In my opinion, the fact the saddest death wasn't even a death by the creatures is just a nasty stab, Roy died because of his Diabetes, not even the fucking monsters, its like the game forced us to worry about the creatures more and forget that Roy would die if he didn't get his Insulin, out of all the deaths Caz seemed so broken at Roys death specifically, really showed his bond with Roy.

IGP was wondering why some of the men turned into mobile threats, while others remained stuck to the walls as meat moss. Me, I have to suspect that anger, itself, was a factor: Rennick lived, breathed, and crapped anger in his every line, and both Trots and Addair seem to have been really angry about politics, albeit from different sides of the spectrum. Gibbo got pretty touchy about Trots's activism at breakfast too, more so than their conversation really seemed to warrant. The main exception seems to be Muir, but the way Innes chewed him out for being careless that morning might've ticked him off a lot more than he allowed to show at the time.

Mirrors are expensive to render, basically need to render a whole second view which halves the FPS. This is changing with raytracing however, but at present most modern games don't have working mirrors. It does take a lot away from the scene though.

What's wild is that Rennick realistically exists, especially on rigs. My late grandfather worked on an oil rig in the north sea and he'd always tell me stories about people like Rennick. When the Piper Alpha exploded, a lot of company men refused to cosign on the deaths because it "cost too much".

I think this game is not just a representation of the real world but a metaphor it. Rennick is likely only trying to make a living just as everyone else, though at the expense of others; his job is to increase profits and that mindset might be what made him so bitter. The game itself is a metaphor for capitalism. The oil company exploiting its workers and environment leads to the collapse of the rig itself. The monster will destroy the rig as well as humanity if it isn’t destroyed. That’s why Caz killing the monster was a perfect ending. The lesson of the story is so obvious and clues are mentioned so many times I’m surprised no one has said anything. There’s so much more to the story but that would take an entire essay, so well done.

@@Witerally_Me I love how they made Caz so messy in that revelation too. Throughout the game you always had a sense of him trying to "fix" or more accurately run away from the problem and hoping that everything will eventually work out (him crime, his marriage, his job, escaping the rig itself, etc) even when reality tells him otherwise. Finlay telling him to "be brave" was so beautiful as he finally takes a stance to stand his ground and face reality even when it will cost him everything. GOD, what an amazing game!

Ignoring the fact it’s an incredible story, for someone like me, from the west of Scotland, finally hearing a game in my language, my accent, hearing words that only people from my home will know, it’s the first time a game has been truly immersive. I done an offshore safety course many years ago with a view to working on the rigs. This game reminds me so much of that (even though we never got onto the rigs, there were several emergency scenarios set up in the place we trained in and I saw a few similar here) I think, when you’re American or even English, you hear your accent and dialect so often you don’t think about it as much but playing a game, no matter how good, and hearing the sane American accents just tears you out of the immersion the developers are trying to create so this, for me, in my accent, with my dialect and with words in our language that are purely ours, and in an industry that has been a bedrock of our society for so long… It’s just so amazing, so breathtaking

The fact that you can see your character breath throughout the game but then at the end when you’re in the house you’re no longer breathing. And again in the crew lounge with the darts tournament foreshadowing the last two crew mates to die, Brodie and finlay.

The setting for this game is absolutely perfect. You get the eerie atmosphere of a rough ocean with little light and nothing but fog all around, plus the creepiness of an oil rig where everything is metal and falling apart, plus the fact that even if you try to run- you're stuck on a floating hunk of metal and completely at the will of the ocean around you. It's brilliant.

I've never watched Neebs so I'm not familiar with him doing it but again, it's not some editing breakthrough or anything. I actually got the idea to try stuff like this while watching shows and getting a look into how the sound design works. Always wondered about how they get the voices to sound so fitting in the rooms and I leaned about how actors go into the studio to records dubs after filming if the in-field audio is too noisy. And I just thought one day to try it out and I loved the result. And now it's just super fun trying to get the audio to fit every environment. I even tried recording my own convolution reverb impulses to use in my videos but they never turn out great lmao

If he was mad, it was probably mad in a light-hearted manner. I'm about half way through this video, and I have to say, the video game voice acting is amazing indeed. I love it. But dude, The volume on your voice is perfect. The subtle effects on your voice (can hear it resonate in some sections, and clear in others) are amazing. I normally watch no commentary videos for the simple fact that most creators make themselves the center of attention with their voice volume drowning out the video game, or their reactions being over the top. This playthrough feels genuine, like I'm just experiencing the game sat next to a friend on the couch. It feels like you've made the video game the center of attention, and by doing that, you've become the center. While this obviously doesn't have the right scenery/setting to teach people about scottish culture, it's so nice to hear actual scottish accents, slang and conversations that isn't done by someone who's got a distant cousin three times removed on their mothers side somewhere in scotland. Been watching IGP for years now; Your content never fails to entertain me. Never can go wrong with "snacks" and a couple of videos from IGP; Altough i doubt that was a good idea for this video in particular. Your content is amazing

Imma be honest, this game is such a roller coaster of emotions, my favorite character had to be Caz and Roy because of the incredible bond between them two is insane, when I heard Caz start to break down because of Roy's death, imma be honest.....I cried a bit throughout my playthrough of the game. This game HAS to be one of my favorite horror games of all time I freaking LOVED the game design and just how the game was overall and GOD the setting is fucking creepy as shit LOL this game truly is a masterpiece, holy SHIT......and IGP if you see this I've been here watching your vids for sometime now anyways. This game was SO amazing to play and watch someone play it as well, if you had a member option I would gladly pay for that, I love your vids man and I hope you have an amazing day/night.

2:04:08 “Lab Samples” would be perfectly normal on an oil rig, nothing sus about it. Pretty much all oil and gas extraction facilities, on land or rigs at sea, will have a “lab” to some degree or another. They have to have ways to verify that they are in fact extracting oil and gas of whatever specific chemical makeup the rig is extracting for. You drill a hole in the earth, under the ocean or not, you’re gonna be pulling out more than oil. It then needs to be “filtered” and processed into a usable product to be taken off site. Even crude unrefined oil has significant processing from extraction to the point it can be sold at market. Just goes to show just how in depth the devs researched this, and how perfectly they recreated a real rig for this. Nothing, save for the obvious eldritch horror, is out of place, or doesn’t make real world sense

It could also be a marine life and seabed analysis lab! It is obvious that a lab would exist

I wonder if they actually contacted some oil rig workers, or if they just did really good research.

You can tell why Rennick hates him, he's supposed to be on the rig to lay low but he's obviously spent the past few weeks or months rubbing Rennick up the wrong way.

Even if this is your first time watching IGP, you can tell he's a father with how much the opening cutscene broke his heart. You can tell he was imagining it was his own children asking him to come home from the oil rig.

@IGP at around 50:00 when he was talking about "I didn't mean too" and "I keep seeing his face" it was Gibbo saying that he was infected and is still concious but is not in control of his own actions and is now huanted by the fact he just killed his own freind.

Holy shit I love everything about this game, but there is something particularly beautiful about how heavily they translate Scottish in the subtitles. Entire sentences translated. What a work of art, though. The world-building, dialogue, voice acting, and god it's beautiful.

The tension winches you released means this is a TLP, or Tension-leg platform. Those cables are what connect the rig to the seafloor. The rig itself is floating on pontoons. Releasing those winches allowed the rig to float higher in the water and buy you time. Funny side note, this game is set in 1975. The first real-world TLP wasn't completed until 1984 (That platform was interestingly enough also in the North Sea, and was built in Scotland)

Hmm... I looked it up, and the first prototype TLP was built in 1974 off California. It was only a test model; the first to actually be used for drilling indeed came 10 years later. Maybe Cadal skipped the testing phase and rushed one directly into operation in the fictional 'verse of the game?

My God dude…… this game really hit me in the feels. I clicked for the body horror monster and to hopefully get an explanation of what it was at the end of the game, but the story was so masterfully told that it made me forget about all that. And the voice acting, oh my, the voice acting. I’ve never heard such authentic sounding accents before. Everyone involved in the making of this game should be proud, it’s a masterpiece of emotional storytelling and horror. I hope they make a sequel where we find out what the flesh is and where it came from.
