During the golden era of Hollywood, it was required that performers be a triple threat - able to act, sing, and dance. The studio system meant that no matter how famous you were, you were still just an employee of the studio, and had to be ready to do whatever you were required to do under your contract. It's hard for anyone under thirty now to understand just what a massive hold musicals had on the box office, but back then if you couldn't perform in one, you were likely to miss out on a lot of work. Even Jimmy Cagney, gangster star, could dance - that's him dancing down the stairs in _Yankee Doodle Dandy._

That’s him dancing on the bar also. I always thought that he was the best dancer among the actors. Not counting Astaire, Kelly, etc. Sinatra got pretty good at it too.

My best friend in high school was a major lover of these old musicals. There wasn't a Busby Berkeley movie he didn't know front to back. I can almost hear him reciting the dancers, the movie, and the year for every scene shown here. He's been gone for over 25 years and this video makes me miss him. But it also brings a smile to my face when I think on how he would have loved and adored it. (Miss you, Bobby. Rest in Peace, girlfriend.)

My dad was a huge fan of movies from this era, so I know a few of them. The sailor guy dancing with cartoon Jerry was Gene Kelly. Fred Astaire appeared in A LOT of these clips (the dapper guy usually in top hat and tails or smart suits,) he was an AMAZING dancer, and the lady dancing with him was most often Ginger Rogers, but he often danced with Cyd Charisse as well. You might have spotted a young Judy Garland a few times as well (a.k.a Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz,) and the little guy she mostly danced with was Mickey Rooney. The little moppet-haired girl dancing on the stairs was of course Shirley Temple, the foxy red-haired woman in the long black evening dress was Rita Hayworth, and Bob Hope and a young Frank Sinatra were in there briefly too.

If you like Fred Astaire (who doesn't), you'll get a real treat out of his scene from The Band Wagon played to Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson. You see how much of one dance routine was used in the other. You even see the coin put in the jukebox in both! Don't use the Fred Astaire vs Michael Jackson version. Watch that later.

And I see you recognized the Nicholas Brothers.. Jerry the mouse and Gene Kelley (cartoon mouse) When you stopped it on the lady in black ..that's Ann Miller. She was in with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. The lady in the pale dress with long red hair and red dance shoes..Norma Sheerer in ' The Red shoes" She later went on to do 'Sunset Boulevard.' I love old movies so I know most of the people in this video. A few Easter eggs: * In the scenes where the three dancers tip over the couch, the woman in the middle in the blue dress was Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher mom. Carrie Fisher played Leia in Star Wars. * Fred Astaire, who is in a lot of these clips was a friend and mentor to Michael Jackson. The Smooth Criminal video is a tribute to him after Fred Astaire passed away. That's why Michael Jackson is wearing a black band around his arm as well. It was in honor of Fred Astaire. Notice how both of them wore shorter pants and bright socks that make you watch their feet. * The scene where Gene Kelly is dancing with Jerry Mouse. This movie is called Anchors Aweigh and the first big role for a very young Dean Stockwell. He was best known for Al on Quantum Leap, Brother Cavil on Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), and he played Dr. Yueh in the 1984 version of Dune. * Mickey Rooney appears in some of these clips. He played Gus in the Night in the Museum movies.

Gene Kelly is dancing with the mouse from the Tom and Jerry cartoon. This man was an amazing dancer! In one movie, he danced on rollerskates. He started dancing in his movies in the late 40s and through the 50s. The man with the top hat in the black and white movies is Fred Astaire. He was also an amazing talent, bar none, often with his partner Ginger Rogers with the blonde hair. She said she bled through her shoes during the rehearsals with Fred Astaire. In the last clip, the two older men were Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly years later.

Hey Jayvee - I loved watching the video for the same reasons as you - loved the bass guitar, and how the synchronization makes us appreciate how talented those stars were 70, 80, 90 years ago. It gives me goosebumps knowing they could be successful even today. Watching it again, but with your commentary, was like watching it with a friend. I love both this version and the original with Ronson, Mars & the Hooligans. Thanks!

I got way too excited and put a comment saying you should react to the Nicholas Brothers before you said you recognised them! Such an amazing performance. The trio that did the splits from the balcony were The Berry Brothers - that scene is from the Panama Hattie. Another incredibly talented group. Would love to see you react to "Make 'em Laugh" from Singin' in the Rain. It's not so much dancing but it is so physically draining and entertaining too. The actor, Donald O'Connor was a heavy smoker - four packs a day. Not only did he risk breaking his neck several times in the sequence filmed on a concrete floor but it took a whole day of filming to get the scene. He was bed ridden for three days only to find out that they footage was unusable and had to be re-done. It was the first scene that I saw that made me really love these kind of movies.

Wow!…WOW!….I gotta research these movies and watch them all the way through ! Thanks so much for reminding me ! I recognised a few people in there and a couple’a movies. They used to be on tv back in the 50’s and 60’s and how we enjoyed them…they were “out of date” in that time but still Amazing !, as they are now I think.

The greatest ever. Fred Astaire was in a lot of clips, along with his costar in many movies Ginger Rogers. Among many others, they did a dance number on roller skates. The Cab Calloway number, the dancers were the Nicholas Brothers. Fred Astaire called that Nicholas Brothers clip the greatest dance scene ever put on film. You were right that was Jerry the mouse from Tom and Jerry. The scene with the three dancers and the couches was from Singing In The Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and a 19 year old Debbie Reynolds who up to that point had only sung, not danced. She learned to tap dance for this movie.

Fun reaction. These are all from old movies mostly 40's and 50's but a few earlier. This is such a marvel of editing and finding all these clips...whew the research. The only thing I can think of that makes this possible is that -most likely- the music from these old movies was in 4/4 time as is "Uptown Funk" beyond that all credit in the world goes to the editors. Wow!

Many of these were from the Golden Age of Movie Musicals and is an homage to all those greats of the past and here is a small list of those to look up(and yes that was Jerry the mouse of Tom and Jerry) Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Cyd Charisse, Shirley Temple, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, Grouch Marx, Laurel and Hardy, James Cagney, Mickey Rooney and the amazing dancers that were part of each major movie studio's contract players as they were called back then. Modern dancers will tell you that they take inspiration from these and many others of that time.

That scene with Jerry the mouse is from ANCHOR'S AWEIGH. It's one of my favorite musicals. It stars Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. There was another clip of them in that movie dancing with sailor suits on 3:32. That would be a good one to start with if you wanted to watch some old musicals. The most popular of all the old musicals is SINGIN' IN THE RAIN 3:53 which is another good option. It should have won the Oscar for Best Picture in my opinion. It's iconic.

At the beginning, you have the old man and the little girl. The girl is Shirley Temple and the man is Bill "Bo Jangles" Robinson (yes, there really was a "Mr. Bo Jangles" as sung by Sammy Davis, Jr.). The part with the 2 men and the woman dancing on the sofa was Gene Kelley, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds from the excellent movie, "Singing in the Rain." Debbie Reynolds' daughter, of course, was Carrie Fisher, of the Star Wars movies. I could go on to ID the rest of these, but the names probably wouldn't mean much to you. Many of the bits shown were Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who made several comedic musicals. Okay, one more. There was a line of men toward the end...they look like dancers. One of them, if you look real close, is Buddy Epson, also known as Jeb Clampet from the TV show, "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Hi Jay, I absolutely loved this it made my day - I was born in 1958 and I remember the songs my grandparents still had 78 rpm records of some of these. The editing is absolutely incredible, it had to take them quite some time to put this together, but I'm grateful they did. I'll be watching this again and again for sure. I just liked/subscribed to your channel appreciated your reaction. God bless you.

Hey - love your reactions; you're animated and honest. Cab Calloway was a musician - the three dances are The Nicholas Brothers. Fred Astaire said their work on the stairs was the finest piece of dance he'd ever seen and one thing he could never have replicated. As for the others, they are all top flight and worth checking out on their own; I think you'll like what you see, but for starters, Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth. You were right - that's Jerry the Mouse but with Gene Kelly (Singin' in the Rain). Shirley Temple around age three and Bill Robinson - she had a genius IQ and could memorize lines (and steps) and then cue other actors and dancers with them the next day. Bill Robinson loved working with her because of that - he said she was a better dancer than almost all the adults and, of course, it broke color lines to have even them dancing together. Eleanor Powell was said to be the best tap dancer in the world - she's the one who goes head over heels repeatedly in the battleship scene. Enjoy!
