The Car Care Nut Reviews

Күн бұрын

In This video we look at one of the WORST Dodge models to buy. A 2009 Dodge Caliber with a 2.0L engine.
This car is often found for sale for a much lower price than those Japanese counterparts of the same year and style. And that is for a good reason.
If you're ever in the market to buy one, please skip this one especially if you live in the rust belt with salt use in the streets in the winter. They really rust very badly.

As a Chrysler tech. These do have oil leak issues, valve covers, timing cover, and oil pans. Also may have some surging feeling when spark plugs are getting worn. Feels like if trans is surging but this is caused by worm spark plugs. Recommend to change every 30k. This is was colobration work between hyuidai, chrysler, and mitsubishi. Hyundai also used a 2.4 varient of this engine too. That cover that covers the battery is a air intake duct. If it's removed and not put back you may get induction noise, it has happened to me. The cvt is a Jatco design. Same manufacturer that makes nissan cvt. These transmission are very delicate. What most people fail to do is do trans service by the maintenance schedule of 60k. The oil this cvt uses degrades fast after 50k which causes trans oil to foam up and cause trans to overheat. I have seen some cvt last long time but only because customer do there trans service on time. Suspension is not the greatest, and may also have some electrical issues like throttle bodies going bad and tipm module going bad. It's also true chyrsler does not make reliable small cars. There trucks, subs, and large size sedans are better. I have a 2003 ram 5.7 with 360,000 miles. Still has original trans, engine was replaced at 305000 due to oil consumption and it broke a valve spring. So with maintenance most cars can be reliable.

I have a question from one mechanic to another. I just bought a 2008 dodge Caliber sxt with a 2.0 with 70,510 miles on it and want to change the transmission fluid and filters but I'm getting mixed reactions from people. So with 16 year old fluid some say it will start slipping after I do so but this thing is dry as a bone everywhere. It was used as a small town code enforcement vehicle so it had more idle time than drive time suggestions would be great. Still shifts great and everything works

I owned a 2010 jeep patriot. Its basically a dodge caliber underneath. Seeing that caliber engine bay brings back memories. It broke down a lot after 5 years of ownership. All the struts were replaced. Wheel bearings, control arms also replaced. Alternator replaced twice. I got it to more than 100k miles. I traded it in for a toyota last year after it won't crank or start. It had to be towed to the mechanic. The mechanic said it's related to the ecu. I spent a lot of money getting it fixed hoping each time would be the last but some times you should know when to move on.

I bought a 2006 dodge charger RT brand new and am still driving it. It runs like a champ and hasn’t really given me problems. The only thing I replaced that was somewhat expensive was the radiator, cooling fans, and alternator. When I first got it everyone made fun of me because it’s a “dodge” so they are surprised I’m still driving and it.

AMD, at least this car’s battery is not hidden in the driver’s side wheel well like older Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Sebring. I remember working on my father’s old Sebring’s battery. I made sure to replace it with a sealed type. When I learned about the 2.7 L V6 engine it had, I talked him into getting rid of it and he got a 2007 RAV4.

Hello from Europe - Greece. I bought the dodge caliber 1.8 petrol manual transm;ition brand new back in 2008 and it still runs like new . It has 150.000 km and the only fail was a flywheel sensor that cost about 20 euros that took 5 minutes for the car service to fix. No leaks , no breaks , no stalling , no bad batteries , NO rust . Good suspension . The 150 horse power is more than enough , considering the very low fuel consumption (around 7,5 liters per 100 km) . I watched the video carefully and i could not see any major fails for that old car (man you comment the battery cover as useless and you didn't see that its actualy an air-scoop for the airfilter obx intake) . I intend to keep it for meny more years , as long it last in the same todays good working condition. Stay up with the manuals servicing program and everything will be ok. Anyway i sudjest to anybody that likes this model , to try and check it for themselfes , with a mechanic that they trust. Cheers

Good video. The CVT transmission in that car is manufactured by JATCO. (Japanese automatic transmission company) Nissan, Subaru, Audi, BMW, as well as Chrysler Corporation bought their CVT’s from them to name just a few. These transmissions are a “real problem child”. Many of them fail as early as 40,000 miles. Extremely light duty, problematic and very expensive to replace.. buyer beware!

I love the car driving wise she is decent but like you said in your video If I would have done my research a little more before getting my car I probably would have went with something different lesson learned I live in a place where it gets extremely cold and the salt/sand off the roads is so bad for rusting everything on my car. I’d say it is either luck or maintenance. I own a 2010 caliber sxt with 79k miles on it and so far only major issues that had to be replaced is AC compressor and alternator. Leaving that aside, it’s been a nice daily driver. No oil or any other fluid related leaks, transmission is doing ok by now. Like I said, it is either bad luck were you get a defective car or you give no maintenance to it.

Just came across this. I had to laugh a little. I purchased a 2004 Chrysler Sebring limited 2.7 V6 automatic. It had a few leaks. However; we had that car 18 years. Just sold it two months ago. It was never really a daily driver just a second car for my wife to run her errands in. At the time of sale it still only had 96,000 miles on it. I wasn't expecting much for it. But was offered 3k. We did take good care of it and it was garage kept. Replaced with the Civic sport touring after watching your review on that thank you. Also note, you were the only person to mention anything about carbon build up on DI engines. That was huge. Thank you for being completely forthcoming and honest in you reviews.

I strongly remember these in my days in rental. This was my 2nd most hated car, the first is another Chrysler product. Why did I hate it? Immediately because I'm not tall, I suspect AMD is taller than I am, there is a oversized bowl under the steering wheel, it's made of hard plastic and most of the time I get out of this thing I bruise my right leg because I sit closer to the front. So yes a car that frequently harms me I develop hate for it. Even when new this car wasn't reliable. Chrysler in this era had constant electrical issues often because the control modules were absolute crap. For new cars at that time they were the least reliable. If I was going to not make it back...it was a Chrysler product that was 95% most likely to fail, GM was like 4% and basically everyone else fills the remaining 1%. They were also awful to drive. Caliber was a CVT which made certain driving aspects worse like awful noises. Not comfortable, crap stereo, loose steering, slow and they all hated corners. This isn't even when they got older, I only experienced them new. I didn't know about the rust problems. I actually assumed they failed mechanically. I fully agree with the don't buy, note the Caliber was mechanically the same as the Jeep Compass and Patriot, everything AMD and I have said directly applies to those piles as well. I personally go even further, don't buy any Chrysler product from 2006 to at least 2014. Don't buy any Journey. Don't buy any Patriot. Don't buy the Compass until at least after 2017. If you must buy a Chrysler product in this time period the Ram was the least crappy.

@@ttampi they completely redid the Compass for 2018. So none of the issues that plague the old one like the CVT or any of the Daimler Chrysler issues like electronic modules are relevant. That newer one is Fiat based so any issues are completely different. From what I can tell the FCA Chryslers at least hold up longer initially and have much nicer interiors than the very lousy ones of the Daimler Chrysler era. The only FCA car I know was bad is the Dart with the turbo engine and for that one it's the turbos themselves.

I purchased one of these when they first came out in 2007. In general, I liked the car and I bought it with the Sport package of which I liked the appearance. The suspension was very cheaply made. The tie rod ends just made it past the warranty and the front control arm bushings didn't last much longer even though the car had very low mileage. I also had to replace the brakes after only three years because of noise issues although there was lots of brake material left. I could see that it was a poor quality vehicle and if it had an engine or transmission problem it would not be worth fixing. I decided to sell it at a very reasonable price and buy another vehicle. Thank you for the review.

A 2007 Dodge Caliber R/T. Only had like 90k miles on it, but it squeaked and had a ton of rust. I had sold it, and on the way home, I got rear-ended, which totaled it.

Hard to get away from rust up north. I’m not 100% sure rust-proofing the underbody makes a huge difference. Those chemicals get slung everywhere in every nook and cranny in the winter and eventually everything is going to rust. Some cars are definitely worse than others and Dodge/Chrysler products are some of the worst I’ve seen.

MY Dodge Caliber SXT was made in May 2009 and I bought it in April 2010. I finally sold it in Sept 2023 when it was 14 1/2 years old. When I bought this car the professional reviewers did not like it, but the people who had bought it, LOVED it. I listened to the people who owned it and I am VERY glad I did !

I have a 2007 with 238,000 miles on it. My husband took very good care of it. We lived in the Midwest so Ofcourse the cross members and subframe are rusting out. Dodge didn’t put out a recall, but allowed owners 10 years to have it replaced. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize until well after 2017 so… there are also issues with valve cover & vent tube that need replaced, but after spending $1400 on front struts and steering issues, I didn’t want to dump anymore into it. Dodge even says i can expect to get 200,000 miles out of it. I guess my husband got his monies worth.

It's worth noting that aside from being made in a Chrysler plant, almost nothing on these is originally sourced from Chrysler. The engine is a Hyundai design, the transmission is Jatco, the platform is Mitsubishi, and the management during the designing was Daimler/Mercedes.

i have caliber 2007 and lived in texas. it has close to 250,000miles and still drive ok. didnt experienced much problems with it. corrosion? i dont think i have it. yes i changed alot for maintenance, close to fail or failed. its runs good but not like when its new. its slower than before, noisy, and rough riding. i think its a good buy. im considering getting a new one, chevy trax 2rs is contender. buick version is on my list and dodge hornet(if they only lower the price ill get it).

The Caliber was discontinued ten years ago. I know my wife bought one a 2012 and it is a garage queen with 11,000 miles. A year after my wife bought the car she had to stop driving so the queen resides in the garage with the battery disconnected. Once every month or so I go out and start it and e very six months or so I change the oil, start it up and drive it. I hate that POS but the wife likes it but finally this year I took all the insurance off except comprehensive. .

To be completely fair. Everything you said is true. But the engines themselves are pretty decent. I modified my 1.8 SXT manual transmission to the point it hit fuel cut and never had issues with the block. The biggest thing to look for if you buy one of these is a whining CVT transmission, ensuring it has had the dealer recall completed on the suspension. And if it is an SRT-4 there are many other things to look for. I love the SRT-4 despite the issues I expected having owned previous calibers. If you find one that has been well treated, and has had the subframe replacement completed they are fairly reliable vehicles. I have cranked my SRT4 to about 360whp at the moment and it has taken the torque like a Queen. Buy the manual edition if you get one of these

AMD, Do you have a skilled and steadfast exorcist 'cleanse' your garage after these possessed vehicles leave? 😂BTW I would not want the younger generation to believe Dodge/Chrysler etc always made terrible products. You only have to go back 50 years or so to find some pretty competitive products coming from their factories. I will put it on the record that if I time traveled back to 1972, a Plymouth Valiant with a Slant 6 engine would be on the top of my 'affordable & reliable' car shopping list.

I've read the Caliber has been problematic, but but we have a 2007 Caliber RT with the 2.4 L that has 195 K. It has been a decent car. No rust at all in North Carolina. The issue we have had is control arms and ties rods along with the engine mounts wearing out. In 2007 Dodge gave us a lifetime powertrain warranty that has repaired 2 oil leaks. Overall it has been a good car, but I do agree that these have CHEAP interior and can be problematic. I'm a DIY person so I can replace or repair most issues that arise with it.

This is either a pre-bankruptcy unit or a one manufactured right at the bankruptcy time. The 💩hit the fan for CJD in 2009. Shortly before it happened, ChryCo was cutting corners bumper-to-bumper. Don't believe me? Just look at this unit. My former coworker drove one of these Calibers up until 2014. After having it towed off the company parking lot for the sixth time, he got a new Camry and never looked back.

Thank you for this video, it's very informative and useful. Did an oil and filter change for a friend today and noticed a slight weeping under the hydraulic transmission gearbox. I told my friend about it and recommend checking the fluid level and a top up if necessary. He asked if I could do it, and I was willing to oblige. However, I could not find a dipstick. I found what appears to be a dipstick tube under the air intake which is located over the battery, but no dipstick in it. I'm assuming that will be where you Top up the fluid level, but what will be the point if you can't check the level? On another video that I checked out, it said that's a Main dealer job only. I did say to my friend that I thought the car was a nice design, and that I liked it, but I've changed my mind, particularly after having watched your video. Thanks for what you do, much appreciated.
