Today, from my friends at JT Auto Classics (www.jtautoclassics.com) we have this 2005 Mercedes Benz E55 AMG. I've not driven an E55 before, but I have tried the C55 and SL55 - so how will this compare?

Agree with you entirely on this. I've had mine for nearly a decade now. Still barely 27k miles on the clock. This car's all about low-rev torque. Pulls like a train from just off idle. Rarely ever need to exceed 2000 rpm. Pretty quiet but finds its voice once it's warmed up. Then the exhaust note is positively Wagnarian. Great car.
@ahemgee9542
@ahemgee9542 2 жыл бұрын
It actually exceeds in the mid range - max torque is form 2650- 4500 rpm and max power is near the redline, developed at 6100. To simply describe it as a low rev Torquey engine is a big discredit.
@okeyezeilo6187
@okeyezeilo6187 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahemgee9542 Of course, it also has plenty of torque in the midrange and further up. And yes, it does have lots of power at the top end. My point is that at the time it came out there were few cars with its level of torque at very low revs. This differentiated it from virtually everything else at the time. Mine pulls effortlessly from just off idle accompanied by that peerless bass rumble nobody does better than AMG. In summary, I know that power is available up top, but my driving style is to surf on the torque at lower revs while delivering rampant performance that few can match...

@@okeyezeilo6187 I don't get the point of driving this below 2000rpm, might as well get a 4-cylinder if that's the case. I've been driving an E55 for some time and have been using it for cruising extra-urban and highway roads. It feels best in the 2500-4000 range when I'm passing people effortlessly while listening to its beautiful grunt.

You really hit the nail on the head. If I’m going to the track or really hitting the twisties I wouldn’t be taking a sedan to begin with. I’ve always found the M cars to be a bit confused rather than jacks of all trades. But if I’m going to drive a high-HP sports sedan/luxury autobahn stormer I’d take AMG over M all day every day.

Interesting review and comparison between this and the E60 M5. I've owned both, and still own the M5. The E55 was a good car, but for something with such soft suspension it really crashed and banged over bumps. It is the only car I have ever owned that I have managed to crack an alloy wheel. It was comfortable over long trips and the supercharger really helped it hustle along. Mine was tuned to 520bhp with over 630lbft of torque and you knew it when you stamped on the throttle, especially at slow speeds. The gearboxes are tough but dimwitted and slow. The 7G box was faster but seemingly not up to the task of the torque these things are capable of. Did make a nice noise as well, and it was faster than my M5, but the fact I sold my E55 to buy an M5 speaks volumes. I would have another, but it would need to be another 805 build car (which this car looks to be, and so was mine) and in a colour other than silver. Mine had the Pano roof which was nice to have, despite its creaks and rattles. 16 spark plugs is novel. Some of the other common faults are the charge cooler pump failing and gearbox electrics. My old one had a replacement box fitted at some point before my ownership. Rust can can get these as well. And why an 805 build car? They're put together a bit better than the 804 build ones. In my ownership it needed 2 engine mounts, gearbox mount and was going to need a new air strut. The SBC module for the brakes can only be reset once before you need a new module. The brakes while large and 6 pot do feel very wooden. The thing for me was its image. Everyone who saw it took no time at all to tell me that it looked like a taxi. My M5 is more frenetic, but I find it relaxed driving at normal speeds. It feels more special by virtue of the V10. I wouldn't own any other E60 5 series because without the V10 they're just a normal car, much like the W211 E class really. Without the M113k it is just a taxi. I don't think you can go wrong with either car if you buy wisely. You just need to remember that neither are your basic German saloon and come with high maintenance costs. Oh and Jay, sorry, but I aren't letting you get away with the interior comment LOL. The W211 dash board is shocking.

@@liamcastro-wilkins3018 so five months in I’m still happy with it but realistically it is still an older vehicle and you will absolutely be spending money on it. Most of what I’ve done so far has been deferred maintenance but there are a few issues to solve. If you are happy to spanner on it yourself then I wouldn’t be put off, but with your eyes open expect to have a similar experience. Bear in mind with these comment I have very high standards for cars. I bought it knowing I needed to do the rear brakes (pads and discs £110) and a supercharger belt (£20) + tyres (£650) But i’ve ended up also doing the front pads and discs too, (£180) then 4x brake hoses (£50), rear boot lock motor (£250) and a brake disc shield (£180 😳) I have also have an airmatic issue I believe is a rear level sensor (£60), I think there is a parking sensor issue as well and my fuel door won’t lock when the car is locked (£10 for the motor but haven’t fitted it yet) I also have a range of other fault codes I’m working through, (all small things, sensor and the like) and at one point a battery drain although I haven’t experienced that since… Best advice I can give is to get it inspected carefully by a specialist, particularly rear arches and the ‘shelf’ by the front towers (visible above the front wheel when airmatic at full height). Also definitely get a code reader on it for some money off, there will always be faults stored. Make sure SBC pump, airmatic struts/compressor have been replaces in the past. All being said I still have no regrets, it’s a cool rare car and none of the bills have been scary as all DIY, I’ve spent money on a few aesthetic items too (broken trim, clips etc £140) as well as spending a weekend cavity waxing and clear waxing the underside. £100. I’m also planning to have a few bits of bodywork done and a wheel refurb (~£1500) Performance is monstrous, fuel economy is just about acceptable (20-24mpg) and I love the look and how stealth it is - I only wanted a wagon. Just want to get everything tip-top and enjoy it now. I hope you’ve not been put off, let me know if you pull the trigger - cheers.

@@adogmcdizzle really appreciate the detailed feedback, thank you. Costs aren't as eye-watering as you'd expect for a car of this age and performance, real testament to the engine and chassis. Was expecting worse than 20-24mpg so that's a bonus, you don't buy one of these for economy but always good to know! Won't be making any decision for a little while yet, but one of these is definitely a possibility, B7 RS4 is also on the list too. Both cars I loved when they first came out and only liked more as the years have gone by!

@@liamcastro-wilkins3018 yeah man, get them while you still can! Values are pretty low as they don’t get the recognition of the Audi/BMW equivalents. The parts prices are surprisingly good for some items (main dealer price for front disks £120!) and bad for other things, but compares favourably vs the alternatives. Main thing for me is that the engines are solid, most of the things that go wrong would affect a Diesel E-class as well, like airmatic/SBC, but then you would be throwing money at a diesel which will depreciate to £0 instead of a modern classic that will always be valued. I think you would be more likely to spend money on a diesel one actually considering how many diesels have injector/turbo/EGR issues, which are all big money to fix (not to mention annoying to DIY). I’ve man-maths my way into a 17-year old 5.4 S/C German exec car 🤣🤣🤣

My dad had an S211 E55 when I was younger and I absolutely loved it, the sound is to die for! Interesting point about parts prices though, didn't know the brake discs were so cheap from MB themselves! But I'm sure other prices can be at eye-watering costs, as expected for AMG ownership.

@@tylercouture216 it really doesn't. A low miles car that may have had little use is just as likely to need money spending on it as a higher miles car in regular use, if not more. Perishable items tend to perish quicker with less use. You do know that cars don't explode at 100k miles, don't you?

For £21,000 I'd want the proper UK number plate on the front and a new Euro spec boot lid. Luverly car though.

Power = 476 PS????? For anyone from the uk and most other places that do horsepower: Power = 460 BHP Are you not using your native unit of measurement because Americans might watch this?

It's actually 469 BHP not 460. 476 in PS or metric horsepower .

Interesting that when you review an unreliable piece of junk you get 10,000 comments, but when you review an IMMORTAL, totally reliable car like THIS E class (of which I have owned two copies since 2916 and 2017 and they have proven the most reliable cars I have ever owned, so far (total of 13 years) you only get .. 100 comments? IN fact one of my E's is the same brilliant white. Both of mine are Diesels, whose torque of over 400 LBFT can me matched by NO petrol E, not the 350, not the 500 or 550, only the AMG 55s can come close, and I get 32-35 miles per tiny US gallon. make it 40-45 per Imperial Gallon. Not only that, the Merc has had far better fit and finish and sturdy interior trim than the Magnificent 7 E38 4.4 lt v8 I owned from 2005-2017, which was far less reliable than the mercs, AND, surprisingly, that E38 had the SAME 0-60 time as my two Es! .
