Most MacBooks from the last 6-8 years have a Retina display. These displays are beautiful and crisp, but they pose a huge problem for the future repairability of MacBooks as they age. In this video I'll outline why this problem is so huge and one potential loophole...

@@NicolasSilvaVasault no one is justifying it at all. It’s just on an economic standpoint, your choices are limited to either pay for the repair, body swap it, sell it for parts or use it as a screenless Mac. Bar selling it, it’s the cheapest thing you can do with a problem so financially detrimental.

@MatchingUser
@MatchingUser 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, Hey Hugh! Just came from your Apple Watch video! Yeah, I agree, If tech companies just offered replacement components, repairs wouldn’t be so expensive. Unfortunately a part that might cost 80-200$ to build is being sold for 500$ just for it to likely happen in a few years time.
@Bluecolty
@Bluecolty 3 жыл бұрын
I sort of agree hugh but at the same time, companies have tried this and it doesn't fix the prices. You're certainly the dude who knows his stuff about fixing phones, and I'm sure with that in mind you've seen how expensive replacement Samsung screens are. Samsung for the most part is one of the better companies when it comes to pumping OEM displays into the market. But somehow they're also one of the most expensive when buying one. A good condition galaxy s8 screen here in the US goes for $160. An iPhone X screen goes for around $100. Both phones are the same age, and the iPhone should (in theory) be more because that's just the way it is with Apple parts. But its not. Its just wack to tell you the truth.

You can understand why that is though, right? What is sad is the fact we dont boycott overpriced items to the point where the seller is forced to lower their price lest make no money at all. Ive been subject to those maret forces as a seller and Ive adjusted- why cant we subject bigger sellers to the same forces..?
@albeit1

There would never BE any used parts if this WASN’T true. Every product eventually gets cheaper to buy than what you can sell the parts for. Otherwise, there’d be no reason to buy it when the cost or repairing exceeds what you can get for it. People are willing to buy a high price for a part because they value THEIR machine more than the used market can. Because they have a lot more invested in their machine than the hardware. They’ve got software and data and it takes time to switch.
@davidthomas6949
@davidthomas6949 3 жыл бұрын
@@albeit1 Very true, but still. Youd think that as parts gets older and older they would be cheaper, or at least the seller more open to negotiations. I think a lot of these eBay sellers have a LOT of whatever parts theyre selling and they lists doens if not more of these types of parts with massive inventories, and they are just willing to play to stubborn waiting game.

Apple don't have to sell the parts themselves. Their suppliers for those parts can and would sell the parts themselves if it weren't for the fact that their contracts with Apple _specifically forbid them from doing so._ Apple could easily become more repair-friendly by doing markedly _less_ than what they're doing now.

Well the T2 is only in 2018 and newer Macs. Also I believe that the screens just have to have been validated by Apple. I've swapped logic boards between two 13" MBPs (with T2 chips) and they both worked just fine after that. I didn't replace any parts, just swapped the logic boards (and touch sensor) between the two machines. I was shocked that a 3+ year old laptop was gonna cost that much to repair. The worst part is this happened at the most inconvenient time too, it was finals week for me in school and I really needed my laptop. Long story short, ended up getting it repaired for free by them due to this being my second issue with the display (first one was fixed under warranty) and my need for the laptop due to finals.

I've fixed the delamination on a lot of customer computers. You use the disinfectant wipes (make sure it's not dripping wet but just lightly wet) and you take a few minutes of quick rubbing with a light pressure. The screen looks like new. I then put a screen protector on (the ones that cost a few bucks on Amazon) just in case. The first one I ever did, the customer brought it back for another issue a few months later and the screen still looked great even though I didn't put a screen protector on it.

One could also run these devices as lidless work desktops by pairing them with a suitable monitors. As a bonus, they get a "built-in UPS" to protect against data corruption because they have large batteries which no longer have to power an energy-hungry screen. Keeping in mind that these machines ship with a 7 year support lifespan, even the old 2013 models could be re-used as thin clients to extend their lifespans up to the 10 year mark, depending upon how long Catalina will receive updates for, which should be until (Big Sur)+2 major version of macOS is released.

Yeah, but clients really tend to look strangely at you when you walk into a meeting room with a trolley with a monitor and an extension cord on it... Oh, and yeah - I have the late 2013 13 inch version, and it's in the second screen and looking horrible. After 15 years as a Mac user I am moving the entire household to Windows and Android, and - to my surprise - it's a lot easier than I had ever thought.

My MBP 2015 works great I am just using it with the external monitor for comfort. I hope windows/android setup works for you and your clients in the future then although saying you owned a 2013 MBP means it took 8 years to switch to other operating systems.

I completely agree, and thats what I was about to write as a comment, but when I read the first few comments under the video, I saw yours, and I preferred agreeing. Its a clever kind of usage, when you can have the financial benefit of a cheap but faulty MacBook Pro with a screen like that, and spending 200 euros more to buy a nice monitor and make it a desktop computer basically.

@batsonelectronics
@batsonelectronics 3 жыл бұрын
they don't make them anymore. only 2012 and Early 2013 assemblies work on the 2013 and Apple generally stops repairs after around 4 years, sometimes 5 years. If they did still make them, probably around $550 installed based on prices for newer models. Late 2015 is the oldest I could find that Apple would replace. ( late 2015 ) Late 2013 to mid 2015 should all use the same part. I have a late 2015 with a broken lcd. Not worth fixing since the machine value is only a few hundred above the lcd cost. I use it with a 27" Thunderbolt display as a desktop, I took the broken display off the machine.

Knowing Apple’s recent hypocrisy when it comes to environmental impact, it probably won’t be long before they start pairing MacBook displays to the original model they came on so you won’t even be able to swap displays from two identical MacBooks. I think this situation is quickly gonna get worse.

It's even worse with "vintage" and "obsolete" Mac computers. My 10-year-old iMac 27" still runs beautifully, and I see no reasons to replace it. Unfortunately, Apple's idiotic decision to use AMD Radeon 5xxx GPU really restricts me to High Sierra. Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur can be installed and run, but lot of apps that use Metal engine cannot display anything, including Apple Maps. The solution is to replace the GPU with ones from 2011-2012 iMac (about €150 to €300) and flash the GPU to work with macOS.

I'd like to see a parting out video but, please include an accounting of all the time involved - disassembly, researching pricing of each item, photography, writing up and posting the listings, keeping track of the listings, communicating with buyers, gathering packing materials, printing shipping labels, trips to the post office, etc. It really adds up and should be factored into the worthiness of such a project.

It’s not a problem, it’s just apple’s policies It’s vintage and apple will not repair anything vintage unless you live in California and by law that state is the exception. I own that exact computer and I love it. Unfortunately, the battery needs to be replaced because it doesn’t hold a charge very long and the sound coming through the speakers is very muffled. Apple no longer makes the battery for this model. I tried checking with a few consultants who discouraged me from replacing the battery even if I can get one. I am able to use the computer plugged in and get better sound with the use of earphones. My question is: Will using the computer constantly plugged in harm it or even worse will it become dangerous? Will it eventually just stop functioning?I would like to keep it a little longer if possible. I just bought an iPad to reduce my use of the computer for non-essential tasks. I am also backing up the computer to a time capsule regularly in case it just stops functioning. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Thanks to you Luke I've been refurbishing old unibody MacBook Pros as a side hustle, and also for my own personal use. However, I picked up a 2014 15" MacBook Pro with 16gb of RAM recently on Craigslist for $375 that has this peeling issue. My thinking is for that price I'm just going to live with it, and it is still great as my new every day machine. Thankfully it becomes a lot less noticeable when the display is actually on and I'm using it. To me it still feels like a win. I appreciate all you do. :)

Really thankful for how reliable my early 2013 13 inch retina MBP has been. Bought it eight years ago. Battery still holds 6-7 hours of charge if I'm just doing light work (was 4-5 until I recently repasted the CPU). Screen got loose but I tightened the screws so now that's good as new. No delamination (screen still looks great even by today's standards). It's still my daily driver and is rock solid. I'll be very sad when it finally kicks the bucket.

I have a 2013 13” MacBook Pro that had this issue, Apple changed the display assembly under a replacement program, but that screen did the same thing about six months later (Apple’s warranty on repairs is 90 days) and they wouldn't replace it again For free, so I just have it plugged into a monitor instead, but it's still annoying.
