I’ve heard that before and yes it’s driven me crazy sometimes. It can be made worse, or brought into play with saturation as well. Now I’ll be more conscious to look for that 5th harmonic if I’m over a minor chord. Maybe EQ it out, or even grab the harmonic in Melodyne’s editor and pull it down.

Awesome, dude! I encountered this problem a couple of times and always scratched my head at what I was doing wrong. It usually ended up in me using a completely different sound altogether. Glad to know that I am not crazy. :D

Great vid! I think I’ll just be avoiding that 5th harmonic/ Major 3rd entirely from now on because I’m faaaar too lazy to automate that on everytime a major chord shows up above it and 90% of the time I’m in minor 😂 But thank you for this! I had no idea this major 3rd harmonic was a thing! I think you’re on to something here! Subscribed for more ultra nerd content! 🙏🙏🙏

Depending on the density of the rest of your track and the strength of that 5th harmonic, it probably won’t matter much - use your ears above all! This is something I noticed with my ears first. So if you can’t hear anything wrong in your track, there’s probably nothing to fix.

@@UndulaeMusic I get you. I’m always trying to improve. Being mindful of the fact that this harmonic is technically a major 3rd that’s something I had never even considered. Will definitely be interesting to experiment!

Just found your channel, huge fan of the format and presentation, if you are working with a sample would it be possible to eliminate the fifth with something like izotope rx? Or a spectral editor
@UndulaeMusic3 ай бұрын
Yeah, that would work!

What if I dont have the 5th harmonic in the sub? I generally just add the 3rd harmonic and a bit of distoriton or fm on it
@UndulaeMusic4 ай бұрын
Adding distortion will still most likely introduce those higher harmonics anyway. I’m not saying 5TH HARMONIC BAD, AVOID AT ALL COSTS but it’s certainly something to be mindful of. Use your ears above all!

Why does subbass always sound dissonant? In your examples the first note sounded nice, but the second always bothered me. This also happens in pro productions. Edit: I think you just explained it in your video. But still do you hear the second note of your subbass being a bit dissonant or is it just me?😅

yeah that's the whole reason I made this video lol
