For anyone curious... The main gist of this game was that an alien (presumed to be Exor) was travelling through the galaxy when he lost control and dropped the Ore onto prehistoric Earth. The Ore has been lying in wait for someone to take it and gain whatever powers it may have. 10 Warriors from past, present and future have a share of this Ore and now must fight each other for more.. and, of yeah, the guy who had the Ore to begin with is back. Now for the characters themselves.. Ahau Kin: An evil Mayan priest, he had visions of a strange power residing within his village.. a piece of the Ore was in the sacrificial well. One by one, his slaves died trying to get it. So, he took it upon himself to get the Ore. Anubis: A grave robber searches the Valley of the Kings in Egypt for treasure and find a hidden burial chamber... only to find out that its been booby trapped with the Ore. The Ore destroys the body of the robber and now forces him to come back as Anubis. Cy-5: In 2096, scientists implant a piece of the Ore into an advanced cyborg called 'Cy-5', unaware of the life giving properties that it has. Cy-5 comes to life and kills the scientists. It concludes that in order for humanity to advance, it needs more pieces of the Ore and will do whatever it takes to get it. Kabuki Jo: On the eve of a great battle, a feared samurai finds a piece of the Ore.. and it turns bad for all parties here. The samurai, now known as Kabuki Jo, kills his men in a massive rage. He is now an outcast hoping to learn the great powers given to him. Maximus: A well known gladiator who fought for the entertainment of his masters, he was chosen to compete in a battle during a festival that celebrated the Ore. During this festival, he kills his opponent AND his master along with taking the Ore. Now consumed by its powers, he fights for all who have become enslaved. Pagan: Ancient manuscripts lead Pagan to the ruins of a cathedral where she, a mistress of the dark arts, once prayed at. Reciting the incantations on the manuscript, she gets the Ore and it has increased her lust for power and destruction. Tak: A long time ago, a kingdom worshipped the Ore... and then the Fire Nation attacked. (kidding, kidding). A rival nation declared war on this kingdom in order to get the Ore. With no options left, the King hid it inside of a stone idol. The Ore comes to life and the idol becomes Tak - the avenger of a lost kingdom Vallah: A warrior princess who got lost during an ice storm, she hid inside a cave when she saw a green light. Hacking away at the ice, she hits the Ore and becomes Vallah - a Viking princess who rules the realms of ice. Voodoo: In the Caribbean, a village has been under the spell of a very nasty witch doctor who has the people under his control thanks to his black magic. In a desperate attempt to finally get rid of him, the villagers captured him and burned him at the stake. They then threw the burnt body into a swamp... that just happens to have a piece of the Ore. The witch doctor is resurrected as Voodoo, god of the undead (and basically the closest anyone will get to Solomon Grundy without copyright infringement) Warhead: The government, worried that the experiment to merge nukes with the Ore is failing, sends in their best man. When he gets there, the building explodes and he is covered with the Ore... this turns him into Warhead - the end result of what would happen if Captain America was done with nukes instead of a super soldier serum

People say it sucks because they play it for the first time after having played so many more polished fighting games, but you should’ve seen me and my friends playing this for hours on end as kids when it was the only fighting game we knew of. i remember seeing this in the arcade back when it was out and it had a big flashing 3D button on the controls to emphasise its 3Dness this is so amazingly 90s althoug even at the time i thought that looks like pure trash and passed on it but i definitely remember all the green and the sound effects.

Yes, it was developed by the MK dev team. They didn’t want to bring Mortal Kombat to 3D until they had a better grasp of the (then) evolving 3D graphics technology, so they developed War Gods. It basically gave the MK team enough confidence to develop and release the first 3D MK game, Mortal Kombat 4. If you notice between the two games (i.e. War Gods and Mortal Kombat 4), MK4 is plague’s from the same shaky camera angels as War Gods.

Matt mcmuscles did a cool video detailing midways attempts to recapture the MK hype including war gods.

lmao, so story time, War Gods was basically a Beta game, a test bed for what would eventually be MK4. This was their first foray into making a 3 fighting game ever, so they weren't willing to commit to making their first attempt an MK title, so they went with War Gods. obviously they learned from their mistake, and a more powerful version of the engine was perfected to make MK4

Thanks a lot Max! War Gods is a great, beautiful, very arcade game, especially for those times, late 1995. Besides, it is one of the first games in a three-dimensional environment. In general, all Midway games are very bright and arcade, especially fighting games, this is one of my favorite developers, alas they are gone. If I were a developer, apart from naturally Mortal Kombat series, I would make modern 3D sequels to War Gods and Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, or at least their reboots, these are legendary arcade fighting games of the 1990s. In War Gods is a very exciting, fiery, gameplay, stunning sound effects, voices and music, all in a wonderful space style, sci-fi, with some sort of esoteric-surreal overtones. Especially it is created by the main boss of the game - Exor, a kind of space super warrior. These savory sounds of blows, old, good On The Ground combos, the return of which in a fighting games I so dream, laughter and voice of Exor, are associated with the strongest, good impressions from childhood. Definitely, War Gods is a game of all times and peoples.

My brother and I had this game on our dad's computer when we were little. We asked out dad to buy it because it had words like "war" and "gods" in the title and those were cool and in English. We couldn't actually play against each other because the keyboard overloaded with inputs if we both tried to control a character, so we just kind of played again the AI over and over. It's really bad, but I have some nostalgia for it.

Fun fact: I saw this during a sale at Knight's Ferry in California a few years ago, and I chose to buy a comic book instead.
