Good to hear that you mentioned Carlin Dunne. His death at Pike's Peak in 2019 was tragic and should have never happened. Caused by a severe bump right before the finish line at the top, he lost control on his way to a speed record on a Ducati Streetfighter V4. I contacted the administrators of the event a year later (2020) when they were determining if they should allow motorcycles back, and told them to fix the road at the top. Basically I got a responds informing me that the repairs falls in the hands of the City of Colorado Springs. And from the video footage of the race cars that I have seen in 2020, the bump is still there. We need a body of race officials to stand up and voice their concerns to get this section of road repaired. What does it take to keep racing in the United States safe for everyone?

Pikes Peak is Nurburgring wrapped around over 4k meters high mountain. Even though I enjoy videos and style of "gravel era" Pikes Peak more, asphalt one is still one of the most incredible "races" man can witness. Also little correction: You've constructed your sentences in the way that sounds like Audi Quattro S1 was built for Pikes Peak in 1984. We have to be a bit more specific here: Audi that Michelle Mouton ran in Pikes Peak was Audi Sport Quattro (shorter wheelbase homologation variant) S1 Pikes Peak. S1 itself was "evolution" variant designed specifically for WRC. S1 Pikes Peak was "unrestricted" variant of Audi Sport Quattro S1. Also worth mentioning: most drivers claim that paved track is harder and more dangerous to drive than previous, gravel road.

Forget the race. On my first visit to the US, In 1973, I was in Denver with a rental Plymouth Fury, which I liked. I took it up Pikes Peak and on the way back, decided to put it through its paces. All was well until the 10-11th turn, when the brakes refused to work. Somehow I skidded round the bend and ground to a halt, with a 2,000 ft. dropoff to my right - I don't remember any Armco barriers in those days. I got out, and smoke was pouring off all 4 wheels. Those were the days when US cars had drum brakes and cardboard liners.

I am a massive Suzuki fan, so I just had to go and watch Monster Tajima’s 2011 run. It’s just incredible, the way he can place the car so perfectly, to the exact millimetre, I guess having over four decades of racing experience, over three decades at Pikes Peak, including six prior wins, will give you that level of perfection. Still, it’s incredible to watch.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Suzuki Escudo Pikes Peak had two versions: one with a pair of turbo four cylinder engines and one with a twin turbo V6... and what was the stock version of the Escudo pikes peak version? A Geo Tracker with the steering wheel on the right. The twin turbo V6 was even based on the 2.5L V6 you could buy the tracker with and I believe the four cylinders were based on the 1.6L inline four you could get in the Tracker.

A nice history of racing on Pikes Peak. A shame you didn't mention the annual January 1 motorcycle snow race up the mountain. The road is not cleared of snow. Temperature was below zero degrees F. It was a mass start of around 400 bikes on this narrow road. Only around 30-40 bikes made it to the top. The others suffered snow blindness, frostbite, exhaustion or mechanical problems. With 10-30 inches of loose snow to push through, it was a grueling race. Visibility was often only a few feet due to blowing snow. There were no guard rails on the road. One often could not see where the steep drop offs were . If you think this is a tough race in the summer, try it in the winter. How do I know ? I raced it twice. Had frostbite, exhaustion and eyes frozen shut at one point. I remember hitting a rock under the snow and coming to a stop in near zero visibility. I saw that if I had gone a couple of feet further I would have fallen off of a cliff. Great adventure! It was discontinued some time in the 1990s due to a spectator fatality.

This is a damn amazing video. I've always been fascinated by Pike's Peak, and it may be the best race in the world aside from Monte Carlo Rally and Dakar. Watching cars go around an oval bores me. The more natural barriers, the more interesting it gets and it has the history to prove it (1916). On the motorcycle course shutting down after Dunne's death in 2019, I was against it. Motorcycle deaths doesn't deter the Isle of Man since 1911 (almost every year) . Deaths are inevitable in racing (heck, even while driving on public roads) and they are grown men who know the risks. My chances of dying are greater just by going to a 7-11 in Chicago at night (thanks Mayor Lightfoot Beetlejuice) than racing a Ducati at Pike's Peak. Bring it back.

Absolute legend! Sad that he's gone. He was a huge part of my childhood as far as racing legends go. Also what a bummer that we won't see him rip up pikes in the porsche hoonigan built, that thing is an monster would have be awesome to see him flying up pikes. Sucks that they made it to the past pikes but ended up not being able to race due to mechanical issues

Thing about going up it you have to go back down. And that is just a challenging. Brakes tend to get very hot and fade. Also most mountain passes here have no guard rails.

Albon, have you ever done a similar story about Australia"s Mount Panorama, "Bathurst". It too started as a dirt track. You might know it from the "Bathurst 1000" race. Terry from Australia.
