I wanted to have an honest conversation with you about the future of this channel. This Guitar/Gear/Music channel has grown so much in the past year and a half, and I'm so grateful for every one of you! The process has certainly had its ups and downs, which I'll dive into in a little more detail here but there's something we have to address. While this year started off with a bang for me, in the last couple of months my views are down, my watch time is down, and my subscriber growth rate is down. Which can really only mean that I haven't been creating the type of content you want to engage with. Further, I have to be honest that I haven't been making the type of content I want either.
Since we are both at a crossroads on this channel's journey, I wanted to ask you how I can make better videos in the guitar, gear, and music space on KZfaq. I would love to hear from you about what makes you want to click on a video and watch it all the way through to the end! Is it the subject matter? Is it the editing style? Is it the personality? If you're willing to share in the comments below about anything and everything that would describe your ideal guitar, gear, and music channel. I'm dedicated to really growing this channel which can't happen without making the type of content you want to watch, engage with, share, and return to. So at the half point in the year, I'm asking for your help! I want to create a unique channel in the music space that hopefully fuels a little bit of my desire for creativity, but most importantly, provides you with value, entertainment, a good laugh, and just ultimately enriches your experience! I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts on any/all of the following:
- What types of videos in this space make you feel like you have to click on the video and watch it front to back?
- What editing style do you like? Quick, fast-paced? Cinematic? Raw?
- What in music do you actually want to learn more about?
- If you could describe your dream KZfaq music channel, what would it look like?
- What do you feel like you're missing from KZfaq Guitar, Gear, and Music channels?
- Do channel memberships interest you? What would you want from a channel membership though KZfaq or Patreon?

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who is supporting the channel! It doesn’t go unnoticed! If you’re willing to share some ideas on what would be your ideal channel, I’d be so grateful! 1. What types of videos in this space make you feel like you have to click on the video and watch it front to back? 2. What editing style do you like? Quick, fast-paced? Cinematic? Raw? 3. What in music do you actually want to learn more about? 4. If you could describe your dream KZfaq music channel, what would it look like? 5. Also if it's easier, I like more short videos (5-10 minutes) rather than fewer long ones (over 10 minutes). Your production level is really good so more of these "raw" videos is still way better than anything I would do lol. Anyways, I don't play P&W but I'm fascinated with the tone and approach, so this morning I was trying to find songs and play along with it. Would be really fun to see how you approach learning new songs, how you set up your gear, etc. Especially if you have to do it anyway!

Some of my favorite videos I wish there were more of are backstage vlogs. An inside look on what it's like to tour, etc. I'm pretty sure there's no playback engineers who have a youtube channel with videos like that right now. One of my favorite guys to watch is Matt Horn. He's a drum tech and he wears a GoPro on his chest and basically records his day. It's super cool to see what it's like behind the scenes. Mostly, I think you should just make the content you like to make and your passion will shine through. Eventually the people who need to see your videos will find you. I watch a lot of youtube videos because of the video, but I become a subscriber because I like the person and how dedicated they are to their work. I know that whatever video they've made was created with passionate intent. I enjoy your videos and your production quality and editing is great- on par or better than most youtuber musicians. And you're a great friend who I appreciate. One of the hardest workers I know.

Thanks so much for the ideas Noah! I think tour VLOGs can be super cool! I haven't had the best luck with VLOG style videos in the past, but it's definitely something I'm interested in. I'll have to check that out! And thank you so much man! Excuse me while I go cry a little bit- Love you dude, and as you know, I think you're the best. Insanely talented musician. Hilarious homie. And one of the best dudes I know!

Hi Justin! I love that you are asking us what we want to see. I agree - it's a yet! I do believe that you are going to continue to grow and that you offer a unique perspective because you are an amazing person. I love how people commented and I could tell that you've really made an impact on them by sharing you - and your experiences. You should definitely have an element that you enjoy - I think that is equally important that you are energized about what you create. That will help others that do click on your videos stay engaged with you. You are a fantastic editor and I love the fun things you put into your channel. I love seeing behind the scenes too - and what happens in your world as it is so different from what I do from day to day. Yes - adding more music into it! I love that! and I love when I got to see you doing music too! Can't wait to see what you do next. It may be some trial and error. I am praying for you that your channel explodes and that you enjoy the process too!

IMO lean into what you like and be different! There are a million channels that do gear reviews and product launches. But there are only a handful of channels that talk about maximizing the gear you have, and using that gear to make more music. You are one of the few channels that covers Quad Cortex so that's what I like to see, but I'd be interested to see what you think deep diving into different types of effects, or building out tones to match a song (or not if that's your approach, sticking to your tone!), getting ready to play a gig, etc. Or even non gear stuff, like learning new songs and rehearsing and finding gigs.
@JustinMuncy

@@JarickL Thanks so much for the feedback and ideas!! I actually have a video on every idea you mentioned! Hahaha Just the challenge of my videos on anything but the Quad Cortex underperforming. If you look through my videos you’ll find them! But it’s nice to know that while those videos kind of tanked for me, the topics are wanted!

Hey Justin, I'm just a random person who watches your videos occasionally because I appreciate your perspective and laid-back personality. I think your editing is quirky and fun, and it comes across as authentic. Your natural and authentic approach is a plus! I would love to see more videos where you discuss the mindset and skills needed to play in different settings. Not many people who talk about playing in church have also toured in non-worship bands, but I believe many of us are interested in the differences and similarities between these two dynamics. I think your authentic approach combined with these perspectives could fill a niche. I'm not sure how big the niche would be or if you would be interested in exploring these topics, but there does seem to be some discussion about "can it do worship" in gear videos and the characteristics of worship guitar in relation to good technique in other genres. At least, that's what I find interesting. All the best!

Someone is asking the question we’re all wondering! I’ve noticed a bunch of larger creators have declined on their standard threshold of views per each upload. I imagine most of that is COVID fallout and people not watching KZfaq videos as much. But I’m glad you asked this question Justin.

I know this must be scary, seeing the stats, but I can begin by saying: I am definitely not the demographics of this channel (I am pretty old, and I do not own the QC, I don't even play Worship music - yes I am a christian haha) yet, here I am! So you must be doing something great! Don't let numbers and stats discourage you. In my poarticular case, I've actually unsubsubscribed from all guitar channels that turned into gear review channels. I love guitar and music. As I commented before, I'd love to pick your brain on your compositions, your arrangements, how do you go about your drum programming, your mixes. That stuff fascinates me! I'd love to be able to compose a 1 min song with just drums, guitars and bass that would sound so full and complete as yours. 2 cents from an old dude! Keep it up man!

I think firstly, do the content that excites you. I would rather watch someone do XYZ thing but see them genuinely care than do it just cause. That being said, I would say maybe find a niche that you like and stick with it? I see channels like Rhett Shull and I see whatever he is doing, it comes off as genuine since it's just him talking on a particular subject. Tours, recording, gear, etc. That being said, I personally really like your QC content and picked up your preset on it since it sounded the most like me. Since I am new to the unit I wanted to see how someone more familiar with the unit sees it and builds things while I get into the all-in-one mindset again (had a Headrush for about 5 years and now analog for about 2). Maybe get into a new thing like mixing and bring us along for the journey? I personally like that sort of "learn with me" type of videos.
