Oz's comment about "Mi Casio es Su Casio," is a Joss Whedon joke because Casio manufactured some of the finest sound equipment around during this era.

One of the things I like about this episode is the way their fears were do big yet the demon was tiny, in much the same way that our fears so often loom much larger than the reality.

Xander is just a human guy. He is special in one way - despite being normal, he still willingly faces evil to help his friends. That takes more courage than doing so when you have extraordinary or supernatural powers.

Fear Itself is a quote from FDRs speech in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
@pieceofgosa2 ай бұрын
It was from his inaugural address in 1933 (8 years before Pearl Harbor) & he was paraphrasing Henry Thoreau (a philosopher) who wrote "nothing is much to be feared as fear" in his journal in 1851. The line in Roosevelt's speech was not written by Roosevelt himself, instead it is thought to be the work of Louis McHenry Howe, a journalist & friend of Roosevelt's who re-drafted the speech the night before the inauguration.

Why Oz said "Casio" instead of "Casa" is because they were thanking him for lending them his sound system stuff - which Casio is a brand of stereo. It was intentional, not a mistake.

Anya demonstrates much the same lack of filters that you would encounter with someone who is neurodivergent. She is attempting to comprehend any kind of relationship, though her frame of reference is seriously skewed. As a result, being around the Scoobies (and Xander in particular) is good for her.

Anya, oddly, never treated Xander as badly as Faith did. Anya is demonstrating brutal honesty so far. I wonder if that might become a theme? This was a fun episode, and thanks for reacting. [EDIT: Plus the bunny-phobia is hilarious.]

Aldis Hodge, masked teenager you read about first, has also been a show that you probably know, Supernatural, in season 2. You read that he was in the show Leverage, which coincidentally enough had another Supernatural actor in it, and from Angel, Christian Kane, who played the lawyer at the law firm in episode one, when Angel kicked the vampire client's chair out the window. Btw... the MCU and SPN are adjacent universes to the Whedonverse. So is, David Boreanaz's show BONES, and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Tons of Whedonverse Alumni crossovers in those shows and movies...even if some of them were in prosthetics and costume.

A note from writer David Fury after asking him if Anthony Stewart Head (ASH) using a chainsaw was an Evid Dead reference as ASH in the film uses one. "Hi, John. The chainsaw was very much an “Evil Dead” touchstone as was much of the episode with the Sam Raimi whip-pans and such. The ASH/Ash thing was purely a coincidence that I didn’t recognize til you pointed it out. Cute."

I've always loved Fear, Itself more than Halloween. Both are great episodes, but the polished nature of this episode is amazing. The horror is capturing, but the humour is always on point, too, especially at the end. Also, in case you never realized it, the guy with the weird neck chatting with Buffy in the basement is the same guy that fell down the stairs at 14:13. So, that's why he's like that. Also, disappointed that there isn't an actor blurb for Walter Emmanuel Jones, who has had a decent number of credits to his name, probably most famously as the original Black Ranger in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

Buffy is my favourite show. I find the best way to view and appreciate Anya and her dialog, is as a young child, like 6 or something, who has only been human and alive for a few years. Obviously sometimes Anya says very important things.

I love this episode. I think the editors abd effects were on point. I actually was on set when Buffy punches the kid. Possible subtle nod to The Evil Dead. Giles is played by Tony Head, initials ASH and uses a chainsaw.. Bruce Campbell plays Ash with a chainsaw hand. I did not know that was Aldis Hodge. He starred in Leverage with Christian Kane who is Lindsey on Angel. One of the lawyers. I was parked next to that house a couple weeks ago. It's much bomigger than this or American Horror Story show.

Aldis's brother, Edwin, appeared in an episode of Angel. He's currently on "FBI: Most Wanted". They've been acting since they were kids. One of their notable gigs was playing Sam L. Jackson's nephews in Die Hard With A Vengeance.

@@pieceofgosa Most people's memories become more vague & fragmented as time passes. I was a toddler over 40years ago. Can't say I remember it very well. Or my high school years for that matter... or even my college ones. Not the events, what I thought, or how I felt. How much would someone remember after 1,000 years? The biggest thing for me is that she's not trying to be rude or hurtful. She's just being honest -- zero filter. One can say she lacks empathy, but not putting oneself in Anya's shoes just makes one hypocritical. Taking an understanding & compassionate stance doesn't equal "apologist". One can be these things while still holding people accountable for their actions (including their words). If Anya wasn't doing her best to learn & grow that would be one thing, but she is making it a point to learn from her mistakes. Bearing in mind that growth doesn't happen overnight, not is it linear. Relearning the same lessons is to be expected. It's just part of being human. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

And that is really an important point Anya actually makes herself when she asks Xander out for the prom, that now all of a sudden she is "stuck" in this new form, having a soul, having all kinds of weird feelings she doesnt know (anymore) and she cant handle. And she actually cares for Xander, she showed that by asking him to run away before the mayor would change, or in this episode by without hesitation getting Gile's help.

Some people in the past couple of Buffy/Angel videos have been arguing and insulting each other in comments. I let it go for a while because I believe they were isolated incidents but a few people keep reappearing in the arguments and I won't tolerate it. This is a place to comment about the video, not insult and squabble amongst yourselves and I won't tolerate it any longer. Having a discussion is very easy without arguments. The next time I see an argument that resolved in insulting each other, you will get a warning before you are banned. I appreciate everyone's consideration to remain civil when commenting on other people's comments. I will repeat this message in next week's episode, but I don't want this to happen again.

It's not that its tacky Giles. It's that even small he was doing a good job screwing with the group. No one actually did anything until Buffy stepped on him, and even then it was because she felt less alone with the group around her. The fears weren't put in their heads by the demon. They were fears they all had and therefore issues not resolved. That's the true message the group didn't take away from it.

I ADORE Emma Caulfield, she kills it as Anya & the character IS hilarious but as a person she just completely sucks. She has a body count bigger than Angelus, Spike, Darla & Drusilla combined & she is utterly remorseless about it.

Fear Itself was not one of my favourite episodes. S4 had its problems with direction after the high school years, this episode I thought was a very average episode, most interesting part is the part with Oz's fear. There is much better to come. I thought this was a bit of a rehash of Nightmares from S1 which in fact was a much better episode than this. Some comic relief with the size of the demon, but that's about it. Strangely enough on re-watch of BTVS you always pick up on something new each time the bleeding on the symbol very significant. Again its all very subjective some people like this episode a lot, I much preferred Nightmares from S1 and Halloween from S2.
