Shmee150's Porsche 914 really is a financial disaster! This classic car is hiding all sorts of bad repairs and lots and lots of filler! Unbelievable amounts of filler. We are on the road to restoring this abandoned project and didn't expect to see this!
We are at the stage now where the paint needs to go and we need to see what metal fabrication we need to do to straighten the car. Not only is it crash damaged, but it is also bent like a banana. This may have been why this classic was abandoned as a project, and this, along with the crazy amounts of filler is why this is a financial disaster. Nothing we can't sort though!

Back in the 60's before most of you were born, a magazine called Car and Car Conversions i think, took a good looking Ford Consul circa1960, and stripped it. The result was the car folded in the centre, the entire structure having been made by filler. In those pre test days it was common practice....and the results were horrific. Ever since then, i always preffered to buy rot i could see, then repair it. This brings back the devious minds of some people with no scruples. Nice content though.

I was going to comment that it is a good thing they clamped the car to the jig before they started work! Because some of that filler might be structural.

Reminds me of my Uncle’s old crash repaired Mini, he was too skint to get it repaired properly so used tonnes of papier mache and hammerite. what I don't understand is the metal doesn't look terribly off - why the gallons of body filler? Like the patch attempts were horrible - but there weren't that many. (on the exterior. The interior is a nightmare.)

I think they are mainly focusing on the corrosion they are seeing, who ever did the body work and paint on it previously didn’t replace the door skins or the sheet metal they just put filler over the rust and painted over it.

I AM NEARLY 60 and for 30 years i repaired and restored cars .tbh! i have seen this so many times . my tip of the day to anyone buying an old car especialy one that looks good take a magnet with you if that magnet don't stick to the best looking bit's walk away . i once had a poor guy in my garage with a 1971 vw camper that he had just bought it looked ok ! from a distance [ nice and shiney ] he told me the seller just had a 4 k respray . THIS OLD VW BUS HAD plaster'es edge beading hammerd to a rough shape and i si""t you not cement / underbody seal for a main chassy and the body remined me of this day i had to tell the poor guy he had just bought the most expensive polished freaking lemon on earth . . the saddest thing to be honest was the thing had a flooked engine [ it ran in 3 of the 4 cylinders but i never had the heart to tell him . I JUST GAVE HIM A WRITTEN REPORT 3 A4 SHEATS LONG . and told him to take it back . 2 weeks later this guy returned to my garage and gave me a bottle of johnywalker black label .

That is a car that should be acid dipped to remove everything that isn't steel. Rust, bondo, paint, everything. Don't know if they have such a facility in the UK, but having owned a '61 and '63 Mini, they need one!! Good luck with the repairs. I've been watching Colin's BMW and it looks terrible...this is worse. Keep wearing the safety gear!!

Dipping them strips all the protection from seams.. causes mayhem as you can't fully protect the seams afterwards which rust starts bleeding from.. sandblasting is far better as long as the person doing it knows about sandblasting cars

@@Mahalo_83It’s typical when someone just must be noticed but has no technical expertise to add. It’s gotten quite common in videos from lawn mowing to setting a mouse trap. I haven’t checked in this case but almost always they have no content at all -in fact they often have no skills but to beat on what’s obvious to those who do. The big giveaway is that the safety comments come whether the video shows the use of PPE or not. It’s trolling but they would say, “I’m just trying to help!”. Kudos to the team. At first I thought this car didn’t look too bad but, boy, what a mess! I suspect a 914 in our family will need similar attention.

Hey Ryan, yet another rusty rabbit hole that you are taking us down. I find it amazing that a car like that was roadworthied at all, how unsafe for the occupants. You guys do brilliant work, it’s a pleasure to see. Scheme needs some financial compensation from the seller. Your are not leaving much for tha sand blaster, I would be worried that it will blow apart, that would make a stunning video. I agree with others about the dust collection. I have a large vacuum dust collector for my woodwork hobby. Attached to that is a big mouth Shute so I imagine that you could have one mounted on a stand that you move nearby to suck the dust rather than putting the health of everyone at risk when the shop is to be cleaned, you’re handling the crap a few times now. What a journey, thanks for sharing.

At today's prices, most people simply couldn't afford that much filler on just one car. I'm also concerned at the condition of some of the metal surface under the filler, as it doesn't appear to have been appropriately treated beforehand. What a mess, not to mention lugging all that extra weight around. Looking forward to seeing this repaired properly, the way it should have been done the first time.

I had a 914-6 for many years. It had a bit of rust; they all do, I ended up bending it when I used the jacking point to work on the brakes. I jacked the car up and crunch! A family of mice had made a home under the rocker! I ended up getting it bent back to shape on a jig and welded by one of two; ... that's right two people who could really do this in the US at the time; .. apparently. The shifting of these cars is so compromised it ruins the driving experience. I have no idea how they raced them. For me it was not worth restoring, although its modded OEM engine had 210hp and was pretty fun. I sold it, it went to Hong Kong and I DON'T miss it. I had a 930 and laterly a '71T .. both more enjoyable

This is why you always take a small magnet with you to test the panels for filler on an older car That is the worst thing I have ever seen in my life 😮😮😮

Wow that's crazy. Half that car is just filler.

I cant believe you dont sand in a more closed environment. That garage, and everything in it, must be covered in horrible fine dust!

Prior to the bodywork the 914/4 cylinder weighed 940 kg / 2,094 lbs. After the paint and body work it weighed 1133 kg, 2500 lbs. .LOL

I'm just trying to imagine the effect of all that extra weight of the filler on the vehicle's performance! 🤣Utterly insane!!

The guy who sculpted patches out of Bondo is a true artist. From what I understand he left the body shop to pursue his love of frosted cakes.. Hà ha

Acid dip. saves hours and removes filler in a shorter period of time. The bit that gets me is that someone down the line paid huge bucks for a 'high quality' restoration and paint and got totally turned over.

If whoever did that repair had done it right the first time round, it would have been cheaper in the long run. Man hours working all that mud and the cost for the filler it would have had less time and labor cost. I've seen work like that done here in the states. It's been a while but I've seen whole wings made out of the stuff and very little metal.

As per other comments.. my god, get a vacuum system... yes, you have a mask on, but the other guys in the same space dont ... this is just horrific for lungs! Btw, absolutely love the channel! Just please look into proper dust management 🙏

I would rather see a bad weld than filler over rust and holes. And then those panels don't look bad, only the repairs - well hidden holes really. So why not just fix those repairs and simply build up a high fill primer instead. Bizarre.
