This call briefly reminds me of the movie Acrimony (without the crime/drama). Just the plot where the guy pursued his dreams and barely scrapes enough to pay utilities while the wife works two jobs and is struggling.) I would love to hear Dave’s rant about that aspect in the movie.

Exactly. Dave whiffed this call completely. A lot of small business owners take tiny pay, and just live off expensing everything to the busness for the tax write-off. It doesnt necessarily mean he’s not earning money, he’s just hiding it in the business. Maybe that’s not the case, but this poor lady was railroaded in this call.

She didn't realize when they said their vows-love, honor, cherish- they were both promising to him. By her tone, she fully understands this since, and is trying to keep it, them, together. I'm worried about her because this was my life for 30 years. He had his own separate bank accounts and our joint account. And then he left the marriage when he had better options for himself- walked in the door one day and told me to "leave as soon as possible so that I can feel moved on" one month before our 30th anniversary. I was mid-50s suddenly without a home, a job, my kid & friends (I had to move across the country), no savings, retirement, and I had believed (stupidly) that we'd grow old together. I was in $10,000+ in debt because I had been using cc in my name only to pay our expenses for years while he jumped low paying jobs (i think they were? i have no idea actually) constantly. No one knew I was supporting us, that we were in debt, as he spent his time on his "real" life- a band. She does need to reach out to a pastor and Godly friends. asap. Will be praying for them both.

@@mikebetts2046 That depends. If he claims to be working full time, then he isn't picking up the slack at home like a housewife would. Someone who does most or all of the cleaning, cooking, washing clothes, running the errands, etc. can be adding enough value to the family unit that everyone's happy. On the other hand, if the non-earning spouse isn't contributing anything in labor to the household, nuts to that. I had a boyfriend like that once; a complete waste of skin. Worse, he refused to work enough hours at his fast food job to pay for his own fun, and had his hand out to me all the time. And he cheated on me. This woman has been taken for a 27 year long ride.

She has never seen the books for her husband's "business". He is lying about profits so she will keep providing. He is super dominant and withholding. She is dominated and conflict avoidant. What a sad mess. A divorce lawyer could get access to those records but you are likely not going to go down that road.

Sherry Ellesson I have run my own business’s and will tell you after 13 yrs if you have to put that much money back into a business then that business is not viable and he needs to wind it up and get a job. My feeling is he is actually earning a lot more than he tells her and stashing money. If you are in a marriage both partners should be fully aware of each other’s financial affairs and if your not then you don’t have a true marriage.

If he keeps most of the profit within the company, that means he's using the business as an appreciating asset, making as little take home pay as possible to pay less in taxes. Isn't that normal for ALL small business owners? I have a feeling she doesn't know how much her husband actually makes.

He either thinks she's too stupid (or scared) to notice he's getting a free ride, or he's hiding money from her. She's just woken up to the idea of handling finances in a more mature way, but is realizing she's gonna have to poke a sleeping dog with a stick. Could be good for their marriage, but her nervous laughter tells me she's more afraid it will destabilize a lot of things.

Let's be honest....he doesn't "work" he has a hobby that sometimes pulls in a little money. He doesn't want to work. Rachel is right, people really hate the idea of having joint bank accounts SMH. Marriage, healthy marriage is working as a team and sharing everything. If you can't trust your spouse with finances you shouldn't be married.
