This Effective Takedown Addresses A Big Problem In BJJ When Standing

Today's BJJ technique is one of my absolute favorite takedowns for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I demonstrate the technique in both gi and no gi.
One of the big reasons I love it so much is because many BJJ practitioners have a very passive and defensive stance with takedowns. Usually this is where their butt is waaaay back. This makes it hard for shots and takedowns.
So in today's video I'll show you how to do an arm drag to inside trip that I've been able to hit at just about every BJJ competition in the last 5 years. I also show more details and setups to this BJJ take down in my Wrestling for BJJ series which you can check out at the link below.
www.chewjitsu.net/w4bjj
I personally love anything that works off the arm drag in BJJ since no matter the defensive posture. You can always get a grip somewhere on their arms.
Hope the takedown helps and thanks for the request Michael!

I’m not crazy high level. I have a few throws and sweeps I can hit. If you really want to learn Judo, go find a class because you’ll really need to get a feel for the principle of Kuzushi for many throws to work. For this type of hips back, leaned over posture, getting a sleeve grip and a high collar grip to keep them in that position will help land the Uchi Mata. If you go for it and they are able to get upright, this will stifle the Uchi Mata so a common backup plan is to turn back in and drive forward for O Uchi Gari and sometimes that will either work or they’ll push back forward into a second Uchi Mata attempt.

I find that arm drags work well for tall guys too. I'm 6'3" and wrestling with a shorter person is hard as they're already under my hips! The arm drag exposes a hip that I then shoot on and go for singles/high crotch. Works a treat. I'll try this one in class on Saturday. Thank you Chewy.

I know you posted a year ago but how did it work out in the class? I find it bad for me due to my knees. I am 6'1". It hurts to just drop down on my knee. I don't think I would use it in self-defense. This works mostly just on a mat.

@@myhandlehasbeenmishandled I drilled this and even did it against resistance yesterday, and I had absolutely no problem with my knees. If you're tripping them with your right leg, then your left leg (the one used to drive you in) should almost fully extend to the point where the impact on your left knee is minimal. As for the right leg, the impact is mainly on the shin, as seen in the video. I think if you get the technique right, it shouldn't hurt your knee - similar to a double leg takedown.

i think you will have better luck with that inside back heel trip if you get your hip in play .add a short step with your left foot if the drag doesnt bring him close left short step bringing your feet closer together or scissoring slightly behind .when you drive inside with the right hook low emphasize the finish by trying to drive your right knee to the mat with a hip thrust just like an outside heel trip *(hips.100%)

@fatbap 2 жыл бұрын
@@ballisticvole You are correct, however after the 2017 rule changes, the IJF doesnt recognize kouchi gake as its own throw anymore, and consider it a variation on kouchi makikomi. However according to Kano, Kouchi gari, kouchi gake and kouchi makikomi are all different throws, although they do all look very similar. Their English translations help explain the differences. kouchi gari - minor inside reap kouchi gake - minor inside hook kouchi makikomi - minor inside wraparound "Gari" is more like a foot sweep. "Gake" is more like a foot block. "Makikomi" is a whole leg wraparound.

I love grappling but two grapplers going for takedowns always breeds stupid weird stances that no one does or should use in a fight. And it's weird to watch.
