Back in the '70's (I think) there were 2 movies made called "That's Entertainment" (I and II). Kelly and Astaire hosted them and each was all about movie musicals and dance. The two clips at the end of this video are taken from those movies. You can see that they aged a bit from the first to the second. They may be hard to find on streaming platforms but worth it if you can find them.

Actually, Fred Astire was featured in more clips than any other dancer. He was awesome.

@@hectorsmommy1717I grew up watching MGM musicals and try to watch both of those specials at least once a year. Back then stars were triple threats - they had to be able to sing, dance and act. And that was just to get their foot in the door. These compilations really expose younger people to some of that insane talent. The Nicholas Brothers are a pretty close second to Fred and Gene.

I'm not that young, and I only knew a few of these movies. This was back in the day when you had to know how to dance, act and sing to get anywhere! Always loved watching Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers dance. Also Gene Kelly was a favorite(Singing in the Rain)

@@KaireemReactions The talent on display was only partly natural. Movie studios put their actors under contract, and part of the requirement for most of them was that they had to take singing and dancing lessons, because musicals were a big things back then. That's why so many of them were really good at it - years of classes and effort to get that way. It was said of Ginger Rogers (Fred Astaire's dancing partner, the blonde lady you see dancing with him in many of these clips) that she could do anything he could do, only backwards and in high heels. Well, she got that way after years of rehearsals in which her feet would literally bleed from those awful shoes. Anything for stardom, as they say.

@@KaireemReactions All dance builds on previous dance. Tap came about when African Americans saw the Irish step dancers and Scottish/northern English cloggers who settled Appalachia dancing. They put their own spin on it. White people saw the same thing and developed square dancing. Jazz and swing have their roots in Afro-Caribbean dancing, and influenced hip-hop as well as salsa.

You would be astounded at the clip from stormy weather a 1943 moive featuring cab calloway and the Nicholas Brother It's called Jumping Jive. Also the las clip with thre dancer on a couch is from Singing In the rain starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'connor and Debbie Reynolds. Miss Reynold was only 19 and had to elarn to tap two masters. She went on the become a much loved star and her grew up and played Leia in Star Wars. P.S. the Nicholas Brothers did their dance in one take-no rehersal.

There's a mashup that takes clips from recent dance movies and sets them to Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing", and the contrast is startling. The modern clips have very little subtlety. The dancing is aggressive and honestly one-note. There's little difference in style or tone; it's all in your face with none of the individual style and grace of the older dancing. Don't get me wrong, the dancers are skilled and energetic. But it all strikes me as almost like a gang war - too much competition and LOOK AT ME I'M BETTER THAN YOU. It isn't inviting.
