a fox terrier if you are lazy. They will chew up everything until they are 3 or 4 years old.

Totally agree with you Kelly, I have had smooth hair fox terriers for most of my life (just got another who is 5 months old), couldn't recommend a better breed for children, adults even other dogs they seem to mix easy with. I find the smooth hair fox terrier a very loving affectionate dog and as a plus also a very clean dog smell good to. Yes, they are very active and make you want to take them for a walk which is great for your own health. These dogs are super smart very alert, don't miss a trick and can easy get up to mischief, if you let them. Very trainable, however you need to be firm and have patience with them, that's all... The only negative their hair? they do shed?..no problems however, answer nothing that my trusty Dyson Vacuum can't fix.

I actually walk 2 fox terriers in NYC, mischief and kaos, one is 10 plus years old and the other is almost 2! Amazing owners, the foxies were lucky enough to have them as owners. The owners are so patients with them and are not afraid to take a chance on new adventures with them such ( pack walks, daycare, 2 hours of leash walks in Central Park ). Kaos is super sweet and gentle, so is mischief who is the youngest! Mischief plays tough and growls at other dogs here and there when he feels overwhelmed but nothing crazy. I guess there are exceptions in every case, maybe the breed itself is exactly what you have described in the video but my 2 friends are the best fox terriers 💯😬😁❤️

Mine didn't like children until a special little girl just would not believe my sweet guy might nip. She had confidence and she was right. He had years of history of suddenly nipping at children without warning but she made him love her and her siblings. I LOVE it that you are honest about WFT's. They're totally awesome BUT they're not labs. They're smart, independent, fiesty and never be off leash in the city because of their huge prey drive.

I've had WFT's my entire life (three of my own as an adult) and they are super intelligent. They do love to snuggle, and are very loving and protective with kids regardless of what others may say. This breed is not for the lazy dog owner...they are stubborn but loyal and have awesome personalities. They love a good challenge and want to be in the middle of anything going on. They are the most unique breed and do their best with like-minded owners...intelligent, loyal and loving.

My fox terrier is just amazing with our 2 year old granddaughter. He's very interested in her, mainly because she drops food for him. He's highly intelligent and very obedient. He is a great guard dog and thinks he's the size of a tiger. Bigger dogs are usually to be bullied by him. He learns routines very quickly and sometimes reminds me what happens next if I happen to stray. We've had a few fox terriers now and they've made the best pets ever. Yes they can be stubborn but with treat training, they are superb. They can live in cities, they fit in anywhere and are very good at adapting. You just have to make sure that they don't get out alone, because they are very inquisitive and will follow their nose without any thought of getting back home. Most of what this guys says is OK, but some of it just goes along with the myths that people who can't handle a fox terrier tell you.

I have a wire fox terrier in New York City (had prior experience with my parents' wire fox in Tennessee). He is very social and good with other dogs, but very true he needs a ton of stimulation and exercise. So they can be happy in a city, but you need the time and effort to take them to the park often and a lot of long walks.

Great idea to bring the dogs to you! Guest stars! My requests would be: Bedlington Terrier and Kerry Blue Terrier. I've owned both kinds. Pros and cons for KBT in my experience. (I've used positive reinforcement training for both). KBT - My favorite. It's also one of the last 100% headstrong and independent working terriers. They were bred to drag badgers out of their holes. They are very intelligent. Fast learners. And an appetite that won't quit! If all you have is an old, dusty food pellet - the KBT is gonna work it's ass off to earn it! Although no matter how obedient and pleasing they are at home, as soon as you leave the house they MIGHT run after any rabbit or mouse they smell and not return when you call. Their natural instincts are real so either use a very long leash or have a tracker on them, just to be safe. They are extremely strong and will pull on the leash if you're not very patient in teaching them otherwise. They bark when they hear the family car, when you come home, even more if someone's with you, if they want to play, whilst learning new tricks. Bark bark bark! Big con is they WILL bark and pull towards stranger dogs. No matter how obedient they are at home. When there's a dog, they tune you out 100%. Always. It's very frustrating. That alone would make an unprepared dog owner give it up to a new family.. They want to be in the forest, run endlessly, sniff, play hide and seek and in my experience (we had two when I was a child) they're great with kids and will not bite unless perhaps very provoked. They know who their family and friends are and they will show affection in the most special ways and in the most trying times. Very loyal and affectionate. Humans are their thing! Humans are their own kind 😌 Also I'm asthmatic and allergic to dogs. This breed worked fine for me. Although we tried to keep carpets, throw pillows and blankets to a minimum so it would be easier to clean the house and get all those invisible allergens off furnitures and floor. They don't shed. Lots of fur maintenance. Short note on the Bedlington Terrier. Absolutely hilarious and adorable. They look like rabbits or kangaroos when they move and jump (their way of getting your attention). Like the rumor says, they almost NEVER bark. Don't think they even, know they can. They're loyal to their family and will want to socialize all day long and not be left alone. But mine doesn't bark or "cry" when she's alone. She just goes to sleep. They love humans. They don't care for dogs. And they mostly just don't bother with them. So they're much easier on walks. Intelligent and will learn tricks, if they want to!! They might just not bother with that either. They're picky eaters which makes training especially difficult. I've learned that play can be a better reward. I will use a toy or ball to play fetch or chase with her for 10-20 seconds as a reward instead. Works very well. Fast learners, if motivated properly! Not as much hunting instinct as the KBT but still stubborn and independent enough to run off and not listen to you calling. They don't want to be too far away from family though, in the end. That's why I let this one off leash. It's in her own interest to not wander off too far. No shedding. Lots of maintenance. Also allergy friendly.

My siblings and I grew up with these clowns around. health: no issues until a few months leading to the end temperment: lots of personality, lots to say *kids: VERY playful and fun, WARNING will teach kids not to put fingers where they don't belong, we all figured that out the easy way but ... *they WILL pull shit: stealing food, sneaking out, running off, super noisy (singing/howling, barking), they will play "keep away" more readily than proper fetch *not an attack dog, more of a scouty escape artist than a damage dealing threat activity: having lots of people around, a big backyard, and time to regularly walk kept the bad behaviors like destroying stuff and acting nervous down - loved life up north in the back woods, always came back after running off on us chronically, just figure out what their currency is (certain treats or toys) training: they are ebil geniuses, if the time is put in they can be impressive and entertaining but if not they will walk you (not the other way), and they will understand exactly what you want from them but prefer their own ideas

My WFT is actually really good with little kids. He starts fights with every other dog in sight but he’s cool with little kids. WFTs are intense, willful, stubborn and independent but they’re also fiercely loyal, fearless and very, very intelligent. They are definitely not for everyone. My WFT turns 13 next month but he still thinks he’s 2. Still has tons of energy. I wouldn’t trade his 22 lbs of punk attitude for anything. He’s got more admirable qualities than most humans. Best friend I ever had. You want easy? Get a Labrador. You want a challenge? Get a WFT.

My wirehaired fox terrier, Zelda, has CECS or Spike’s disease. Totally gluten intolerant. It causes sudden leg cramps but if she doesn’t have gluten there’s no symptoms. (It was first only observed in border terriers but it’s being studied in other breeds currently.) She’s REALLY good with kids and actively seeks them out, but grew up in a house with three children so I think with early exposure they can be great family dogs. Loves tug! Obedient and always following us around and wants to be near you and touching you, loves belly rubs more than life, can still jump all the way to my shoulder at 10.5 years old. Always touching me but NOT cuddly. Like a cat. They wanna be ON you but not controlled by you, hahaha.

I used to breed and train Border Collies for cattle herding work and German Shepherds for police service...then I had a head on collision and needed a smaller dog...then I discovered Smooth fox terriers! Where have these dogs been all of my life??? They are SO much fun! But like Liam said, not great with small children (most dogs are not, and ALL need adult supervision when with strangers, strange dogs or small children) I have competed in barn hunt, agility, and obedience....I only started a few years ago...My 6 y.o male is getting ready to trial for his Open obedience title (CDX) and My 3 y.o girl is just starting. These dogs are smart, smart smart...but they DO have their own personalities...so expect the unexpected. I would never have another breed.

I have had 3 WHFT over my life time and so I can safely say i've seen it all when it comes to these dogs. I will probably always have a fox terrier through my life. I think their intelligence goes underrated, my second foxy, Oscar, we lost once on a walk in a field about 4 miles from our house, he bolted after another dog and completely lost trace. We asked around for an hour in the area then returned home when we were about to go put up "lost dog" posters in the local area. We opened the door to put them up and were completely mind-blown when Oscar was stood on our doorstep. The dog had walked 4 miles home on streets with cars either side of him.

Watching this video because a Fox Terrier attacked my dog and the person said it was just playing (which is wasn't), good to know that these dogs can be aggressive, will make sure to avoid them in the future, before my dog gets really hurt. Great video and thanks for the information!

Our fox terrier was fantastically loving to our family, a wonderful dog. But if you're small and furry they are death on legs. Her first adult year with us she killed around 150 pigeons, 30 rats and very close to 1 chihuahua - thankfully we got to her in time. Fox terriers do not piss about.

We had a fox terrier and named her mitzy and she was a nightmare as a puppy and for a couple of years as kept running off but luckily we kept finding and catching her but after a few years she knew where her home was and she never ran away again and she became a very loving dog and she had a very close bond with my dad and have many pictures she's sitting right next to him watching tv etc and she was an angel but unfortunately she got diagnosed with diabetes as she was feeling very unwell before that and she had her ups and downs along the way but 6 months after diagnosis it got too much for her and we had to let her go as was the vets advice as could of passed away during surgery and would of had to been in ICU and she did have hard life tbh but not when she was at home with us but omg it's been so hard and tough without her,she passed the rainbow bridge August 13th 2020,R.I.P MITZY 🌈❤

My wire fox is a lap lover, but had to be trained right out of the womb, but is awesome. My George was two champion parents, and he is perfect. He's a lover but needed to fight IS fearless. Socialization and training withe treats positive reinforcement, NOT YELLING, YANKING OR ANY OTHER training or household where screaming, fighting, and negativity not good. This is an excellent breed.

Mine just wants attention and PLAY time all day. Great Comedian! He LOVES jumping.. He loves PEOPLE and DOGs! He is not a killer. He GROWLS when he plays as this breed normaly does. He would NEVER intentionaly make an angry growl or harm anyone. He understands the rules but its hard to motive him to do the tricks. He isnt sensetive as other dogs, children can do whatever they want with him he loves it. But he can harm small children by being too strong and excited. He needs company 24/7 and as much RUNNING and Freedom as posible. He loves different odors.... bad odors .

Hi. Great video! 😊 I grew up with a foxterrier I was 5 years old when we got her and she was very good with me as a kid but my mom also teached me how to behave with her, very important not to push something on her always respect when the dog wants to leave or etc. But I just wanted to mension there is a hude difference between a wtf and wtf...now I have my second wft and her whole family tree was working-hunting dog on the other end my previous wft was from a family tree of shows dogs not hunting and there is deffinetly a big difference between them. A working dog is far more difficult 😆

ADD to the conversation, don’t attack. I’ve had my Wire Hair Fox, Yuki, for 5 years and he pretty much nailed my dogs personality! Just like raising humans, the kid, or dog has to be deadly with and cared for according to THEIR personality. It’s probably not a good idea to leave my as an ADHD 5 year old with 79 y/o grandma. There’s no judgement about that, but that lock and key probably go together!. If you work , do tasks, with your WHFT they are a super fun, loyal,, companion. IMHO, if you need to Google “alpha dog” then a WHFT isn’t for you. Like he said, this is NOT a good first dog! IMHO, and my experience with my two terriers, they need time outside every day. If mine get about 4 hours a day they are fine! Just taking them out to do their business and you’ll have behavior problems in short order. Both mine are rescues and it’s taken a good two years for them to give up some of their old personality and become part of my pack. If you’re energetic and always going then this breed will be ok for you. And add a line item in your monthly budget for chew toys. Yuki “kills” the sleeker in any toy in about 10 min. He still plays with the toy for a few weeks. Working Yuki with his ball makes him the happiest dog, and makes me happy because then, he’s a well mannered dog!

Hip dysphasia is slightly common among these guys. My WFT got it just a years months old. Just like any dog, the way you train them will depend on how they act. My WFT was introduced to kids and other dogs when he was very young, and as a result he is great with kids and other dogs.

Hi, they weren't bred to hunt foxes they were used to hunt foxes after being a popular farm dog. Anyway, they are trainable but you have to know how to train a dog and not wing it. They are fine with children that are supervised and taught how to treat animals as they should be. They don't run around killing everything. I have a large lizard that has lived outside my house for years now and my dog stepped on him accidentally after he got stuck in the small childrens' swimming pool. I let the lizard out of the pool and he was half drowned and my dog left him alone other than accidentally knocking him around with his paws. I put the lizard in the sunshine so it could warm up and dry out. He was fine after resting. My dog left him alone the entire time. Your review is kind of hard on this fun loving friendly breed of dog. I agree though that they don't want to lay around the house all day and be petted. They like to go out doors and they are self motivated indoors as well. They aren't good for any mean spirited behavior but they do give warnings more so than some breeds of dogs.

I can see the prey drive in my SMT, but he is amazing on leash at the age of three months, loves children and is very well behaved. He does have an independent streak, he'll lay at my feet or at my side, but he doesn't like to sit on my lap. I can see his protective disposition, as he does bark if he hears a person in the apartment hallway, but very rarely and he has never attempted to bolt at anyone or any thing. He's an amazing very well behaved puppy right out of the box with zero training.

Three pure bred wires, suburban Chicago. Yes, intense, but far from difficult. One hour walk and some attention is all they need- not a farm like an Australian cattle dog! Good humor, healthy, GREAT cuddlers (all three!). Not overly barky. Just need some attention and exercise. Also 2 of my 3 learned “true” fetch. They’d drop it and then we throw it. Not for the lazy nor the person whose only a caretaker 15 minutes a day (I KNOW people who buy dogs and only give them minutes a day- so misinformed and cruel) but other than that they ARE. very fun dogs

My dog is a Jack Russel cross fox terrier and a lot of what this guy said is true for me personally. My dog is very stubborn so I have to make sure I keep him controlled. He goes for two hour walks in our area (we live in the countryside) and half an hour later he’ll be ready to go hunting mice, rabbits or birds. He has hunted and killed plenty of times before, so believe me guys and gals if you have a pet rabbit, or bird or any small animal. Never let the dog near it because it will kill it. I have made that mistake once. He caught it by the throat and killed it. They are hunting dogs They are very protective, friendly with adults but unless they grow up with kids around them, the dog may be more cautious and likely to snap at the kid. From my own experience make sure you puppy train this dog asap. You do not want this dog to get into fights with other dogs and after they have grown up it is extremely difficult to get them to like dogs and not attack them because of how stubborn they can be. And my final point is illnesses, these types of dogs are prone to ear infections because of the shape of their ears and the bacteria, blood from any injuries or uncleared dirt can build up, make sure that you check inside the dogs ears (don’t poke your fingers in them that’s gross) just look at the ears, you will easily be able to smell (because even early stages of an infected ear smells horrible) or see if either of the dogs ears are infected. Take it to the vet if you suspect an ear infection. If you are ready to commit yourself to this kind of dog then go for it! They are an amazing beautiful breed that will be extremely loyal to you, need lots of exercise and will always find something to hunt and bring to you. But if you’re looking for a family pet that sits in an apartment or house for most of the day playing with kids. Then this dog isn’t for you.

Hi Liam I really like your videos, I’m looking to purchase a dog although I haven’t kept or have experience with dogs. Although, I like the American Staffordshire terrier, so will it be possible for you to do a review on it. Also, if you have any recommendations for first time dog breeds, someone suggested to me a whippet, but I have heard that whippets have high prey drive they chase cats and rabbits, lastly a suggestion from me, If you can also when reviewing dog breeds make video of taking them outside and walking them on leash and how they interact with people and animals would be very great. Otherwise excellent work, I’m a fan of your channel from Australia always waiting for your next uploads. Your review of these breeds shows your detailed knowledge regarding dogs as well as the humour you add, I once remember watching your review of the vizla dog breed and the dog he licked your cheek and you were like” wait I have seen you do something with that tongue before” I think I’m not exactly quoting what you said but I found it pretty funny😁😁😁😁😁 keep making these amazing reviews❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍 Love from Oz
