Lol "expert" use that term very loosely. i know just enough to get myself into trouble. looking forward to throwing some dirt around with it buddy. Happened to have stumbled across a 22b shovel the other week so i think you need to plan another road trip and you can help me load up some new toys as well.

My uncle learned to run heavy equipment as a combat engineer during WWII. When he came home, he went to work for a road building company and did that til his late 70's. He always said running a drag line was one of his favorite things to do although he could operate anything the company had. I guess everybody has their favorite piece of equipment they like best.

22B with a D318 is what I learned in close to 50 years ago. Having run a Koehring with a 471 I personally can’t imagine repowering it with a Jimmy. The Jimmy is so loud while the D318 just loafs along with it with enough power that the governor hardly has to open up, much easier on the ears, to each his own. I hope to buy the machine I learned in some day, it’s about 40 miles from home. Good to see Frank. We always ran 40 feet of stick with a 1 yard Hendrix bucket with more counterweight than you have on that machine. I have another counterweight for a 22B I might part with if you should need more counterweight. Have fun with it!

That old dragline excavator still has a lot of life left in it. It just needs some TLC and some money spent on it. I have faith in your ability to get it back in good running condition and ready to show off. This machine is in a lot better condition than the other one you looked at. All things considered I think you made an excellent purchase.

Hi Mike. Where I worked as an mechanic/engineer in the early 1980's we had one on the fleet for river dredging work. I had the job one year of total engine strip and build, new crank even, also all the clutches replaced almost a total refurb of the machine.. Cat powered and was it nice to see someone use it who could almost make music out of it. I for sure cant wait for you to complete the restoration and start having fun on it. Just a thought though might like to cover the exhaust and air intake over against the rain/snow etc, as I noticed the air cleaner was off leaving a large hole ready to drink water and if the exhaust is not covered and has its mouth open to the sky, water will run down and into the cylinders and that is costly for sure. Hope you do not mind that warning as you more than likely have already addressed the issue. Have fun and wait for all updates. Stay safe and well.

What an added bonus, already in working order, with loads of parts and looking at the body work all it needs is a good clean, doesn't even need a paint job. If you get to use it on a few jobs, it will also pay for itself so what's not to like. Its a pity the guys skid steer wasn't for sale, that must have been one of the originals.

I drove the British version of the 22 and it had RB after the twos. This stood for Ruston Bucyrus. It was used mainly as a yard crane on a tube project in London. Though I did some dragline work loading muck away tipper trucks with tunnel blue clay, if those drivers didn't stop in the correct loading spot, I'd drop a little muck on the cab roof. The engines were Ruston single cylinder engines and multi cylinder banks could be made up, yer and sometimes in winter swapping from crane mode to track travel took a bit of fiddling. But I liked the old girl, there was so much feel in a machine with hoist and winch brakes. Went onto drive an Allen Grove truck mounted crane she to have a winch drum, very unusual on a truck crane of the time. Again, an Anglo/US partnership that ended up just Grove. Good luck getting yours up and running as you like it. Thanks for posting and giving this old man some memories back.

Mikey… that’s a find! I love old shovels and drag lines. When I was young, my dad took me on a short trip over the state line to a strip mining coal operation. His brother had a job as a mechanic for Big Brutus. It was the largest electric shovel in the world. It weighed 1.1 million pounds and could load 90 yards or 150 tons per scoop! I was impressed as it loaded coal cars with just one scoop. The Earth shook as it ripped scoops out of the coal seam before it. Although it isn’t in production today, it does still operate as a National Historic landmark… the museum has several demonstrations each year. While we were watching it run, I asked my uncle, “Why is it called Buckey Russ Erie?” He smiled and told me, “Boo Cyrus Erie is the company that made it!” To this day, the first thing that runs through my mind is… “Don’t say Buckey Russ!” Mikey… I can’t wait to have my picture taken with it the next time I am in town!

Nice find, and for almost scrap price it is very decent. The “thing” for the grapple is a tagline winder, because the cable is called the tagline. The Hendrix bucket looks almost new, but getting new teeth is hard and expensive, I know there are users that exchanged the original teeth and holder for Caterpillar bucket teeth. They are much cheaper and easy to buy new, when you ran in to this problem Aaron got himself a nice welding job. But it probably takes you years to wear them down, just keep it in mind.

Drove a 22RB (Ruston Bucyrus) dragline on the Haast Road project in NZ in 1964/65. Looks to be the same as this one. Certainly same colour. Had to drive it up temporarily access roads with grades over 20%. Often had to adjust the clutch up part way up the hill as machine was never designed for that sort of work. I can still smell the burnt clutch plate smell. Have photos of it somewhere.

I owned one of those. To steer it I would push the lever to lock one side with my foot as you move forward. There’s a slide that fits into dogs that lock the chain drive. I would just lock one side and go forward or backwards to turn. You can also throw some wood blocks in front of the track you want to lock to turn. Best of luck with it. I had a 6 cyl. Cummins in mine.

My first dragline was link belt LS98 (63’) 1-1/2 yd bucket with 55’ boom, had the 471 Detroit and did she screamed and was great on fuel. Sure could sling the spoils. I never need to work out at the gym as I was plum tired after good days run! Can’t wait to see run.
