I have two Tommys on my collection. Although its a simple Quartz watch, they look cool and was good presents from my wife and dad.

Maybe fossil as a “fashion” watch brand? I still wear and love them! But after owning a bunch of seikos and omegas, they just are not in the same league

Why would anyone pay that much for a RL when you can literally get a Tudor/Omega/Sinn/Zodiac/CW and so many more? Hell, add a couple of grands and (maybe suck off your AD) you will be able to get a Rolex OP.

RL watches are produced by Richemont group. They should have opted for 5 days power reserve Baumatic movement at this price point.

The older version has a chronometer cert. Selita, used around 1000USD The chronograph version has the JLC column wheel chronograph 751 - under 3000USD The square 867 is in white gold, Piaget movement around 4000USD All pretty unique, with decent calibers. I'd say worth checking out second hand.

I wonder if this will end up like the Calvin Klein with the ETA automatic movement that they couldn't sell so I was able to get one for $125. People can make fun of the name on the dial all they want but I got the watch for less than the movement costs.

Great segment! The thing to understand here, Jory, is that they do not care whether they sell many watches, just like they don't care whether they sell many truly vintage pieces via RRL. (Obviously, their supply of vintage gems is limited.) What they do with their best watches, with the purple label and RRL, is sprinkle fairy dust over the mainstream collection. Because of the fabulousness of the Madison Avenue store and the burgers at the Paris restaurant and all that, the rest of the brand looks more premium to consumers. Ralph has always said that he tried to create narratives and fictions just as a film director. So he's got his "safari" look, his British gentleman, his Colorado ranch/Santa Fe Western look, his Jamaica beach house look, his Northeast prepster thing. They're stories and people want to cast themselves in those movies. When the internet started becoming big, in fact, RL discovered that people didn't want to buy just what they were trying to advertise in their magazine ads--they wanted everything in it. Watches that look super premium by dint of the strap is a very Ralph move, and pricing it at an extreme keeps the brand "aspirational" for most people. I think there is something to be learned from their other watches too. The bear watches: many people hate this sort of thing because of the implied flex, and I have been one of them--I detest branding to an unreasonable degree--but these also have a cheeky quality: the cartoon bear often BEARS some resemblance to the owner in the cliches of his outfit & attitude, and the owner is generally in on this joke, and I kind of like this and wish I'd realized that that sort of scheme could work. Second thing about the bear watches--like the Charlie Brown characters now on the Timex watches--I think the ones on the Timex watches are cooler looking than the bears--the artfulness of printing characters & illustrations may open the door to new possibilities, including custom character creation and printing. I'd love to talk to someone who really understands the challenges of this sort of dial printing, because I can think of some other ways to do it that could really bring a lot of people some delight. Last thing I'll say, what about the Western and auto themed watches? I mean, the auto themed watches are really fabulous because they show very artful use of materials and reflect on a different part of the auto world than is generally celebrated in the watch world. They are incredible. And I can tell you that this sort of genius all started with Ralph. He's been obsessed with all of the themes and he has always hired incredible people and gotten them to create work in office space that is decidedly not glamorous. If all these watches didn't have Polo or Ralph Lauren all over them, I would love them vastly more than I do. The logo-ing just makes me gag. I would be embarrassed to wear those logos. Obviously most people do not feel the same way!

It's funny because your average joe has more respect for a quartz RL watch than an automatic Tissot (it'shappened to me at work). However, i can think of a bunch of other brands that offer the same specs with real brand history and heritage for the same or less. It might not impress the average guy as much, but we all know it's far better (in a sense).

RL tried the similar thing before, but with better movements. I have their Worldtimer with JLC movement inside. Paid about 5000 for it and have heard the retail was like 7500. It was on sale for like 3000 a piece at one time. I just went for the JLC movement. Love it.

I have one old stainless steel Fossil watch gifted to me and I stand by its good quality. Solid, and somewhere between dressy and rugged. I can vouch for other Fossils though.

I bought Gucci 32mm quartz watch in one of the fancier shopping malls like 28 years ago. It says on dial it is Swiss Made .Today I know it looks very like Cartier Tank. I paid $650 of which it was a lots of money back then. The only reason I still have it, is because it is my wedding watch. And my wife is wearing it now. It still looks and works great but I dont think I would buy it today. People who aren't into watches will overpay for watches like I did for the brand they wish to afford but at least it will be a good quality one with good movement. Your polish viewer.

Years ago Ralph came out with a stirrup watch with a JLC chrono movement in 18K rose gold. Incredible piece with a hefty price. However, my choices are a little lower in price. My fashion watch is the Mondaine Stop2Go that has now been discontinued.

I'm not into fashion watches generally but I like these. Also we have two 20 year old Armani tanks we bought in Venice and Istanbul and both of them are still going strong. The Venice model was a limited edition only sold there, we were lucky that we were on holıday at the right time...a champagne dial though the one we got in Türkiye was more generally available. My wife wears both of them though I sometimes throw on the what we call 'the Venetian'. We should probably set two fashion watch categories, the Daniel Wellington category encompassing all those $10 Chinese watches branded with a logo and those who have been making watches for a long time, even if they began as fashion houses.

Saw some RL tank exceeding 15k, madness

It's been one of my beefs for a long time now and has somewhat soured me on the watch market. The spread on prices in different brands that all use common, off-the-shelf Sellita or ETA movements. Think Longines vs. Traska, Vaer, various Seikos (I know, they are Japanese movements), Hamilton, Tissot. B et M does their own movements as I understand it and Oris just recently wert in-house, away from ETA. I think many are hoping to get by on past glories and as is said, banking on brand recognition or familiarity to get the (much) higher prices.

Me personally, I don't wear or buy anything RL polo (I have my reasons) and although I don't wear any fashion brand watches I do enjoy getting my wife a Kate Spade watch every now and then. She enjoys them and I think their external build quality is quite nice

Well, on the basis that G-Shock seems to regard itself as a fashion brand and I own more G-Shocks than I do "serious" mechanical watches, then I'm happily a wearer of fashion watches. Fundamentally, a watch is a fashion accessory: whilst it does serve a practical purpose, the design/colour/style/brand are very much a personal statement. Any consumer product you own should make you feel good about yourself, be an enjoyable thing to own, and makes the fashion statement you want - If that's a Rolex-ga Deep Aqua Sub Avenger, then that's your groove. If it's a Ralph Georgio Klein quartz number, again that's your groove. My current favourite arm clock is the full metal square G-Shock, GMW-B5000D-1ER. Question arises - is it objectively any more or less a fashion watch than my Tudor Black Bay 41?

Yeah...they aren't going to sell a bunch at that price. Ralph Lauren is a very large clothing brand. When it comes to watches, not so much. Their clothes aren't worth the price of their watches, if that makes any sense. I think $600-$700 would be perfect. No one that buys Ralph Lauren is buying a $4k Ralph Lauren watch. If they can afford $4k on a watch, they're buying Omega, Tudor, or something comparable. What a ripoff this watch is. I totally agree, this could have been something decent.

You seemed to drop-kick Chanel PDQ, Jory, but: for a hot minute, I actually liked their men's J12 automatic (H0684, just to be clear) when it came out way-back. Most of the J12 series *was* seriously "meh", but this one has some traction. RL's releases are okay from a horological POV, but pure horrorshow from a cost/value proposition - you're already well into Tudor/Longines/near-Cartier territory.

Shame about the misaligned bezel screws. Work a little harder and get a Cartier or JLC polo.

Here are some other fashion designers that make some bad ass watches - Bvlgari, (Bulgari), Chopard, and Piaget. Some honorable mentions, maybe Tiffany and Christan Dior...? Wait, wait Jory. I went onto RL's watch website to look into the RL867. I was FLOORED when I saw their prices - they are beyond FAR. RL is NUTS! LOL 🤣

I like the solid color dial version. I do not however like the strap I'd prefer a NATO style strap though. But the price is just ridiculous.

It looks cool, well the black one at least, but that's an insanely high price for what's on offer, like at least 3k more than anybody reasonable would pay for it. RL is not that big of a brand to pull that off... Or maybe they are, I reckon they do have business analysts that came up with the right pricing. Maybe things are different in fashion priority cities like LA or NY. I don’t think these watches would pull in full retail in most others. I’d be watching Macy’s website and checking the mailbox for sale notifications and coupons for deep discounts before running out to get a RL fashion watch for over $3,000. I would rather buy a pre owned Cartier or a new Hamilton. That’s just my opinion. Anybody else can spend their money the way they want…

Polo is the accessible brand Ralph Lauren is the luxury brand like Armani Exchange and Armani; VW and Audi; Toyota and Lexus. These watches are facing the stigma Volkswagen had with the Phaeton. I gotta say they do nail the looks but that's Black Bay money for what micro brands do. My favorite fashion watch is the BR01- watch nerds hate this Bell & Ross but the second hand market remains high, I still love this watch. Of course a lot more watch can and will be had for the money.

I had a similar experience and thought experiment with Ralph Lauren and their watches a few years ago. Wasn't really aware of Ralph Lauren watches but was flipping through an article that highlighted one. It looked like a great dress watch, I did a little more research, Swiss automatic movement, sapphire....all the right specs. I was initially impressed by this fashion watch....and then I saw the price. And I was like no way I'm paying that much for a fashion watch. Haha And yeah I guess Cartier is really a jewelry brand. But felt wrong to pay "real" watch prices for a watch branded Ralph Lauren. Haha. I was expecting it to be much cheaper. I don't think RL has built up enough of a horological reputation to command a premium on a watch. I'm sure they are nice watches but they should be Tissot priced not Tudor priced.
