That's clever. It would increase the number of possible variations so even if someone were to cut off your fingers and try to unlock it, they'd lock the device from incorrect attempts by the time they reach the correct combination. Is it 1 finger? Is it 3 fingers? Is it 2 fingers? If so, which 2 fingers? Would be even more ridiculous if someone comes up with an even more complex version where you have the option to make the phone check the order of fingers as well. So, say that you kept 2 fingers X and Y....then will finger X be on the left of Y, or the other way around? 😂😂😂😂😂

@@9akiama I don’t just mean biometrics, I also mean passwords and hardware keys and using any combination of those authentication methods. It basically kills over the shoulder attacks in public and fingerprint forcing/copy attacks like what police do.

To be completely honest, the lack of touchID is the only reason I haven't tried or switched to iPhone. I don't like face I'd on any phone and I hate constantly typing in a code.

My elderly mum has an s23 and the ultrasonic sensor just doesn't work for her. My pixel 8 which has an optical scanner works fine with her fingers. Even the face unlock doesn't work for her, really disappointed, the biometrics are a huge downgrade over her old S9. That thing had iris unlock, face unlock, and a good old fingerprint scanner.

I never figured out how to use it. It's much harder to unlock the phone. I ended up using face unlock full time

If someone is going to cut your fingers off to access your phone they probably have quicker and more brutal ways to convince you to just give them your files.

It’s plausible to have a single good print of your thumb and fingers from one hand on your device somewhere but unlikely to have two good prints from each hand as the only time someone uses two thumbs on their phone is typing, which isn’t a full print since it’s more precise and it will have numerous overlapping prints. Compared to 4 standard fingers on the back which are generally full prints

100%, my old xiaomi's rear fingerprint reader was substantially easier to get to and more reliable that my Samsung's under the display one, even after using my s21 for over 2yrs I still find the rear a more intuitive place to place my finger rather than the middle bottom 5th-ish of my phone screen. The power button fingerprint reader was also one I liked quite a bit too.

My 1st device with fingerprint was Note10+, and was finicky, and slow too recognize prints. Note 20 Ultra = huge improvement of reading prints, but yes, still needed have finger or thumb at the correct angle to be recognize. I intentionally positioned my finger and thumb is such a way as what was likely position of phone in my hand. This been working out well for me. The 2 print access seems really cool too me.

As long as it gets a clear picture 1/10th of a second is a very long time for a computer. Especially when it's just looking to match one of two possible fingerprints

thinking security, anything biometric is a fail anyways as most countries will allow for warranted and oftentimes even warrantless entry to your devices with biometrics, aka the cops are allowed to just stick your finger on the thing and start snooping around. It's convenient, and it's definitely useful for protecting against general unwanted access, but anything you wouldn't want a good or bad cop looking at should get a long and non-guessable alphanumeric password, and you should know how to get your phone into a BFU state in a pinch (usually restarting, but that can demand a password, or with some brands a button combination does this, although not all will purge the decryption keys from memory)

And fingerprints are almost always a sacrifice of security, there’s a reason Apple no longer uses it. Just take a second to turn your screen off and hold it under some lighting, you will almost certainly see your fingerprints on your display somewhere. Get some graphene on there, take a piece of duct tape, and you can probably unlock the phone without even knowing to whom it belongs. For FaceID you’d have to accurately reconstruct the person’s face, it’s a lot more difficult

You do realise that a passcode/password is a pre-requisite for registering a FP & the same is true even for most "Secure Folders/Private Safe", etc. You can also just put the phone in Lockdown mode, that way you won't be able to bypass even the lockscreen with a FP!
