@farrex0
@farrex0 Жыл бұрын
@@shawnwolf5961 I am actually impressed, I have finally found one person that actually liked S8.... S8 is four seasons in one. S8 destroyed almost every single character arc... For example, Jamie Lanisters whole arc about becoming honorable, just to ditch everything and go back to Cersei. And then that one line "I never cared about the people, innocent or otherwise" That goes against everything his character stood for. Jon Snow, becoming a background character that just repeats two lines over and over "She's muh queen" "I don't want it". The whole build up for the winter and the Night King, just to be killed in the most anti-climatic way. Danaerys, comitting genocide for NO reason at all. Yeah, it was building up for her becoming evil. But even the most evil of characters, had a reason for doing things. She had already won, she had absolutely no reason to commit mass murder. Drogon destroying the throne, instead of killing Jon, the one who murdered her "mother". Danearys forgetting, that anti dragon weaponry exists. On the battle of Winterfell, Tyrion suggesting and being the one to send all the vulnerable people to hide on the crypts..... When the army of the death is attacking. Even Tyrion's actor said "Isn't he supposed to be smart?" when talking about that scene. Tyrion and Varys becoming the most idiotic characters ever. When they were supposed to be geniuses. Varys, the master of subtlety... openly talking about treason to everyone and then getting killed for it. Bran the most uninteresting character ever, after he became just a plank with o personality whatsoever, becoming king. After, he previously said he had no interest of becoming a lord. Jon Snow doing absolutely nothing, when he was ALWAYS a character of action. He could never stand aside and do nothing. He always followed his own moral compass, and suddenly he just becomes furniture. Cersei doing nothing whatsoever. The whole Winterfell battle, having no stakes whatsoever. Sure two of the best characters died there, Theon and Lady Mormont. Lady Mormont's death specially, is the best moment in the entire season. But what I mean, is that everyone else had extremely obvious plot armor. Several characters where surrounded by six or more nightwalkers, and somehow they survived. Samwell Tarly specially, he got surrounded by them twice, and he left unscathed. Danearys whole army getting killed by Winterfell battle, and then having a very small army for the Kings Landing battle, and suddenly, her army is multiplied. By the end of the battle, she has a bigger army than she ever had. Jon Snow and Tyrion somehow, not seeing Danearys turning evil. A whole entire episode, after the battle of King's Landing. Where almost no dialogue is ever said, and almost nothing happens. The whole episode, we are shown just people walking. I am trying really really hard to think about cool moments. The only thing I can think of, is Lady Mormont's death. That whole scene was EPIC, no doubt about it. But I am trying really really hard to think about good things, and I can really think of it. The visuals and cinematography were amazing! Aside form the Battle of Winterfell, which was one of the worst shot episodes in any show. You could see absolutely nothing. But everything else, was AMAZING. But aside from that, I put S8 as one of the worst things I have ever seen in my life... And I very rarely hate things. My list of things I, I would have a hard time thinking of a Top ten media I hate... and without hesitation I would put GOT season 8 in that list. Like feel free to tell me why you love it, because I can't genuinely think of a good reason why anyone would, aside from visuals and music.

On the question of why Rhaenyra wants to be Queen, this was answered in Episode 1 and Episode 5. Viserys told her it was her destiny and her responsibility because of Aegon’s prophecy of The Long Night. Viserys told her she had to step up. She didn’t really want it. In fact in Epsiode 2, she says he didn’t pick her; he (Viserys) spurned Daemon. When she was acting out in Episode 5, Viserys showed her the dagger with the prophecy engraved in it. That’s when she said she’ll step up. So saying she only wants to be Queen because she’s “greedy” and “entitled” is to deliberately and knowingly ignore the actual story happening in front of us.

Viserys doesn't know WHERE the prince that was promised comes from, could be Aegon ii or her, Aegon i only knows that is Targaryen, so Viserys tells her the prophecy cuz she will become his heir, BEFORE the birth of his first son. Also it's important to acknowledge that Aegon thought woman could not be rulers, so he would be biased towards Aegon II more than her.

There is no law of inheritance regarding dragons in the literary canon. They are free living creatures and are not passed down from parent to child like cars lol. It's first-come, first-served and at the end of the day, the dragon chooses it's rider. Can't blame Aemond for having the brass balls to bond the Vhagar by himself with no supervision.
@peaceandloveusa6656

Yeah, it was not a legal matter, but a social expectation. The girls were justifiably upset he did not allow her to have first crack at bonding with her late mother's dragon, but there is no rule saying he cannot be a jerk. Besides, in his defense, the funeral means she already had days or more to bond with the dragon and chose to mourn instead. After all, everyone had to travel there for the funeral even if the death was announced the same night it happened.

Yes, this is when the story really starts and things get SPICY. As Shad mentioned, the best part of the story is that you can relate to the motivations of all the major players. Rhae is "legally" justified, but is also breaking the law with illegitimate children that clearly don't "look" the part. Meanwhile, Alicent has a weak legal claim, but she is married to the King and has been a dutiful wife and mother to three kids that do "look" the part (i.e like "True Targaryens"). Yet, both sets of kids are essentially 1/2 Targ by blood one through the father, the other side the mother. Which is right???? We let the dragons decide!

Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, but her kids are not, they are bastards and because of that they have no right to the titles of their father or mother. Because of that Rhaenyra commits two crimes of high treason, first against her father and the realm, by holding information that should be disclosed to him, second against her brother and again against the realm, because her brother is her rightful heir, and later it would be against her kids with Daemon. Because she is commiting high treason and abusing her power Aegon has the right and even is morally obliged to rebel against her.

Interesting how Alicent killed the Strongs by accident (she didn't order or know about it) and Rhaenyra actually killed an innocent person on purpose. There is blood on both sides hands now. I think that is also an interesting ethical parallel between the two. Alicent was horrified by the idea of having blood on her hands (even when only 2 people know that), but Rhaenyra is ok with that and only mentioned how that would affect her image and what people think of her. At least that's how I see it.

My guess is that they'll tell her that her son is alive, they need her house and her dragons and she won't give them that if she thinks they might have killed her only remaining child but would be fine with the truth since her granddaughter can now inherit the title. Likely her husband already knew but didn't tell her to get the genuine reaction out of her since it'd be rather hard to get a corpse there without being spotted by some of the guards.

Two things: 1- Rhaenyra isn't being greedy, she's being told the FUTURE OF HUMANITY DEPENDS ON HER ASCENDING TO THE IRON THRONE through the prophecy. It's been drilled into her since she was a teenager and named heir. It's what weighs on Viserys as well. 2- I LOVE how they're developing Corlys Velarion. He's so nuanced. He's got Walter White vibes, insisting he's doing questionable things for his wife and kids, but even his wife is like, "Are you, though? Or is this for you?" At the same time, he's extremely accepting of his family because they are his FAMILY - he shrugs off Laenor's sexuality and the questionable paternity of his grandsons because they are part of his family and name. There's something beautiful and realistic to his actions there and I am HERE for it.
@gabraham9509

I'm pretty sure the prophecy is only dependent on a Targaryen sitting the iron throne, and when you think about it, Rhaenyras kids are actually the ones who aren't legitimate targaryens. I think Rhaenyra is definitely thinking of the prophecy but idk how she rationalizes what she's doing through that perspective, because if the succession passes through Aegon, the prophecy is still fulfilled. Anyways yeah Corlys and basically every character is so well done, so many different conflicting but understandable motivations and ambitions. This show might end up being one of my favourites ever.

@@gabraham9509 Yes, regarding the prophecy, we know how it ends (in utter nonsense) - but in the Targaryens' defense, they don't know that yet. They still think it's of vital importance they stay on the throne. I love the idea that they're convinced they are god's gifts to humanity, quite literally. There's no explicit evidence the prophecy is even real, but THEY think it is - and that's all that matters, and I think that hubris is part of what takes the family down and split apart. Also, not sure Aegon even knows it - or if Rhaenyra would trust him with that knowledge lol I'm glad you love the show - I could ramble all day about it! Loved hearing your thoughts on it :)

Lore correction at 36:40 . Vhagar IS the dragon that was missing as mentioned previously in the season. Shortly after episode 5 Laena must have found it and tamed it for herself, and its a shame we didn't get to see that. One of the negative parts of the time jump in my opinion. Vhagar is the oldest and largest living dragon because she was originally Visenya's dragon during Aegon's conquest of the Seven kingdoms. She is a sister to Balerion the Black Dread (who's skull we've seen many times in the show) and Meraxes (who was killed during the attempted conquest of Dorne alongside her rider). So now Vhagar is the only of the 3 dragons still alive and grew too large to fit in the Dragon Pit which is why she was missing for a while.

The brother's synchronization and quick thinking was amazing, and Aegon's response was brilliant, he not only says the obvious, because everyone knows that Rhaenyra kids are bastard, they just don't admit it, but his answer also turns the tables, because he embarrasses Rhaenyra and make everyone turn their eyes in embarrassment for her, you can see in her face. Rhaenyra tried to frame Alicent and have her executed, but the brothers turned the table. It's an incredible scene, because if they hadn't read the room, think fast and given the right answer, they were going to have their mother executed or one of them punished. Aegon and Aemond were amazing in how they acted. And Aemond's answer at the end was the final blow, the people where divided and fighting among themselves, forgetting the reason why all that was happening: The fact that Aemond had conquered the most powerful dragon in the kingdom, and when he brings it to light again, everyone looked scared, Rhaenyra herself is in shock, because everyone there realized the military power that Alicent and her lineage have in their hands, putting everyone in submission.

I agree with all of this, especially the fact the actors played siblings so well in this scene. It really felt like two young siblings freaking out because they are about to get in serious trouble and using how well they know each other to navigate how to best get out of it. Aemond claiming Vhagar is among my top 10 scenes in all of GOT, followed up by one of my favorite lines ever: "Do not mourn me, Mother. It was a fair exchange. Shad, you're the perfect man to review this medieval inspired show. Cause a lot of people don't seem to understand that it is not set in 2022 London. Two thing I want to point out regarding that: The reactions I've seen on the internet (in general; youtube, twitter,etc) to the children's fight have given me goosebumps. Aemond was being a jerk, that's for sure. Now, the key thing here is that he was being a jerk with words, and as Jim Carrey wisely said when asked about the Will Smith incident at the Oscars: "You can't physically assault someone just because he said words you don't like." In this case, it was Aemond who spoke words of contempt, but the one who started the assault was Rhaena (I think it was her) and Aemond obviously fought back. What was he supposed to do, let them beat him? They clearly had no intention of letting him go. Also, regarding the majority if normies that back Rhaenyra casue: "go queen, kill those mysogenist". The idea in medieval times (this is fiction but is basically medieval England) is that the king and the lords were of the same importance ("primus inter pares") but the lords allowed the king to rule (and this is literal, cause the lords had more men than the king), so you as king couldn't do whatever you wanted. In this case, Viserys was chosen in a council that decided that the male line should prevail over the female. Naming Rhaenyra his heir is like saying "ok, I don't give a fuck about your opinions, mates" and that, in turn, means that a lot of the lords can decide "ok, so we don't want you on the throne them; we can't trust you". In other words, war. That's the thing with these shows: it doesn't make sense to judge the characters as if they were 21st century people, cause they're not. It's like watching 300 and thinking the Spartans are idiots cause they don't use guns... well, they didn't exist yet. I get that we all have the values we have, but I think it's more enjoyable to try and put yourself in the time period mindset so you can understand the characters better.

I would disagree quite severely with the assertion that Westeros is equivalent to medieval England. England and most Medieval nation actually had parliaments starting around the 13th century. Westeros is far more absolutist aka the king has the final say in all matter, both due to George R.R. Martin frankly not understanding actual historical Medieval society that well as well as lore reasons. You do need to give a fuck, what your lords say, when you got dragons that can roast all their armies, without breaking assweat. Similarly the succession of Westerosi monarchy is not set to a firm primogeniture as illustrated by the succesion line: Aegon-> his son Aenys--> Aenys´ brother Maegor usurps the throne--> Aenys´ son Jahaerys is crowned following Maegor´s murder/suicide During this we actually had female heirs a number of times, most prominently Rhaena Targaryen, who was declared heir by both Maegor and Jahaerys at different times in her life. Westerosi succession got far more in common with succession during Roman dynasties than Medieval feudal houses.

I love love love your analyses 🎉 However I would love if you could try to tone down your bias against Rhyn. a bit. Not saying you should defend her or anything but at least recognize some elements of her character. It‘s clearly stated that she wished to bear Lenors children but 1. the few times they did the deed she didn‘t get pregnant and he wasn‘t very invested in the marriage so she didn‘t have many opportunities to bear his children. Or more reasons why she is interested in the throne (which is mostly caused by Viserys) You didn‘t mention things like this at all. 🤗

Literally. He, Nerdrotic and Mauler trashed her for having bastards last episode, but this episode is clearly stated she tried to have Laenor's kids, but they failed. It was my impression as well that Rhaenyra was honsetly protecting her children as much as Alicent was for her's. I didn't like her teenage behaviour in previous episodes but after the time skip and her maturing more through age I like her a lot more. Alicent has gone out of favor with me for her wanting to cut out a childs eye, even if there is some justification for it. It's just acting out of anger at that point. She looked like a psycho in that scene, but very well acted.

for Seasmoke they can excuse a refusal to bond with the fact that some dragons are very fussy put simply while a dragon can only bond if their previous rider is dead a refusal to bond is no indication that their previous rider may be alive book spoilers ahead there are some wild dragons later in the war (a full decade after this in the books so there's a chance that Laenor may have died) that people try to tame, Seasmoke is one of the main 4 that people target. 3 of them, including Seamoke, kill people during the attempts before being successfully tamed. one wild dragon called the Cannibal simply never gets tamed, it just kills everyone that goes after it. if the Cannibal ever did have a rider they're long dead.

I think Aemond(sp?) told Viserys that Aegon told him about Ranys children because he is cunning and awesome. He knew right then that his father would kill his mother if he named her. But he also knew that his father would never kill his first born son. He wasn't being a dick or anything. He was thinking logically. Aemond also knows that his brother can handle the question because the answer is so obvious that it's the only annoying part of this show. Fuck this was a good episode.

I've got to disagree with you on the scrap the children's had and the legitimacy of Rhaenyra's claim. I feel that bonding with their mother's dragon was a severe offense that was more than just a violation of protocol. Imagine if you lost your parent and a cousin just came in and claimed something that belonged to your parent by rights of "dibs." I understand why Aemond would do it; I just can't find justification behind it. As for Rhaenyra, whether her sons are bastards are not isn't an important issue. Rhaenyra was declared the heir. Legally, she is the heir. There is a lot of historical precedent for this, with kings declaring someone to be the heir when another had precedence. Her children are an excuse to deny her the throne (as she sees it).
@theallenlim
@theallenlim Жыл бұрын
the issue with Rhaenyra having bastard kids is she is intentionally breaking rules. An heir who has zero regard to the rules will be a tyrant and all the lords of the Kingdom would not support that. Yes you have your birthright but you need to prove to the realm that you deserve it by following the rules, performing yoir duties to the realm in accordance with the laws. Rhaenyra hasnt done that. Worse all of her biggest decisions thus far imply she's a spoiled brat, in other words, a soon-to-be tyrant when she ascends the throne.

One of the many flaws of any show adaptation. Having to cram things together and thus changing their original meaning. In the book Aemond claimed the dragon during Laenors funeral and the girls had no involvment in it. Another one is Cole murdering a dude in front of everyone, instead of killing him in a joust. I understand why they didn't make another tournament scene, but the fact that he didn't suffer any punishment makes the court seem completely moronic.
@thatguyonthespectrum4894

@@theallenlim I agree with you that from the "outside," that is how it should be. The reason I don't think it should be that way "In Universe" is the concept of "the words of a contract and the spirit of a contract." The oath was sworn to her by the lords. The oath wasn't contingent on who she was sleeping with. She was chosen as the inheritor, which is an absolute in the eyes of the law. In the eyes of the law, Laenor acknowledges them as his. If Laenor Velaryon says they're his kids, then legally, they are his kids. In the eyes of the law, they aren't bastards. Alicent resents that Rhaenyra is breaking the "spirit of the law" and thinks that should disqualify her as heir. That resentment that is based on what is "Right" doesn't change the facts. It explains why she emotionally feels Rhaenyra should be stripped of the title of heir. The actual legitimate claim she has, though, is different. There was a precedent set that the male heir proceeds with the female (As with Rhaenys and Viserys). In terms of who the rightful ruler is, the question is only, "Does the rights of the firstborn son precede the rights of the anointed heir if she is a woman." I do agree that Rhaenyra is kind of a B****.

@@manumainio The killing of Joffrey was definitely badly handled in the adaptation. The choice of having Aemond take Vhagar at the funeral was in my opinion a good way to condense a lot of character development and relationships into a brief period and was rather effective (in my opinion)

Vhagar was the "missing dragon" that the valarian girl talked about in one of the first episodes. She presumably found and bonded with Vhagar after hooking up with daemon. Vhagar is the biggest and oldest dragon at the time of the show and was one of the original 3 from the Targaryen conquest.

I personally thought it was unambiguously implied that Rhaenyra wanted Laenor’s life spared. The “death” needed witnesses in order for Laenor to successfully escape and free Rhaenyra to remarry. Did she know Daemon would kill somebody for a corpse-I think deep down, yes, but she probably didn’t ask how he got the body so that she could have plausible deniability and avoid the inner turmoil.

It's also symbolic of Viserys' weakness. His disease could have been dealt with if he had been more decisive in treating it early on. But, like most problems in his life, both personal (his daughter's status, his brother's antics) and political (the stepstones, the succession), he ignores the problems and lets them fester, and only finally takes action when he is forced to, and left with few or no options. Or in the case of this burgeoning civil war, when it is already too late.

I think Rhaenyra was in on her husbands fake death because of the previous scene where she shows her admiration and respect for him without prompting, saying he was an honorable man after he reaffirms his devotion to their marriage and willingness to sacrifice his dream of sailing off with his boyfriend for her. The scene seemed to indicate they were having a frank and honest conversation. If Rhaenyra was planning to murder him for real, a plan she already must've considered at that point, there would've been something to indicate there, unless it was bad writing, which I dont think it was from the overall quality of the show.

I still subscribe to headcanon that dragon bonding works both ways and Aemond is such AH because his Child mind bonded with a 117 year old dragon. I mean never mind the adrenaline that he finally has a dragon, to Vagar every dragon in the show is at best a teenager with a raging hormones. That switch in perspective might influence young mind more than the late Daemons wife.

@@TheKillaShow she literally tried to cite it to Criston when she refused to run away with him. It proves that she does care about it and believes this is her responsibility. The series has a very interesting take on prophecy. The prophecy itself is ultra vague, and doesnt refer to anyone in particular. But every character, desperate to believe in their own specialness, assumes it's about them. Viserys, Rhaenyra, Aegon (Egg) the Unlikely and much later Rhaegar. They all think they're the ones who have to fulfill it, and their belief, ironically, ends up destroying them in the end. It's a brilliant critique on the nature of prophecy.

It’s said that the throne combats poor ruling, hence Viserys getting cut on the blades. His house is falling into disarray through his apathy. Sure, it could be superstition, but in a similar Arthurian sort of way, the hubris of man deluded them into thinking they can be the one to remove the “sword in the stone,” they can be the greatest ruler, they can set things right. When truly, the ones who would be the best kings, are those who recognize the weight of the crown, and the burden it takes.
