Edmonton to Calgary in 45 minutes? TransPod’s high-speed rail could reach speeds up to 1,000 km/h, and construction of a seven-kilometre test track is slated to begin next year. CBC’s Min Dhariwal spoke to TransPod CEO Sebastien Gendron about the project.

let me get this straight, the idea is to use something based off the hyperloop (a literal scam), except instead of using the scam tech from hyperloop u want to replace it with functional tech from modern highspead rail (maglev which probably still means extremely expensive carbon intensive super conductors), but you also want to lower both the capacity for riders and freight by making it go by 1 car at a time, effectively kneecapping effective efficient throughput of goods and people, optimizing for what? speed around corners? what is it gonna be, 10 min faster by being 7x the cost?

It's not a vacuum tube. it's a jet propulsion system in a guidance tube. there's no need to maintain a vacuum therefore DRAMATICALLY reducing the complexity. It does sound completely bonkers at first glance but look deeper, they aren't trying to reinvent the wheel. My only real concerns are cost effectiveness and to some extent safety.

The Calgary-Edmonton corridor is a great opportunity for high-speed rail or even a maglev train but hyperloop-style trains just feel like they are over-engineered. This would be the first successful hyperloop project that is commercially viable if its successful. This would be fantastic for Alberta if it worked, however, I am extremely skeptical of hyperloop trains because they remain unproven. Also, it would be cheaper to build a maglev or a regular high-speed rail, either one of these would connect Calgary to Edmonton in a little over an hour.
@AnthemUnanthemed

This isn't a hyperloop btw. Lots of people seem to think that. These guys want to do a small maglev elevated jet propulsion "pod" in a non vacuum tube - mostly just for safety so you don't go flying lol none of what they're doing is revolutionary in it's own sense, it's just never been put together like this. @@Fenthuleok so in order for anything maglev to work its likely going to be cooled by liquid gases at a high pressure which are used to keep the superconductors cool bc thats the only way u can get something like this to hover, so the energy into the ln2 or something else plus the heat from a jet propulsion system all confined in another tube sounds more and more like a complicated and expensive bomb to cause the most expensive damage expensive when it fails

Man I'm soo conflicted about this company/plan. On on hand the logical side of me SCREAMS "Gadgetbahn", but on the other hand when I looked into it a little further, they aren't actually proposing anything revolutionary. It's just a maglev jet propulsion powered train in a tube. I think the whole "pod" idea needs get tossed away, and actually use a train, but the fact that they aren't trying to do the whole vacuum tube nonsense of the hyperloop is a MAJOR credit to the plan. The physics make sense honestly, it's just the cost effectiveness that has me seriously concerned. edit: after looking at these comments I can tell that this interview should have asked better questions as most people seem to think this is a hyperloop, which is is not. Well, not really in the vacuum tube sense that we all saw the scams about lol

Every 10 or 20 years this pops up as another headline. Ho-hum. In the early 1980s there was a passenger service involving a unique looking rail, car, singular, with the operators cabin in the middle a foot or two higher than the rest of the rail car. I have always wished I could’ve taken that once or twice just for the fun of it. The problem was, there were too many crossings and collisions with cars along the way. Or so the railroad said.

It’s worse than a gadgetbahn. It’s hot air and not buildable. The same right of way required for this could be just as easily used for a dedicated HSR line. There you go. No freight traffic.
@Fenthule
@Fenthule 5 ай бұрын
@@transpiler The freight traffic is a plus though. Passenger high speed rail wont be cost effective enough to build the lines alone. You basically NEED freight service in order to break even for the cost to construct and operate. There's simply not enough daily commuters between the cities willing to pay that much to justify building it without also having freight available. The physics behind their project is pretty solid since they aren't doing a hypertloop with a vacuum tube, they aren't reinventing any wheels here at all. My only real question is the cost effectiveness of the system, and if it wouldn't be better to ditch the "pod" and just use actual trains.
