The ZimaBlade has been designed to be a powerful, compact and energy-efficient personal server with an x86 architecture and a host of IO. This time, they’ve packed the board into a stylish Cyberpunk style case with a clear window into the internals.

Wow that power adapter is the stuff of nightmares. THANK YOU. For pointing that out. I would've learnt it the hard way.

is true that a non-compliant USB-C is unexpected and would brake a bunch of stuff. Thanks for sharing.

You made an amazing mini server rack awhile back that I loved. I would like to see if this can be added. I’m not as savvy as you all, and it may be overkill for something so small. I just really love your projects.

Great idea for a mini server. I use casaos for my jellyfin server, pihole and Syncthing for all of my backups. Works like a charm. I am using an old HP desktop as the server.

Just so you know this cant work as a nas/mini server. It only uses 3 amps and drives to start up require up to 3 amps. They dont say this but they mention it in passing in their discord. I canceld my preorder after discussing.i found it kind misleading to have a nas kit and then say well it depends on the hdd you insert.

Hi and thanks for posting the video. I considered the blade recently but opted for a Zimaboard because of its dual Ethernet ports, allowing me to use it as a gateway server to replace my existing installation of smeserver/koozali with the newer 10.1 version. The Quad core CPU on the Blade version is more desireable, however its running fine in that config and saps 6-12Watts in normal use. After viewing your video I might pick up a blade anyway to play with further.

You could always add another Ethernet port using the PCIe port if that's open on your setup?

I'm looking really hard at this. Price seems right. Good mix of upgradability and ports for expansion. Heck i already have enough ram laying around to populate it.

It's a really good option for the price and has a lot of flexibility for upgrades

Looks fun and plenty of options.. more fun though is with the case it looks like a retro "cassette walkman"!!!!! not sure on the ddr3 ram though in today's age especially when the lower powered pi comes with DDR4 (albeit non removable or upgradable) .. so be interested to see on a next iteration if they bump it to ddr4. Thanks for sharing :)

I have a laptop and would love to run PC cards! Is there something like the Zimablade SBC that allows you to plug in any type of PC card standard (ISA, PCI, PCIe/PCIex16)? I've heard that because of DMA, a USB3 to PCI is not possible, so most people use a Thunderbolt3 PCIe Expansion Chassis.. but I'm looking for a PC solution!

I like the upgrade ability about this hardware and also the different pcie options as well just I already have a media server and a pi 4 that’s running Portainer with a bunch of service maybe with the extra functionality of this board it will be able to lift the heavy load I have on my pi 4 4gb or add some redundancy
@MichaelKlements
@MichaelKlements 8 ай бұрын
Given that this board is quite a bit more powerful than a Raspberry Pi, you'd probably be fine with porting all of the services over to this board and that'll free up your Pi for a different project.

hard to say what projects to try because it won't be in anyone's hands until at the very least february of next year. i see you got the updated black pcb version. early review units were white. also, there seems to be other board computers from china starting a wave of 12v usb c... some without a proper pd regulator. for instance the higole pro needs a special third party dedicated cable which can negotiate 12v dc power on its behalf with a capable 12v dc pd power bank. I reckon the same accessories i have for that would work for this as well. another example, the khadas vim4 was a dealbreaker when i found out it is also 12v usb c and cannot get power from an ipad similar to how a raspberry pi can get power and data for a self contained setup without a power mains. lastly, the creators said there will be a zimaboard 2.0 after this. that may be the one to get since it should at least have two ethernet ports.

Trying to see how it compares to the previous ZimaBoard project. I have one of those and it's competent via at serving Plex Media Server (I have it running Ubuntu 22.04 LTS though), and the Celeron N3450 can transcode w/ QSV 480p MKVs for subtitles, but not quite strong enough to transcode 1080p for subtitle burn-in (I resort to burning them in when I rip my media). This version seems to also rely on the N3450/J3455/E3940 (whichever they can get), which are all 2016-era Atom-style CPUs. The J3455 has the highest iGPU clockspeed and the E3940 technically supports ECC RAM. The only compelling option for the ZimaBlade is the user-replaceable RAM vs the fixed RAM on the ZimaBoard (I regret only getting 2GB).

Although the ZimaBoard is a bit older, it's probably still a bit more powerful than the new ZimaBlade as this was designed to have a lower price point. The ZimaBoard runs LPDDR4 RAM while this runs LPDDR3 as well. I think the main selling point of the ZimaBlade over the ZimaBoard is the price - this board is considerably cheaper, even on the higher spec. options.

Hi Michael, when I saw your video and I started to think of this Zimablade board can be used for a pfSense installation. This with the use off a PCIE expansion Network card? Is this an idea a following video?

It looks like RPi 5 made the Zima a joke. Anyway, we will see in the next year. I run HTPC, so a low power consumption is important, but the board should be powerful enough to decode 4K videos.
@MichaelKlements
@MichaelKlements 8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure why you think that? The ZimaBlade is similarly priced and has similar features (GPIO pins aside). Even in terms of performance this was about 8 times more powerful than a Pi 4 and the Pi 5 looks to be around 2-4 times more powerful than the 4. I think they have different use cases, this is a better option for a low power home server, the Pi 5 is better for electronics projects that require the use of the GPIO pins.
