Back in the '60's I owned a VW split-window that, interestingly, I named Solar! It held up to 10 people and it usually consumed no fuel whatsoever. However, it did require three people or six stoners to push it . . . or was it three stoners or six people? Wait a minute, I didn't own it, I pushed it; hmmmm, wonder whatever happened to Bob . . .

Well, I can't be sure but there was a guy who called himself Bob, but he always pronounced his name backwards, so who knows? A long time ago someone told me he was living in Jerome, AZ, but I dreamed he was in Quartzsite, AZ so I suspect he's there . . . but again, who knows?

What town is he in? With all that flat area I would have hung 3 times more solar. There appears to be a voltage mismatch from solar panels to charge controllers/battery bank. stepping up voltage is less efficient. To maximize solar our farm panels track the sun.

Great ride, I would recommend getting some used tesla s battery modules on ebay and replacing those lead banks (18650 or 26650>lead). You can source out a totaled BMW i3 for $4-7k usd and harvest the motor for awd also the batteries and regen brakes, maybe the climate control system and parking sensors as well if it's all in good condition. High potential for this vehicle!!!! Videos likes this gives me faith in mankind.
@Hyperious_in_the_air
@Hyperious_in_the_air 5 жыл бұрын
I used Nissan Leaf modules in my motorcycle build. IMO for this build they'd probably work better since he's at a lower voltage and is pulling more amps than a Tesla module is rated for. Leaf modules will do up to 500a continuous.
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 5 жыл бұрын
Right, spend $20,000 to hire an engineer to design it so it does not blow up in your face or burn up regen components. No advantage, a decided disadvantage. There is NO potential for sustainability in a vehicle this large and heavy, it is just a hobby that will soon be taxed into oblivion. Fully sustainable vehicles weigh no more than 1000 pounds and go no faster than 40 mph. They do not require the extremely over built road infrastructure we now abuse to suffocate nature. The mere act of driving any vehicle up over a high mountain pass damages the high altitude fragile balance. If you love the mountains you will never go there.

This guy built it from home while VW hasn't even released an electric model van yet. There is clearly a demand for this type of thing vehicle. It would be a game changer if a van like this were released from VW or testa. I myself would buy one. Strip the inside of unnecessary parts, add a pine wood floor, frame the walls with wood/fill it it with level 2 fibreglass insulation. Cover and seal house wrap. Brad nail hemlock tongue and groove boards to make a some nice walls. BAM I got a winter proof electric home on wheels that's customizable

this thing gets like a 60 mile range and might recharge 30 in a day. This style solar panel is about 280w/m^2 with around a 18% efficiency. Talking about a kwhr under good sunlight, or 4 miles range.
@Mike-oz4cv
@Mike-oz4cv 5 жыл бұрын
My username is longer than you would expect The mileage is bad because the batteries are bad. With a 50kWh Li-Ion battery it should easily do 400km. I agree that the solar panels don’t help much. However, most camping vans already use some kind of solar panel to run the beer cooler, lights etc. So why not oversize it, especially if you have such a nice, flat surface at a perfect angle? I think the guy in the video mentioned something about 150V*8A=1.2kW of charging power. So yes, you’d need at least 4 days of perfect 10h sunshine to re-charge a 50kWh battery.

Ashok Revanna What hate? That is just pure reality and experience. They are dirty because of Dieselgate scam, which didnt ended yet. They are obsolete dinosaurs, because they are at least 10 years behind Tesla and way more years behind Toyota hybrids. They are barely slowly catching up. Even small Jaguar is quicker. They jumped on electric revolution because Dieselgate kicked them hard in the balls. Their TDi dream is almost dead especialy in USA and in Europian cities. And finally Chinese put knife on their throat so they must made electric cars for China market or they are doomed and cant sell dirty combustion engine cars there anymore. And that is bad very baaad for them because chinese market is huuuuge. Man, wake up and learn some facts before you comment. btw I already have second old VW car and I like it. And no its not a diesel ;-D

Awesome build, would be great to get a followup eventually w/ the battery upgrade. Replacing the 12 AGM batteries w/ say 200Ah Prismatic LFPs should give a good 2.5x usable power boost at about the same weight. I've also seen people selling almost-new Tesla pulled packs at almost half the price - 8 of the Tesla modules would be about 50% lighter, and give you 250Ah @ 178V nominal - you could probably get 200-250mi of range from that sort of setup.

Just imagine using more fiberglass to maybe lighten the vehicle up where possible, using better batteries that hold more energy per weight, and going to more efficient solar panels (which the technology is getting better [albeit taking a little while to get to market]). I do believe he did this more on a budget, but still turned out really good.

Wow. Man!!! You're a hell of an engineer. Congratulations. This is by far the best camper I have seen in a damned long time. I just get damned upset, when I see, that it's possible for just a few people to create such a vehicle as their private car, but it's not "possible" for big companies to do that. I love it, when some extraordinary people show, what's really possible. This is really a masterpiece. Unfortunately not everybody has the knowledge to create such a solar powered vehicle. That could probably put all these oil companies out of business. And..... as German, I am happy to see, that such an old VW-Bus ("Bullie") gets the chance of a new life.

I've owned RV's for 30 years. The idea of a solar RV is compelling. I was looking at an Ultravan and thinking about something like that. The upgrades you are planning are very intriguing. Something like the CALB 180 Lifepo, seem to have some value and the chemistry is considered 'safe'. There is a huge push for EV cells, of course, so who knows what you might find. There are some LG and Sanyo cells scrounged from hoverboards (never sold or used) around a buck a cell, 18650's, on Ebay. I've built three ebikes. I can ride them with 15 watt/hours per mile. So if you can get 45 mph and 150 wh/mi, with all the weight and poor aerodynamics, it's great. The roof design is simple, I guess, but brilliant. The whole small space looks very useable to me, though I wouldn't want to 'live' in it. i don't know if you said 1200 watts of solar, but that is a lot of energy. The efficiency numbers from 'real world' experience, comparing Lead Acid to Lithium, are all over the place. You can certainly put a lot more into lithiums, without the final charging issues. For what you are doing, it could be huge. Thanks for sharing.
@Voltaic
@Voltaic 7 жыл бұрын
the maximum is arround 200W per square meter.. and I guess he has like 1.8x4 Meter that means he has 7,4 square meters of surface and that is arround 1400W.. so this is pretty exact.. but now you need to see it realisric.. ro charge up the Bus with this Power you would need arround wait let me calculate it for you.. so assuming he has like 30kwh of power on that Bus which seems realistic considering the range that means charging the car with 1200W of power would need 24 days under best conditions.. and with the motor build in which has like 56Kw he would need to charge 45minutes for every minute of driving.. thats really inpractical:D
@geebonzo
@geebonzo 7 жыл бұрын
He says 200 wh/mi. So 50 miles x 200 wh = 10,000 wh. Solar generates 1200 watts, 1200 watt hours per hour. So 10,000/1200 = 8 hours to recharge Cruising wattage would be around 10,000

Last time I bought some Samsung batteries off ebay, they was fakes, the seller wouldn't work with me on them either so I was out some money. illumn.com is reputable and always has legit batteries. Buying in bulk, I'd say alibaba would be your best bet.

What an amazing build. As the only solar electric vehicles I've seen in the past have been those ultralight vehicles that can only race on sunny desert roads, I didn't realise something like this would be feasible, especially with relatively old mature technologies. I have a basic and small relation to this van's set-up running the power in my shed - a small PV and an old lead-acid battery - and use it only for light duty stuff like lighting, soldering, charging up phones etc. 40-50 miles range a day from solar alone? I love this van.

Electric Cars with Solar panels are coming. There is allready the plugin hybrid toyota prius with solar panels and the Sion from Sono Motors and the Lightyear one is coming this or next year. The Sion costs 26.000€ and the Lightyear one 50.000€ I think.

@advanced-electronic

Panels go up to 335 watts these days bud, so the panels could potentially be producing 1340 watts. The day of the 100 watt poly panels is long gone. If people purchase 100 watt panels, there is something wrong with them and they didn't do their research. 300 plus watt panels are shipped by the pallet for under 2 grand. Canadian Solar is one of the manufacturers where you can buy from a place off of ebay with $450 shipping from Cali. 100 watt panels are a waste of time and money, space too. If I buy, I'm going to wait until 500 watters are released, or wait until the graphene technology enables them to become much smaller. Solar paint is another up and coming technology allowing a home or car to simply be painted to generate power.
