I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

@@NancyBetty-x The crazy part is that those advisors are probably outperforming the market and raising good returns but some are charging fees over fees that drain your portfolio. Is this the case with yours too?

Just watching this episode of "Fire Starter" on Market Watch, and it was incredibly insightful! The concept of early retirement is not just appealing but also crucial in today's fast-paced world. Watching this show has reinforced the importance of financial independence and strategic planning for retirement. Truly inspiring content!

In the middle of the market drop earlier this year due to the pandemic a number of articles were written about FIRE being risky and possibility that those that FIREd may have to go back to work etc. Which all seemed so strange to me because most people who FIREd have no debt at all not even a mortgage, have multiple years cash reserves and generally have hundreds of thousands if not millions in investments whether it's stocks or real estate. In short most have enough assets to ride out a down market for months if not years. And if additional income is needed most have enough cash reserves to take their time looking for a job. Now juxtapose this with a family living check to check or even a family with a decent 3-6 months expenses saved but nowhere near FIRE and suddenly no job. There's still the mortgage and all types of ther expenses left but no money coming in and either no savings or 3-6 months worth. Which situation sounds more dire to you?

When I see numbers I rarely see health care listed ... or any kind of insurance. Those expenses can be a big chunk of income. What does a family of 7 spend in health care and are they insured?

My husband just retired, and his retirement covers our family of 6. $450 is deducted from his retirement check to cover our 4 kids with the better health insurance plans.

Typically insurance or health care costs are quite low for young families, these expenses pick up quite a bit the closer to ('normal') retirement age you get. Its likely they either don't have any or they live in a state with sufficient basic coverage + access.

How does moving to their rental unit help them avoid capital gains tax when they sell?

So if it was a rental, appreciating from the renovations, you would pay 15% on that gain in value. Primary residence as said, for 2 years, no capital gains tax. Probably won’t be much but probably a few thousand
