I'm a grown man (50), and this song brings up such deep emotions within me that I can never listen to it without crying. Donny Hathaway is one of the greatest vocalists of all time, and of his *many* great performances, this is my favorite.

I should have added that Donny lived adjacent to where I grew up in St. Louis. He went to school with my former horn instructor and sang with Angela Winbush, a former local church parishoner of mine. He certainly was a gem.

Donny Hathaway had such a soulful voice. He had a lot of great songs. "The Ghetto", "Little Ghetto Boy", "A Song For You", "For All We Know" & "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". I really like the songs he did with Roberta Flack especially "Where Is The Love" & "The Closer I Get To You". He struggled with mental health issues during his life. Sadly he died in 1979 at only 33 years of age.

Donny was the greatest and most gifted male vocalist I've ever heard. His influence on singers you hear to this very day. Stevie Wonder once said about him " He is a singer's singer, he is who we listen to". He has always sounded like what I imagine a male angel to sound like. Also he was a beast of a pianist.

Spike should not have used this song in that movie. This song has nothing to do with Civil or Human Rights.

Hey. Donny and his work were so important to me growing up. I clearly remember hearing this song for the first time. I just stopped in my tracks - could not walk. I was in tears throughout the song. :) But tears of joy!

Big Donny fan myself. He sung classica with Roberta Flack (Closer I Get to You,Back Together Again,Where Is the Love, etc.) and left a short yet impressive body of solo work with covers and originals ranging from soulful yet jazzy covers like his spin on Stevie Wonders Superwoman (I suggest you check out his rendition of Superwoman for your next reaction. You will not be disappointed) to an upbeat jazz funk rendition of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. And his originals like Little Ghetto Boy,We Need You Right Now,etc, have solidfied his legacy as one of the greatest talents of the world of music yet one of the most unsung to an extent. But he is definitely an artist you can't just listen to but are compelled to experience.

Stevie was influenced by Donnie, meaning you hear Donnie in Stevie's voice and sound. The album that did it was the eponymous sophomore release. Stevie's recording approach changed thereafter.

Mugnify many people think Donny Hathaway wrote the song "Someday We'll All Be Free" about Black Americans and/or the Civil Rights Movement . This isn't true. First, Donny didn't write the lyrics and secondly the song has nothing to do with the Civil Rights Movement or Black Americans in general. It is a song written for and about Donny and what he personally was going through as he fought his demons. On January 13, 1979, Donny Hathaway was found dead on the side walk outside of the Essex House Luxury Hotel in New York City, where he had been living. Since the glass from the window had been carefully removed and there were no signs of struggle, his death was ruled a suicide. The last studio album that he recorded was "Extensions of A Man" in 1973. "Extensions Of A Man" contained the single "Someday We'll All Be Free", which was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain that Hathaway was experiencing. After Hathaway recorded the song, he listened to the play back of the studio cut. Hathaway cried as he listened to the song for the first time. After Hathaway's death, this disclaimer was added to the liner notes of "Extensions of A Man" by Edward Howard: "Donny is no longer here, but the song [Someday We'll All Be Free] gathers momentum as part of his legacy... Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Howard also added: "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny, because Donny was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.'" "Someday We'll All Be Free" Lyrics: Hang onto the world as it spins, around. Just don't let the spin get you down. Things are moving fast. Hold on tight and you will last. Keep your self-respect your manly pride. Get yourself in gear, Keep your stride. Never mind your fears. Brighter days will soon be here. Take it from me someday we'll all be free Keep on walking tall, hold you head up high. Lay your dreams right up to the sky. Sing your greatest song. And you'll keep, going, going on. Just wait and see someday we'll all be free. Take it from me, someday we'll all be free. Take it from me someday we'll all be free. Take it from me, take it from me, take it from me.

Donny did the music & a friend of his wrote the lyrics bc he knew Donny struggled w/schizophrenia. He barely recorded this, then he ran out crying. He committed suicide. I didn't realize he was so young. Please react to A Song For You by Donny & his daughter's (Lalah Hathaway) cover. The live performance. She's phenomenal! The songwriter Leon Russell sings this song. It's very different, but just as beautiful. Then, check out the Donny & Roberta Flack's duets. They're fantastic. You'll love them. Thx

@@gwennmesler5997 not really. There is no on past or present who comes close to the stratospheric perfection of that God Gifted voice. Not even his daughter who has a beautiful voice. Yes, and reminiscent of his, but not close her father’s level of harmonic glory. There’s no one like him. After 50 yrs, his voice is still angelic - moving me to spaces beyond this natural realm. Looking forward to heaven ..
